Two of my faves would be "Unknown soldier" by the Doors and "War" by Edwin Starr, Stiff Little Fingers did some goodens too, and covered Bob Marley's "Johny Was" very well. I am a League fan, but this is not great. I'm not saying that liking it makes you a simpleton, it's a matter of taste afterall.

Thanks for the information. I have viewed the videos. I find "1916" to be too romantic and uncritical about the battle and the deaths themselves. I find "The Call Up" to be better, with a glimse of everyday life before battle and against battle. "The Call Up" gives hope, "1916" only sorrow.

I didn't really feel like '1916' romanticised war so much as emphasised the tragic waste of it, maybe BECAUSE of the way it is romanticised- (or promoted or whatever)- but I do agree that, yeah, '1916' IS a HORRIBLY sad song, and that 'The Call Up' DOES give hope!

I do think the video tries to emphasize "the tragic waste" of war. But, the music they choose, and the scene the writer paints, has a bit of glorification to it, which overwhelms the tragedy and loss theme for me. It is an attempt that is too deeply buried.

I think my criticism is more of the music form and the choice of the tragic form itself. The music form is like an old church hymn or a military type song that tends to romanticize the scene for me, with shades of heroism. And, the tragic form of drama tends to emphasize the inevitability of death and destruction. In this way, as we discussed before, it gives less way forward than a song like "The Call Up" which gives youth a plan of action to avoid tragedy and go toward love and life.

'The Call Up', I agree, is a very positive song, and I think it says something for each person thinking about where this is going, and that they have to take responsibility and not just be led off to a war.
