  • Dire Straits, please get back together. The world needs music like this again.

  • any time you have Clapton playing rhythm guitar you know its a special moment

  • I could play this over and over! I love it especially Mark Knofler playing the guitar piece at the beginning!

  • thanks for uploading this...too bad on the skips, but it is wonderful nonetheless.

  • This is my favourite version of my favourite song of all time.

  • Down at Southern Star Ampitheater 1988, Houston. One of the greatest concerts I ever went to. They were an amazing band in concert.

  • My God!!!!!!! Brilliant!

  • That sax just breaks my heart as it trails out...what a beautiful song.

  • what can I say about the Maestros? speechless

  • thanx for uploading my friend!! absolutlely moving!!! and yeah, HOW BOUT THAT SAX!!!!! WOW!!! that was fantastic!!!! now this is real music!!! are you paying attention you rap fans out there??? this is real musicianship and talent!!!!! SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!!! PEACE!!!

  • @MrMukda123 that would be a saxophone

  • @MrMukda123 who is the trumpet player?

  • great saxo solo

  • @eanielsen123 well, he didn't say that the killers are better than Knopfler, but he think that their version is better 'cause in hin opinion the killers vocalist's voice is better than Knopfler's voice.

  • To the people who says that the killers' version is better than the original one, please, listen Dire Straits playing it and cry, 'cause is one of the best bands of the history.

  • @mark099able

I couldn't agree with you more Mark! Wonderful!

  • To the people who says that the killers' version is better than the original one, please, listen Dire Straits playing it and cry, 'cause is one of the best bands of the history.

  • @mark099able lol some idiot said the Killers was better then Mark Knopfler? That comment speaks for itself.

  • I taped this back then....it's amazing as i can smell the aftershave i used to use way back then...i was 20 and started in the company im still in today that year...not a care in the world back then...no worries at all...the biggest worry then was which bars to go to on a weekend...or where to go on holiday...it was the 1st time i went to Los Angeles of that year...what great days they were to be not grown up and not worry about kids, money, health, mortage all that stuff that ment very little.

  • one of the best live videos I have ever seen, and I was not even born yet then. The sax is just powerful and everything is great through the video.

  • I was 12 years old when they broadcast this concert live, I remember it was something amazing, the whole concert was like a revelation to me. I recorded some of it on VHS video, and then I put the sound on tape, to play on my walkman - imagine what sound quality :P...But I listened to it over and over again, especially this song, that still gives me the goosebumps! Nice to see it back again, thanks

  • MAGIC

  • Great song, but unfortunately the video lacks of quality. Hopefully somebody truly generous out there on the internet will share a better clip of this remarkable melody. Best whishes to all who support classic rock bands!!!

  • This wasn't 1989, it was '88. I was at this concert, totally amazing

  • great song but the jump is killing it

  • Great performance, poor recording though.

  • Why on earth does the video keep skipping? Totally ruins it.

  • Every time I try to express how I feel about this song, but words fail me. The original studio version is great, but the live versions - Mandela 88, On the Night, a Night in London, Alchemy...all of them - are so unbearably beautiful they steal my breath away. To me, Mark Knopfler is more than awesome. I believe I was born to worship this man...

  • @avidbookreader You can't go too far wrong worshipping Mark...

  • @avidbookreader I know exactly what you mean. I wish youtube had a youtube mix of al the versions of this song (only with Knopfler singing) I would sit and watch it day after day. sigh. This is such a fantastic song. Obviously born out of heartbreak, sadly....but what a masterpiece of writing, singing and playing.

  • @avidbookreader is that clapton?

  • @lonepilgrim007 Sure is. Does the entire concert with his best buddy MK!

  • not heard in a long time but what a track the sax is brilliant love it

  • WOW!!! seems like yesterday that I was there! the sax solo is just amazing.....goose bumps... thank you thank you!!!!

  • tjr tjr tjr........

  • Hi Mark Knopfler it's a little jumpy at times but I wont be deleating it from my IPod. . Great Stuff

  • Why aren't there any songs with lyrics like these anymore. You have Rhianna and Katy Perry with such sexual songs, why can't we get away from such distortion of good music.

  • Mark's steel guitar is the one on the cover of Brothers in Arms.

  • parfait "l'absolu"

  • Rock forever...

Great Group, Great Man, Great Music, Great Story!

  • Mark are using the guitar of ROBOCOOP

  • Mark Ice Cold guitar player no expresion on his face

    But a true golden HEART

  • Similar but not the same thats what all guitarists are about stop chatting shit and enjoy these talented musicians including the sax player !

  • the constant skipping of the video made it difficult to enjoy the video. Why even post it?

  • immortal

  • You CANNOT be serious....Maybe then you can show me some Clapton links were he does the vibrato with his fretting fingers like Mark does

  • EC is OK at what he does....But he can't do what Mark can on a guitar.

  • @lwplwp Don't be ridiculous. Of course he can.

  • Is it just me or did the sound on this skip several times? My favorite MK song of all! Thanks for posting this!!

  • Eric Clapton only played because the guitarist's wife was in hospital having twins! I remember that clearly as do I remember every note the saxophonist played. Today is the first time I've heard it since the original concert. Uploader, Sir..I salute you!

  • youtube should disable dislike button from this song....

  • You shouldn't come around here singin' up at people like that..........Awesome line. =)

  • Sir, if you ever see this comment,

I lived in poverty, yet lived enough to get to your cell, stood there

looked at your playing ground; admired your resolve and crucially of others....

saw where you planted stuff .. isn't it marvellous?

  • Mozart on earth recognising a greater man ...long live Nelson mandiba

  • @EastLondonbloke90 MANDELA

  • What's with all the "skips"....?????

  • The most remarkable things about the Dire Straits' performance of Romeo and Juliet are that incredible sax and the luxurious way that Mark Knopfler takes all these sounds in and then sings the words in a knock-off kinda way. It never ceases to amaze me....

  • Just WAUW

  • great real handmade music. the golden times of big concert bands like genesis, pf and so on......

  • That overused word, awesome, is truly correct for this performance. Whoah...p.h.e.n.o.m.e.n.a.l...AWESOME! So satisfying. Best memories ever.

  • DAT INTRO

  • this is beautiful. i would have loved to have been there

  • Something very beautiful about this

  • the saxophone guy looks like he's having the time of his life :D

  • It skipped a few times. Strange. Did you play this on a record player???

  • R&M

    Amo muito!!!!!

  • BEST SONG, BEST CONCERT, BEST GROUP.

  • True musical genius! The 80's was the best decade of rock ever and this guy poineered the way!

  • i would like to know who can dislike this!it's very music, very sound... Idiots

  • lots of memories

  • Best geordie ever, even better then the hairy bikers, tnx Bastabillia.

  • i have no words...omg amazing :P

  • A truly phenomenal performance, and overall one of the most amazing songs ever written.

  • Marks so good Clapton plays rythem! Kudos to chris white, such amazing sax playing. Notice the switch from alto to tenor sax much as mark goes from resonator to electric. Fucking awesome what more needs to be said

  • Thanks for posting! Had this on VHS years ago, one of the best songs of DS/Mark Knopfler!

  • I really enjoy Dire Straits music, thank you for adding the video.

  • Every so often a live performance just blows you away. This is one. Sax solo by Chris White is just the best ever in rock. Congrats also to BBC Director who captured this so perfectly. Amazing close-ups and mixing of images. Also think this was one of the first times they used a remote camera-on-crane so extensively, which gave those stunning sweeping left to right and overhead shots used on the sax solo. Bread and butter shots on X-Factor but back then, very very special.

  • may I ask you for a copy of the cd please?

  • best song in the world.

  • the song is awesome, and dire straits rule.

But the quality wasnt that good

  • I love this song long ago, a very beautiful thing!

  • Excellent!!!5*****!!!

  • "I can't do everything, but I'll do anything for you. ..."

  • Fantastic! 5*****!!!!!

  • you n me babe ? did he break a guitar string is that why he was having a giggle ?anyone else get that ...at 7 :36 .

    i love Dire Straits

  • no no he didn't break that string

  • man that saxophone in the beginnin is nice

  • I was there that day, and the Straits were fantastic. Great day.

  • excelent!

  • Hello, has anyone got the whole Dire Straits & Eric Clapton performance on CD, if so can I purchase a copy, my video copy died a few weeks ago. Thank u

  • That concert had to be unforgetable, I have listened some songs : Sultans Of Swing, Wonderful tonight, Romeo & Juliet.. really good

  • me 2 best song ever best sax ever

  • i love the version (on the night) with the sax....and also live at the alchemy, amazing!!!!

  • well said vincecochlin, i agree that the sax is so beautiful in this song and those that sed eric should have played the solo clearly have no understanding of great music:)......one of the most beautiful meaningful songs ever written!

  • Whoever said that 'Eric clapton should of played this solo'.. is a dick!!...Whoever said the sax should'nt be in this as well crafted song is also a dickhead with no understanding of music...for those who know...RESPECT!!...Pure talent....loveit!!

  • @vincecochlin Man, I'm sorry to disagree but just watch the acoustic version of the video... all the bullshit saxophone here indicates is too much cocaine... ditto with the presence of clapton. it's totally tripe and useless to be there, unless you're a guy that likes kenny g esque brass parts i guess

  • @blake1kaleb The saxophone is Romeo singing the streets a serenade!

  • @vincecochlin The sax is one of the most beautiful instruments and it is the very essence of this song.

  • the sax does not "wreck it" its a fantastic solo. i love it all, reminds me of my teenage years

  • Man you have to be joking.

This is one of the finest live performances EVER and the sax is just incredible.Chris White on sax was incredible.I know cause I'm proud to say I was there.Magnificent.

  • youre so right, the whole performance is just brilliant and you are so lucky to have been there

  • Mate I know.I've been to hundreds of gigs literally and this single performance was without doubt the best I've ever seen. Was a privilege to see it.

... and I'm not a big DS fan but hey this was absolutely wonderful.Truly.

  • Timeless classic

  • remember watchin this concert live when i was only 11 with me mom n dad (think it was friday night, and yeah it was '88), remember em saying to me "watch this band dire straits son they're a proper band" and me thinking yeah f*ckin right, whatever (as you do as a kid). they fuckin blew me away...this, sultans, and every song was amazing!!!...the saxaphonist was unbelievable...... i was hooked on dire straits from that day on....

  • Thank you F00dTube (19 hours ago)

I meant religion and then the comment had a life of it's own, including poor grammar. Your help was appreciated :)

  • Hahaha...As I was reading your last post, I am thinking you must have meant religion. Good one.

  • lol.

very stange,i was the complete opposite.was 15 when this happened.

got into dire straits and guitar music in general, after the live aid concert and the same as you,was sat with my mom and dad and said to them, you have to listen to this band...they never got it.

    ah well,there loss.

  • If Music were a region, this would be it's theme song.

  • great songs! Great feeling!Gerat words!

  • I was at this concert, standing right at front centre stage. I don't mind admitting I was in floods of tears watching this amazing man performing this. I was 18 years old and went with my Dad. He went to free Mandela, I went to see Dire Straits :) So to have EC perform with them was amazing. Eric was a last minute replacement as Jack's wife had just had twins and he couldn't make it. What a substitution though. Awesome concert.

  • I wanted to die under some woman's window even though she had a nice husband and nice kids some years ago. Weird world.

  • this is the best sax solo
