I first heard this song in the theme to the short lived NBC TV Drama "LAX". So sad the show went off the air, but at least I got exposed to ELO as a result. I couldn't be happier. One of the all time great bands. Jeff Lynne is a genius.

the effect is called a vocoder. It's a device that takes 2 inputs, the 1st is the carrier wave making the actual sound, the 2nd input is known as the modulator which in this case is a voice, shaping the carrier.

I think there is no doubt Jeff was a fan of The Beatles. Listen to what he did with The Move. He definitely built off the Sgt. Pepper sound for sure. He also produced some of George Harrison's albums. He even collaborated with George in The Traveling Wilburys

I grew up with ELO amongst a lot of other amazing bands, but did you know on two visits to see the fab Take That, they use the end of this song with the strings section to start Shine. Was absolutely fantastic mixture of pop and pop classical. Thanks for the clip
