I know because I acquired Mrs. Landen's personal photo album of all her students from 1928 to 1962. The album was found in an abandoned storage unit in L.A. and was put up for auction of which yours truly was the winning bidder. It is a fabulous and rare collection I am proud to own and will soon be put up on my website.

The thing that always amazes me about Shirley is that she does the one thing that most child actors under 7 NEVER do (and I'm being generous with that age). She listens to the other actors in the scene and, actually, responds to them. She doesn't look just beyond the camera (where her mother would be) to rattle off what she memorized. She's really present in the scene! Not to mention she was a dance prodigy. And she's five!!! No wonder she's still considered the greatest child star of all time.
You can really see how this film launched Shirley where her previous ones had not. This was the first to really show off her talent and showcase it. In the earliest scenes she could sort of just be another "cute kid" on the screen, but when she comes out and sings and dances, it must have just blown audiences away! We know ST so we expect it, but she was a total surprise. People came back to see this otherwise mediocre film JUST to see Shirley in that scene. :)
It is so sweet!!! In this movie Shirley Temple was very young. You have to watch it untill the end to see her dance-performance with James Dunn! Such a good thing!!!
@MsLittle1105 At that point in time it wasn't something they really worried about. Children were more obedient and did as they were told, and people were more likely to watch out for any who seemed lost.
