What you can't understand French w/ an Italian accent???--lol Pava, by his own admission, was not good with other languages; however, just listen and enjoy the magnificence of the voice!
Im lovin' the dramatic placing of the reading glasses---priceless!
Pavarotti was not good at languages, he always had problems with foreign languages. Fortunately for him he was born in Italy, so he could sing in his native language almost always.
I'm a super fan of Pavarotti but I must admit that, although frequenting this role during 20 years, he stayed unable to pronounce correctly a straight word in french, in opposition to his famous collegues as Kraus, Domingo or, earlier, Gedda, Björling...
LOL LP says DAWNS instead of dans with the the unpronounced "s"... LOL so funny I just picture my highschool French class where the kids read the passage as "dawns", very very funny.
A huge shame. The same vocal cords that produced this duet and his two arias so beautifully 20 years before this performance produce this, which pales in comparison.
Very good. About opera singers and foreign lagnuages... mostly they don't speak the language they are singing in, most of them don't speak italian, but, when they study for a role, they have people who explain them every word of text and they learn it by heart. :)
Yes thats right, but you mean pavarotti because I know many tenors, domingo, kraus, caballé etc who actually speak very good french, Languages is not luciano´s best skills but wow sung very well.
So in essence, you're trying to say that his roles such as Don Jose in Carmen and similar others were basically done by lip-synching or something to that effect? Then why were they so successful?
So basically, his Don Jose (Carmen), Werther, and Faust were all sung because of memorising lines?? Even onstage(check out the DG Carmen at the Met with Pavarotti and Baltsa)? You've got to be kidding, no-one can sing so many roles with practically no understanding of what's going on...
But that's what I'm saying, he still had a good idea of what was going on, he knew what his lines meant, even if he didn't speak French itself. As an example, I've memorized lines to songs in Latin before, and I knew what those words meant and what the song was conveying, but I don't actually speak Latin.
As a matter of fact, Pavarotti did not speak French at all. He just never got around to learning it, which he regretted as he had many fans in France. But because of this, he had to learn the libretto phonetically, so it's possible he only had a general idea of what he was saying, rather than what each word and phrase meant.
So... pardon my curiosity, but if that's the case, then are you trying to tell me that his French opera roles (such as Don Jose in Bizett's Carmen, and the title roles of Gounod's Faust and Massenet's Werther, for example), are all phonetically learned as well?
Florez is technically flawless, but my test of any singer is if I get goose bumps. I always did with Pav. in this role. Saw Anderson at the MET in this, but that was when Pav realized he couldn't sing the 9 high c's and cancelled. Just heard Florez, and while technically perfect he just didn't do it for me. Pav will always be my favorite in this role.
Pavarotti excellent as usual! French was not his primary language besides, those who wanted him to be perfect are not perfect themselves. PAVAROTTI THE BEST TENOR EVER!!!!
Not that you understand me wrong, I really find their singing great; but what I find strange is, that Pavarotti after having sung this role sooo often, doesn't know the text by heart; and at 3.14 he looks as if he sees the text for the first time in his life!
Thanks so much; I regret so much that there is no film of he and Sutherland singing this. Anderson is wondeful. I saw them sing this opera at the Met.

jose2carreras 3 years ago
Not lip-synching so much as memorizing lines. The reasons he was so successful:
1) He had an incredible voice; no one had ever sang this particular role entirely in its original key.
2) He was not quite as bad an actor as most people like to think or say, especially in comic roles.

That is my understanding, from biographies I've read. But that's of little detriment, in my opinion. He still sang such roles second to none.
