  • did he invent the distortion sound on the guitar?

  • Great song ~ Arthur

  • I grew up with Marty and I really loved his voice his songs are timeless. I sang this song at Ozark fair grounds last year and even the younger crowd liked it.

  • One of the best song ever written, period.

  • He was a Tenor-Baritone, which is very rare.

  • First recorded fuzz tone as well.

    Take that rockers!

  • Love Marty Robbins, it is rare to hear such a magnificant voice, just all around beauty when he sings.

  • i herd that a guitar string broke while recording this song that gave that sound, quote me if i am wrong god bless you marty u have inspired me

  • @dmaloney75 It was a vacum tube in an amp that failed before the break, when the guitar picker raked down on the break he pauses in his suprise, the rest of the pickers were all motioning silently for the guy to continue. Turned out that tube was the hottest thing in Nashville that year.

  • J'aime beaucoup la chanson, la voix, l'émotion qu'elle dégage.

    Laura

  • One of the great Baritone voices that made country music great.

  • @franklindavid

Pretty sure he wasn't a barry. Tenor is more like it.

  • His early death was a real tragedy for American music.

  • One of the truly great voices of any genre of music.

  • Beautiful, expressive voice. He would sort of lean into thoes high notes the ladies would swoon. This is probably the first fuzz guitar ever.

  • There will never be anyone who can top him!!!! His voice is priceless!! He is an American icon.

  • @gdl0748 absolutely right you are.

  • i got to play with marty's steel player that played when this song came out and he told that marty was a really super nice guy..not a bad sound for a busted speaker

  • this is one of my favorite songs by marty, everything he sings is great

  • did you know the distortion of a failed amp in this recording introduced the effect to country music.

  • Just shows you that nothing is sure in this life! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

  • what an amazing talent

  • one of the best singers ever

  • one of most fantastic voices ever... I cried when he died, only seen him in person once, he didn't need a mike, gave me goose bumps 20 feet from the mike. What a voice, his son ronny can sing those songs too

  • wow! what a song

  • My Dad's first cousin, making him my first cousin once removed, had a demo record of himself singing this. My brother and I would always try to make him sing it at family reunions to the delight of his wife. She like us loved this song.

  • Marty Robbins was a Brit.

  • Yea! Thanks. R.I.P. Marty.. My husband sings the hell out of this song, and Marty was my Dad's Fav!!!!!

  • Thank you for posting your collection. I'm the lead player for our band and we specialize in the older country/western, and gospel music. Your uploads have helped me tremendously to learn some of the songs I wasn't too familiar with.

Marty Robbins was (is) one of my very favorite singers and song writers!

  • You have just listened to the Greatest Country, God given voice in music. Marty was, and will always will be The very "Best Of the Best". There has been many great singers, but there will never be another Marty Robbins, nor will there ever be another Patsy Cline. Two of the very Best.

  • This man had a true voice quality. Who would you say could compare this talent,

    anyone..........

  • Thank you for posting all the wonderful songs. They remind me of my child hood.

  • I seen Marty sing when I was 15 . I got into a nightclub and called Bostonia ball room in San Diego. I will be one of the biggest thrills of my life. Never will regret it.

  • We miss you Marty

  • Something about this song just touches me.

  • Thanks for posting the master's music. This is my all time favorite. His vocal range, clarity, and musical talent justify all the kind words written and spoken about him. It's a Sin" also highlights these characteristics. Ralph Emery called him "Golden Throat" because he was just that. It was sad when he passed away but we have these great

tunes in this format to enjoy. Thanks !!

  • Thanks for reminding me, kindawierd1. Of course you're right. But when you get to be my age, time is irrelevant. However, I should be more careful about posting memories for the world to see. Otherwise, people might question the core of my statements! (Smile with me, please.............)

  • Loved Marty !!! He was one of my most favorite country singers !!! Marty Robbins, George Jones,Merle Haggard and Conway Twitty are all # 1 in my book !!! They can't be beat !!!

  • I'm three now! I'm going sending too! Father tree years.........

  • 這是我大學生時代(30多年前)最喜歡的英語老歌之一!

    這首歌目前我還能背唱!只是在台灣唱卡拉ok時!沒有這首歌的 卡拉!

  • In addition to being a great musician Marty raced NASCAR as a hobby in th 70's. If I have my facts correct he was also the promoter at the Nashville Speedway.

  • i know my video does not have anything to do with country music but i am on this channel because tulsa is as countrey as it gets and the doctors there are the people i am talking so please for yopur own sake or the sake of a loved one please watch [msbones1950] a slow death or a waiting grave

  • I love Marty Robbins, he was such a great asset to country music!

  • And he was such a great performer, live, on-stage.....such energy! We saw him in New Orleans at an outdoor exhibition in the late 80's. And he explained the "fuzz" sound then. Yep, an amp tube that blew............

  • @lovingtheoldtunes You couldn't of seen him in the "late 80's" in New Orleans as you stated, because Marty died on Dec 9, 1982 from complications following cardiac surgery. RIP

I saw him in concert in '81, and your right about the amp blowing during the recording session. He said that after hearing it, he liked the effect and decided to keep it on the recording. He would then try and imitate the sound in every concert there after. He was a great man! and He is Missed!!

  • There are two words in the history of music (country or pop) that deserves recognition........Marty Robins!!!!!!

  • great song and singing

  • I truly love this song. What a singer and songwriter.

  • beautiful memories , i don't like getting old .

  • The greatest of the great is Marty no one to this day can touch this man showman shipp singing writeting music etc.

  • Yup, overdrove an amplifier tube, and the distortion resulted. You can actually hear it early in the song with the "ticking" noise in the background. All of the tracks were recorded separately and they could have taken it out, but they liked it so much they left it in. Couldn't do that with transistors.

  • Like a 57 Chev - this man is a fab cruiser. Graham Melb Aus

  • i played with marty's steel player years ago in texas and he told me this fuzz sound was made by a busted speaker in an amp ..when they played it back they liked it and so all these guitar pedals were born from that

  • played with marty's steel player a few years back and he said marty was a really nice guy

  • From what I heard the FUZZ Tones on this recording wasn't planned. This was a technical malfunction that occured so they decided to keep it in the recording. Probably the first recording ever to have them. But it did make the song a hit..

  • Marty's pipes are beyond words.

  • Marty lives on with his wonderful renditions. No other singer could capture these songs like Marty..Thanks Marty for sharing your unique talent

  • LOVE the song ,his voice, beautiful ... ...thanks for posting !!!

    LUMI

  • Great song but has more than a passing similarity to Hank Williams' "You win again"

  • I love this tune an I'm a bluesman

  • Beautiful song.....and voice...!!!

  • What a singer he was .. He and Jim Reeves had a voice that never has been duplicated, I am so glad I found this site ...

  • Great song, Great singer, i love Marty's voice; I first heard this song whilst Marty was fooling around with Merle Haggard on an American chat show. Searched for a full version and found it on Tarquin45 channel, showed it to my mum and it became one of her favourites. I have taken the liberty of uploading my own version - I hope it doesn't offend. Regards

    Ian

  • @ncompasscom I had to remove my cover version due to "Third Party Copyright Infringement". :-/ How do I upload videos without invoking the wrath of Youtube? Regards Ian formerly Ncompasscom

  • if i am right ,not sure but i think they were practicing and blew a speaker, marty liked the sound , so he recorded the song just like you hear it pure genious. in my opinion

  • Great song. Great Man.

  • doug is right. It was the bass. The sound did not come from a guitar, But I don't think they blew a speaker. It was just an accidental distortion. Glad they learned how to duplicate it.

  • A Top 5 hit for the late Marty Robbins in February 1961. It also hit #1 on the Country & Western Charts. It was pretty obvious that Marty was a force on the charts. Could he be the breakout star of this new decade? And there was something special about that fuzz sound.

  • @mkl62 It was Marty, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline that set the stage for the "new age". They were the artists that brought "country" into homes and to people that didn't

really like country or had never heard it. They set the stage, but in a way something

was lost in this new kind of "country". The music we here now would have been considered "Pop" back then. Not really country to my way of thinking.

  • @LadODell I know what you mean. My uncle played the guitar and mandolin in various country cover bands until health issues made him give it up. He doesn't like this new country either. What really got him peeved was when Kenny Loggins appeared on the old Nashville Network and performed his hits.

  • In 1960, a Nashville session musician, Grady Martin, accidentally stumbled upon the fuzz sound during a recording session for Marty Robbins' "Don't Worry 'Bout Me", due to a faulty guitar amplifier. The fault soon reproduced by an electronic circuit, which was first marketed as the Model FZ-1 under the "Fuzz Tone" brand name.

  • Loved him Loved him Loved him. I'm one off his greatest Fans.

  • Ronald Reagan loved him- Marty actually perfromed at the White House in the summer of '81 before his untimely passing.

  • @billchew450

So did President Eisenhower apparently and he loved Marty's 'El Paso.'

  • Between Marty and Jim Reeves it is hard to pick the better voice. They were the best of their time and now as well.

  • @djdenton1969 Oh no! They were both greatm nothing to choose don't even try

  • Great song by a great singer. Wasn't it a bad tube in the amp?

  • It is great song to my heart.

    Stimulate my feeling.

  • Great Song Of Marty..

    Wonderful..

  • Nothing short of awsome ,Marty, thank you .

  • Great song, thanks for sharing a classic.

  • really it was the amp that messed up.

  • @drumaster24 I heard marty in an interview and he said the same thing you said and it wasn't noticeable till the final cut and was liked so it was left in. Great song, about drove the D.Js at AFRS affiliate WVNN (Wild voice of Northern Newfoundland ) where i worked while in the U.S A.F.nuts for awhile trying to identify the sounds.

  • the fuzz bass on this song is awesome!!!!

  • i think that the fuzzbox spoils this song a bit.

  • @twotwozap It's not a fuzzbox. It's a broken mixing channel.

  • @twotwozap I dont think so at all.

  • Thank you for posting this classic! It was my Mama's favorite song and "fuzz" or not, she loved Marty Robbins above all the singers of that time. He had a voice no one can imitate nor has come close to. Marty Robbins was and is the heart of country music.

  • Herb's comment about using a razor blade is certainly feasible.

My brother and I saw Marty in 1960.

What I heard was they blew the speaker in the bass amp, liked the sound so left it.

The rest, as they say, is/was history.

  • When I was performing on stage, I had this song in my set. Why? Because it is a masterpiece of country music. It was a challenge to perform. Hit the notes and the crowd would respond. Thank the Almighty I hit the notes. Kids, Practice

  • BEAUTIFUL GOD GIVEN VOICE OF MARTY ROBBINS,GLAD WE CAN STILL HEAR THIS,THANKS FOR POSTING.

  • love this song it still sond as good as it did back in the day

  • Any doubt that it was P.Burlison's fuzz tone octaves on the Rock n Roll trio's hits after listening to these fuzz tone licks...

  • Thanks for this, this song is very dear to me.

  • Marty Robbins, the greatest country singer of all time!

  • 1st Country song with a "Fuzz" effect on the guitar. I heard they took a razor blade and sliced the speaker to make this recored effect/

..back before The FUZZ pedal was out!

  • @HerbWalker Actually according to the producer and those involved in the recording, the fuzz was not heard live during the actual recording but only heard on playback./ Once it was discovered they decided to leave it that way and the rest is history.

  • one of my faves, tho i liked the cowboys also.

  • This is my favorite of Marty's songs. Told my wife, should I pass on before her,

I would like this song played at my funeral service.

  • This is a classic if ever there was one. What a great voice Marty Robbins has, I was proud to meet him many years ago, Thanks for this one

  • for all marty fans a mustget is

    marty robbins greatest hits anthology.

a quantum leap dvd no qldvd6774

  • correction, it was actually a blown tube in the amp. the sound then came through distorted, giving it the fuzz sound. from then on, when they performed this song live, they had to put a blown tube of the right size into the amp they used. To make it easier, someone eventually invented the distorion pedal

  • at about 1:30 you will hear probably the first known recording of the fuzz guitar sound.. one of Marty's guitarist had a faulty connection thus producing this fuzzy sound and was left in the recording....

  • From A White Sport Coat through Devil Woman Marty was in a class by himself. Thanks for the great sounds and RIP Marty

  • I seen him in person and he was great! Got his signature . Very talented and funny man.

  • I dont think i missed playing this tune but a few time in forty years of playing music in bands of all types.......

  • What an absolute pleasure it is to open a bottle of red and call up pure class thanks to Tarqin45 and like minded people. As a 60+ year old I can only envy you young people your youth, because in ten years time (You Tube) will be just about hanging on as technology advances to Holograms in your sitting rooms and the enviable ability of record labels to clean all archives to H.D What a prospect?

  • hey bicarefuly you make me cray so easy

is bicause i love this song and i have long long time witauth now anyting aboth till now thank you KHARMAGON

  • so was grady martin playin bass on this one?

  • I grew up listening to this music, oh how I wish I had that voice.

    RIP old friend.

  • great singer him and his wife were wonderful people sorry for her and all country music persons

  • Love this song and Marty. RIP Marty!!

  • I love this song. My parents listened to Marty Robbins - what a beautiful voice!

    Excellent.

  • Doesn't any one listen to the words any more?? Beautiful song....

  • yes i do and that is what impacts this tune .freakig beautiful!

  • I think Marty was somewhat irked himself that such a great song's main point of talk was the fuzz guitar accompaniment. It did add a certain uniqueness, but the performance and song song were ultra powerful anyway. Grady Martin issued a 45 around this time called 'The Fuzz' and it sold zilch.

  • wrong my friend. Marty wasn t irked about anything. The song and the performance was the all. Before he performed this song on the Opry, he was out at the track racing. So go figure. To each his own. Marty is a ledgend as he should be. Let it go at that.

  • Personally I'd be happy with the 'fuzz' gone. Such a great song on its own, and the effect takes away a little from it, I think.

  • and i think that even if i am form polan i love songs of this man and notchning can change that.peace

  • Amazing all the BS about the sound of thd bass guitar... Mr Tear Dorp, the smoothest voice country will ever hear!

  • Brought tears to my eyes. I've been trying to find this song for ages. The "distortion booster" effect was, apparently, a bad-connection mistake which turned into a good feature, thanks to a discerning recording engineer who kept in in the mix. Also, reputedly this was the lowest bass note ever hit in analog recording history! It is GREAT! Thanks so much!

  • Actually, Bob Kingsly of 'billboard ' top music several years ago said that it was a weak tube in the amplifyer that caused the flat sound, and the producers liked it and kept it in. That is what led to the sound modulators that became a part of the musical sound effects.

  • Would you believe that this is the first song to feature a distrotion booster?

    It is

    Corkey

  • I remember reading about that in a chart music book back in 1992. It has more of a quirky presence on this song than when it was later adopted by garage, psych and R&B musicians later in the decade.

  • Lord, ain't it great to hear music without a bunch of idiots spitting into mics and spewing out obscenities? And,you notice I said MUSIC.

  • My sentiments exactly, mistercoors, the garbage coming over the airways these days from those foulmouthed, drugged -up retards is disgusting. Marty was pure talent & his music will never fade away, we wont let that happen, cos its just too good. RIP Marty Love ya !!!!!

  • my mom seen marty at the dream bowl in california when i was just a little tike in the 50's.

  • He put OUR little town on the MAP! El Paso What a voice.....................

I was told they CUT the speaker paper in the guitar amp to make that guitar effect.

  • I have loved this song ever since I can remember--Marty and the music are awesome, then after getting a a divorce it really expressed my feelings

  • Don't Worry is an awesome song. The trick with the amp made this song unique, but with that little trick or not, the voice is the reason this song is so great. None better than Marty.

  • The tube in the amp actually blew out and that was what caused the lil trick in the song

  • Marty wrote the song "White Sport Coat" after passing a high school where the guys were going into PROM. He was on his way to perform at another place in town, and got the idea for the song.

  • 1:30-I LOVE THAT SOUND!!!!!!!!!

  • what a master

  • this is my frist cuz

  • One of his greatist songs Thanks marty!!!!

  • This is his best...

  • FINE !!! - Erkele

  • sounds like Brent

  • I have a CD with this song on it. It's great! I love Marty's music, so did my dad.

  • well how good is this ---Damir

  • agree with you man

  • oh ya and what about hank snow and hank williams and the women.one is patsy cline

  • Great - used to be called Western music - he was from AZ you know.

Always wondered how that bass was fabricated. Interesting

  • On the original recording Grady Martin blew a capacitor in his amp and it distorted the sound. a 50 cent part changed music history. That was the first recording ever with distortion on it. Now there is a whole industry around sound bending in music of all genre's. Marty was always one to pick up on, and use trend setting sounds in his music. Though it never caught on in country distortion has gone wild in other music like Heavy Metal.

  • you are so right about this one point. But the other is up to debate

  • You can't beat the old country music...Sing it Marty!!!!!!!

  • It is a very "frightening saxaphone" indeed LOL

  • 1011

You got the story almost correct.

ya'll know the recording of this song is how distortion was discovered, as the legend says; a tube burned out in the bass player's amp so they sent someone to go get a new one. but while they were waiting they decided that they could use this new tone for a revolutionary solo.

when an amp that runs two tubes in a class ab1 amplifier, if one tube quits working only half of the waveform is amplified, causing extreme distortion.

  • accidental genius. doesnt matter why. it still sounds great. who thougt of a guitar through a leslie speaker 1st? jewel Aikens?

  • When this record was reviewed in the English musical press the buffoon writing the review mentioned the 'frightening saxophone instrumental break.' What a twit. No doubt though that the never before heard sound added to what was one of Marty's best ballads and greatest vocal performances.

  • In the "for what it is worth department", many years ago I heard a radio interview with Marty and the question was asked what did they do to get that bass whiny twang sound. Marty said that during the recording, a piece of equipment malfunctioned, but they did not know that until they listened to the play back. There was discussion about doing another take, but the decision was made to release the song with that sound. And now you know.

  • its too bad most of today's country is basically chicken fried pop music. at least we can listen to marty on youtube

  • marty was great--but the greatest country singers come down to 2 view points--the shortest period of time was hank williams--the longest period of time merle haggard

  • Wish I could get that fuzzy guitar as a ring tone.

  • Marty Robbins voice was a true vocal masterpiece ! This magnificent vocal
