  • I remember 4 years ago, when Youtube's front page just had featured videos. THis was on there. It was good then. Youtube was good then. Now Youtube sucks. But this song is still good. :]

  • Brett is the man! A REAL musical genius of my generation.

  • he sounds like he caught a cold :(

  • i love how he gets so into it

  • Amazing...as always. Brett Dennen has got to be the best, truly undiscovered talent alive. This man should be selling out the biggest venues in the country.

  • Thanks for posting. fab show, I just wtched it online at lastnightstvshows (.) com

  • it took me a while to listen to all the word, but listen to them closely...this song isnt about a "girl" its about something, a god a belief a higher being...

  • listen to the version of this song, shot live at youtube....its so much better'n this

  • @BaronIzazel your just mad u can't do this and make money

  • @BaronIzazel You're ugly.

    Oh.

    What now?

  • I am so happy he made it to WNKU. I hope he makes it back again.

  • Good god, someone please play for me like this one day... his girlfriend is soooo lucky.

  • 6'5" ? Wow! Amazing talent! "Bring it!" he says, hahahaha! Love it.

  • He sounds like himself, with no compromise, this young man is the truth !

    More Love

  • He sounds like a young Steve Forbert. I like it!

  • I love him

    I'm male,

    I'm hetero,

    I'm taken.

  • He's amazing, love him!

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • LOVE him

  • this guys is awesome !

  • i wish people would give such great tunes less cliqued titles. She's mine, the girl is mine, always and forever e.t.c ,so many great lyrics in this tune and the dullest one ends up being the title. i think little things like that can cause a big talent to slip undert the radar

  • whatever man, the name obviously didn't stop you from thinking it was a good song.

  • Considering this guy has over 10 million hits, and thousands of imatators.

    Hack or phenom.

    The people have spoken;

  • mraz is a big fan! so am i...

please play some gigs in germany.

  • The guilty undertaker sighs,

    The lonesome organ grinder cries,

The silver saxophones say I should refuse you.

The cracked bells and washed-out horns

Blow into my face with scorn,

    But it's not that way,

I wasn't born to lose you.

I want you, I want you,

    I want you so bad,

    Honey, I want you.

  • You must not have any musical taste...

  • Hearing both songs for the first time in the last ten minutes, I can say easily that this sounds nothing like the Dylan song.

If he's ripping anyone off, he's ripping off Gregory Hoskin's voice.

  • he's being him if can't understand that musicians get influences from different places then not only is it fucking annoying for fans of the artist but also it's damn stupid. Gah. peace xx

  • WHAT A RIP OFF!!!! LOL, I would have like him to say at the end: "Long live Dylan" or smthg

  • very much agree it does sound like bob dylans " I WANT YOU"

  • i don't hear it, only the rhythm

  • truffle shuffle!

  • i had no idea how young he was, very mature ideas!

  • Listen to "I Want You" by Bob Dylan, and then tell me Brett didn't just rip off the chords and melody!

YES, there is truth to that "Dylan ripped stuff off too" rap, but this is MUCH MORE BLATANT. I do believe there is basis for a copyright-infringement suit here, but Bob has too much class (& money) to need to do that.

As a songwriter myself, I have paid "homage" to favorite writers or their material, but usually bringing something truly original to the table, not with such blithe phony naivete.

  • Some similarities, maybe, but not copyright infringement. You can't tell me you have never used anything from another song to influence you. So stop making accusations at musicians that are more talented than you.

  • If you had actually read my comment, you'd see that I admitted to using other's songs... but bringing originality in. Also, who says he's more talented?

  • i like it!

  • he's real.

  • brett dennen is real badass.

    his lyrics are beautiful.

  • love not hate

  • I love lesbians

  • so does ur mom

  • Chill guys, just enjoy.

  • Stop comparing him to John Lennon, Jesus, Dylan, Lenny Cohen, Capt Kirk! He's different: He's a lot taller, has ginger hair and no-way as old as Jesus, who also had a beard.

The question is; Does the sound you're hearing feel good and do the words make you think? Can you drift off for a few minutes with your imagination?

The answer for me is definitely yes! This young man is gifted and I hope he continues to write such fantastic songs!

Nice one Brett! (just send the 5 dollars direct to me)

  • He's the next john lennon.

  • he has one good song i could think off. the rest are pretty much the same tune

  • i think the purpose to his music is more about the words that he's singing and not the musical "genius" behind it. his use of patterns in his melodies are what makes his songs... yeah, his guitar tracks usually sound similar though... nonetheless: his lyrical content is suppose to be the main portion of his music...

  • Fell for him first in Indianapolis. Haven't looked at life the same since that John Mayer concert. If people want to help the world, they can. he speaks that and we should listen.

  • Give credit where it's due, he's an awesome writer.

  • saw him in concert in LA, started off good, but all the songs were similar. strange guy but good voice

  • he is a genius..He always speaks the truth..We need people like him in power... He knows what our future should look...He is a true american..He thinks for himself and learns and now teaches...THANKS

  • ok and what makes him a true american?

  • he is a genius..He always speaks the truth..We need people like him in power... He knows what our future should look...He is a true american..He thinks for himself and learns and now teaches...THANKS

  • who's to say what our future Should look like? Also, there's no such thing as a true american, because all americans differ.. and, for all you know, this guy could be out just to make money by presenting "the truth." People have exploited virtue and morals for thousands of years, so don't be so sure of yourself man. Other than that, I do like his singing, but don't go off making this guy look like some jesus/john lennon guy..

  • Brett sings with more carisma than every single boyband ever put together.

  • Giddie-up Brett and rock on!

  • Brett Dennen for President!

  • Breathtaking but no surprise. You are compassion loving kindness.

  • This kid is amazing!

  • tiz a great song to chill out to.

  • I was not expecting him to sing like that. Awesome, this teaches u cant judge ppl on appearances

  • theres a song that ive been looking for that may or may not be by brett dennen... the lyrics, im not sure if theyre right as ive only heard the song a couple times, are something like "this love has got me by the bones, and it will not let me go, i want only to be with you"... something like that... if anyone knows what song this is itd be cool if you could help me out....

  • kind of an odd fellow.

  • I live u Brett.. BIg up

  • Damn he's good..........

  • lol i thought he was black too

  • There is not a Brett song I don't LOVE! BRILLIANCE!

  • i always thought he was black...lol

    guess not

  • Wow. Amazing. To be so young and so full of passion. Beautiful.

  • He is 27 ^^ (I know that is young in the eyes of most of the living earth, however, he is often mistaken in only appearence for much younger :P)

Full of passion indeed. And intelligent without pretension!

  • he is AMAZING.

    and very cute =]

  • six xtring suit know how to write and the originality behind his other work is amazing and a word of advice ur not gonnna get signed by not respecting other artist thats somthing we dont look that could lose u a record deal, and think about somthing i no that brett has played with dave mathews john mayer and so many others that u think they would think oh wow that sounds like bob dylan

  • no i sont mean this song is original i AGREENWITH THE SOUNDING like b dyl but this guy was signed and i no personally the he was signed from his other songs, if you can tell me what genra exactally of music he is then ill admitt to him not being original

  • ok, so all of you so called musicians out there hating on this guy. you need to lern somthing. how many of you use power chords well u better not caus every one else does. and bob dylan was and is a legend and i think if this guy can sound like him then thats a good thing, allthough it doesnt sound a like much at all. Take is from a producer when i look at musicians to see if i should sign them i look for originality and based on other songs by this guys he is pretty original

  • dude i disagree....as much as i fell in love with his sound....i lost alot of new found respect for this guy....this flat out sounds way to much like "i want you"....the progression is the same....the only thing different is its only acoustic and the words are different....shame ...such a shame.

  • 1) power chord analogy doesn't work; power chords can be utilized in an infinite amount of ways, whereas this is a chord-by-chord copy, hence the initial recognition by so many people to 'I Want You' 2) if you really are a producer and see this as an example of originality, your label is in trouble

  • 3) there is no problem with using the relatively common C, Em, Am, G chord progression (which is used here capo'd on 7, capo 5 in 'i want you') as long as something about the melody, beat, or time signature is different from the original, or if it is released as a cover. this is not a cover, but outside of the lyrics, it's Dylan's song.

  • owow. im amazed and just amazing.

  • hmm ok so i went and listened to the song by bob Dylan called I want you... yea it is very similar. Yes he prolly was influenced by that song greatly. But maan thats how art is made you take from the best and incorporate it to make your own.. as a songwriter myslef i do the exact same thing... but in the end its a different song...

  • I appreciate all forms of art and personal expression but I really have a problem accepting this guy as an artist. He's not doing anything creative. Everything I hear in this song says it's just re-hashed stuff from other people. Wait, I understand that everything is, to some degree, someone else's. But, the difference is that they take it in a totally different direction and make it their own. This guy is just kinda' goofy. He desperately wants to believe he's an artist.

  • i don't agree with you at all... i can tell hes doing that from the heart. Orginality is hard to come by these days.. hes alot better than most crap out there.

  • True. I'll give him that. There is much worse out there. I was just saying that as far as first impressions go, I'm too distracted by his subtle nuances attempting to be "unique" for me to really get into anything he plays. When I consider an artist, I usually have a very good "radar" for posers. I look at him as a guy who got a guitar and learned a bit and then "Forced" some lyrics together overtop his playing. But, he himself doesn't appear to be a major talent or something.

  • Ouch, I thought yous guys were just being a bunch of haters but those two songs are too similar. As a musician myself I incorporate, even rob and steal good stuff, it keeps the stuff alive and there isn't anything truely original. But when you take it this far... ouch

  • You're right. He's a thief. He probably was hoping few people out there wouldn't remember the Dylan song enough to recognize his copy. But, unfortunately these days, that's pretty common with desperate people looking to force out talent they don't possess. Clearly, anyone can see he can play the guitar a little. But, his singing voice seems so disconnected from his real voice.Sort of like when Adam Sandler plays his guitar and sings funny songs with a silly voice.Just seems fake

  • The great Bob Dylan would be the first to admit to being a copycat, check your history. He regularly used Woody Guthrie stuff amongst others. How do you think music has developed throughout history? In fact your negative opinion, which smells of bitter jealousy, was also probably copied. I suppose it could be put down to a diference in taste but don't have a dig just for the sake of it.

  • BOB DYLAN I WANT YOU (rip off much) its not bad to make your influences obvious, but dont just steal chords and melody.

  • RIGHT ON!

  • Pinche rata!!! A la hoguera!!!

  • Si claro! Es en sin verguenza que no tiene ni una gota de talento. Parece un poco tontito en la cabeza.

  • great stuff.

  • One of my favorite new artist finds! Love his style!

  • I'm sick of you idiots. The melody sounds "slightly" similar Dylan's, but his style is completely different, and his voice is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Plus, it's not like this guy sat down one day and said "I like this song, I'm just going to take it and no one will notice." Just enjoy the music. Great song.

  • Very good point. I agree.

  • Well said!!

  • j'ai vu qu'il tournait avec John Butler Trio, je viens de découvrir, très bon, à suivre, heureuse de connaitre et merci à John, j'ai vu Kaki King en France en première partie

  • wow !! a real artist first in many years!

  • its been a while since i've hated on this guy but jowkdd is right.. the vocal paterns and the chord progression is exactly the same as that dylan song.. like seriously i just listened to it on the youtube here and it really really is not his song. maybe his words.. which isn't saying much

  • He may very well be a talented musician, but concerning this particular song - Dylan could probably sue if he cared to (he doesn't).

  • this chord structure has been used numerous times, but usually bands take their own angle with them by changing the melody/voice and/or time signatures and rhythm. this is a blatant ripoff of Dylan's "I Want You" (i actually thought it was a cover when i first heard it) because even the melody remains the same - including the lowering in pitch in the second part of the verse - as the Dylan original.

  • And this goes out to ALL haters... find something you can be descent at, contribute to something. anything. dont shit on quality positivity.

  • Brett Caudill- His condition = dominating you mentally, musically, artistically....annually.

  • i love this guy he is amazing!

*click me name u no u want 2!

  • does this guy have a condition or something? not that it matters, but it looks like he might.

    either way, he's talented.

  • Very nice !

    5 stars!

  • Every tone has been played already.. if you look for originality why don't you people listen to someone who has invented a brand new instrument.. geez.. This guy's just expressing his feelings through this song.

  • all chord structure has been done I will give it that but this is just TOO close having a common chord progression is ok, but having an exact rhythm of chord progression strumming style vocal melody and vocal structure is down right stealing..its too much to just be considered "coincidence"

  • Ever hear of "form"?

  • I've heard of plagiarism, listen songs like Tom Petty's Mary's Last Dance and Dani California, is a perfecty example of what is just common chord structure, and after listening to this Vanilla Ice seemed legit its a good song but I just can't listen to it without feeling cheated.

  • ok normally I don't say this cause I give musicians a chance...but oh my goodness listen to this song then go youtube Bob Dylans - I want you

    its too close chords/melody/vocal melody

    its pretty upsetting.

  • man I thought just the same. Not sure I agree with the upsetting bit.

Lies have short feet and no need to get upset.

  • sounds like Jim Croce

  • i LOVE this song xD

  • Who really cares what a crooked crecendo is man ...a song can stray from fact or diction... not everything has to be weighed out perfectly... thats boring. It's about creating imagery.. and it's called poetic liscense.

  • just to clear it up.. i'm not bashing anyone who likes this thing. but i am bashing this guy.. what is a crooked crescendo anyway?

  • Iloved you music ;)) great!

  • it's something about where the verses are coming from that bugs me out. all added up, it's too much like one song. Of course I wish i could write songs that were this close to something from bringin it all back home, but I don't know if I'd put it on my album or on a radio show. But Dylan...he's a master theif, you can be in awe of how and what he stole.

  • A little more on what Dylan stole?

  • omg...lots of songs are exactly the same rhythm and melody ..still not the same song. if everyone was such a legalist we would have no new songs.

  • how can you lose respect for a guy with such guitar skills, such a great voice and who writes lyrics like these, just because one of his songs has the same melody as one of bob dylans

  • this is a complete rip of bob dylan's "I want you"..wow just listened and its true, kinda lost a little respect for the guy...

  • Verry simmilar but I wouldn't call it a "complete rip" rather a strech but almost the same structur&melody

  • hey that was good. glad i stumbled into this dude

  • sorry... I just read some older comments, I'm not trying to start up that again. I have much respect for his songs and I also really like his voice...and Dylan's!

    p.s. listen to Joanna Newsom

  • know that I'm not bashing cause I like it alot but does anyone else hear this song as srikingly similair to Dylan's "I Want You"?

  • Beautiful Cream! Awesome Talented & Mesmerizing Performance... Bravo! Cream From D Milky Way. TNX

    Peace & Cosmolove

  • Damn, I never realized my boy Brett got so big...

  • I love Brett.

  • Excellent performance. Nice editing and mic job.

  • stothepizzle - you're the hack who can't recognize true talent.

11/30 in San Diego! Can't wait for the show!!!

  • i take it back, pizzle. :)

  • Enteresting mix with never a down side.

  • how old is this dude?,... 16?

    my mom likes him.

  • A few years shy of twice that, apparently.

  • man you better talk to tom waits

    fucking mocking birds

  • Doesn't even remotely sound like I Want You. Different chords, different tempo.. different. WAY different.

  • This guy fuckin rocks I love his Cd and Imma guy lol

  • It's not Dylans songs that's terrible.. It's his voice... :P

  • DMR is right sadly enough this is a rip off Bob Dylan's song I want you. Go listen to it. I still respect BD for his musical talent.

  • Thank you for the music! keep on going!

  • What a great little song! Real music in opinion. Unique voice def. reminds me of Dylan as well. Great style!

  • Great Song ,lyrics and melody. Cool..very cool.

  • That melody belongs to Bob Dylan " I want you"

  • yea

er ist das beste was i in denn letzten jahren so gehört habe. echt ein hammer. wenn wer was anderes sagt bekommt er einen einlauf

  • i wont deny his musicianship but i just dont dig the quality of his voice to be bluntly honest. but thats not me saying he's a bad musician at all, im sure if i tried to sing anything like this id be mocked by far more pple.

  • i mean, it does sound like bob dylan, but hes got talent, he can sing and play... and it actually sounds in sync. but yeah... he does sound like neal from family guy, or seth's (the guy who does chris's voice) original voice.

  • this is a cute song

  • this is bob dylan - i want you..

  • his voice, guitar playing and lyrics go great together i this song.

  • doesnt his voice resemble that one nerdy guy who loves meg on family guy?

  • lol yeah pretty much.

  • haha, youre actually right, ahhahaha funny shit

  • I can't agree with criticisms of Brett's voice. I like it. The guitar playing sets it off nicely, kind of like a polished stone mounted in a suitable setting.

  • good

  • i think he's exactly the kind of quirky dude to cause some buzz and get there. his guitar technique is simple and effective, his voice broken enough to matter, and his lyrics are kind of endearing, to the extent that the alliterations actually don't sound too bad.

  • I love this song

  • I can't believe how hung up people are on how this guy looks. He's so talented and from what I've seen has a really cool personality. Actually, I think he looks a lot cooler than most of the chumps who try so hard to look like everyone else.

  • The guitar is amazing...but his singing makes him sound retarded.

    AMAZING guitaring.

Just not clearly sung, and he has a speech impediment so it sounds a little weird.

  • wtf are you talking about amazing guitaring... look up chet atkins, hopefully from there you'll find some new music to hear with great guitar, than you'll hear some real amazing guitaring that's not so boring and repetitive. this is nothing by comparison, really.

  • interesting voice

  • Brett Dennen = The Beezneez!

  • Brett Dennen Rocks!

  • people insult others because they are jealous of a talent they dont have, or its the only thing that makes them feel better.

  • funny glasses

  • nice hair...

  • Rock on dude! Phenomenal guitar, love the song and the voice is different and in tune. Great falseto (spelling).

  • neat.

  • He is actually great to see in concert...I saw him open for COlin Hay last year, and then with a full band on his own this year....he's got some great tunes...I loves me some Brett Dennen...

  • But honestly people ...

    She's mine ... sorry

  • One gets a sense that your singing from the heart. Wonderful

  • very good song, something special

  • Not bad, nothing special but a nice song

  • this dude is a songwriter--don't judge on his voice, this song is amazingly constructed and could make a lot of money if published
