Genius. One of Devoto's best, and if I may say, one the most honest of his lyrics. Why this band isn't more well-known is simply beyond me. I'm a musician and I can't tell you how much this song inspired and influenced me. I can hardly think of another song which infected my mind in such a big way for a period of seven years as this one. 'Secondhand Daylight' is the ne plus ultra of Magazine, and all the many fans of 'The Correct Use of Soap' are, in my view, simply latecomers, and don't get it.
Magazine were one amazing band. Not just Devoto, but Barry Adamson on bass and John McGeoch on guitar.
