@Golfy5746 Instead of going thru the keyhole and then left towards the trough you'd go left before the keyhole, climb to the ridge, and follow the east side of the ridge to the summit.
I've climbed Longs Peak four times and each time was just amazing.
I climbed it back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, long before digital photography was invented, so I don't have nearly as many good still photos as I would like and I never, ever shot a video.
THANKS FOR POSTING!!! You've brought back a flood of wonderful memories for me.
i climbed longs in june of 06 in shorts, underarmor and a sweatshirt it went from 85degrees in Estes park record high to 50 degrees at keyhole we had to stop due to snow and ice
When exactly in June did you go, and where exactly did you turn back? How much more equipment would you have needed to continue? I'm going to RMNP in late June and am wondering...
whats the rope for going up if hes not placing pro? All hes gonna do is pull off his 'belayer' if he falls... Good route tho, looks a little more interesting than the standard route I did.
@CarlGauss Most experienced rock climbers can use 5.5 as a descent route but a weaker rock climber or mountaineer might find it far more challenging. Hence the leader might choose to skip pro and but the weaker climber has a rope. Skipping pro lets you move faster and minimize rope drag. Typically alpine is done with a minimal rack so you can save gear for the anchor. You don't want to slip but if placing pro means you're more likely to fall then don't place it. It's a trad thing.
Hey, I wore blue jeans to the top of Longs :-) Of course, I ripped the seat out of them sliding down Home Stretch... good thing I thought to put on shorts underneath! (and no, it didn't rain. in fact, it was oddly hot & buggy on top)
hum. looks fun. might need to try it!
