  • The two problems with the ZX Spectrum where the limited colour Pallete and the poor sound chip Having said that Hyper Sports had decent sounds They must have been pushing it to the limits

  • I missed meeting up with Mat Smith by a few weeks, us both in Liverpool and all. Maybe we could have formed a double act called "The Smithereens" or something!

    But there is still time!

  • It would have made for an interesting combination. Two bedroom programmers driving each other to the limits. Hyper Miner would have been a classic! You need to call yourself twins or brothers to get away with it though. Get a hold of Mat and do it!

  • There was a pole vaulting event - but I ran out of memory and had to remove it.

  • Ran out of memory? Ran out of time more like! Have you never heard of Day 1 and Day 2? A tape has 2 sides! If only the 128K had been out at the time. Maybe you should do a re-make and put the weightlifting bloke in a leotard and stockings and suspenders.

  • Yeah but that cost real money! And leotards aren't cheep! I was on a £4,600 and got a £500 bonus for doing this! Ocean got sqillions (techical term)! Actually, one of the reasons of leaving out the pole vault was down to the C64 programmer (Dave Collier) fucking up his version. Mine was done and dusted.

  • Just make it stockings and suspenders then. The C64 was a fuck up anyway! Get your pole up here!

  • I've just realised how funny that weight lifting is! LOL!

  • It's not funny when one of your mate's is trying to put you off when your trying to lift by saying "look at his pants" just to make you fail. Even today I still can't get that out of my head when attempting it without giggling.

  • It's the wobbly legs that sell it! Well, that and thousands of pounds of magazine advertising!

  • Now you're putting me off again. "Look at his wobbly legs and underpants". I will stick a piece of paper over that part of the screen in future. Don't think the top weight is possible on modern keyboards though. I remember the Crash review with the Pole Vault screenshot! I went out and bought it on that alone.

  • In one of the early mag ads (before the game was released with Bob Waklin's artwork), one of the screen shots is upside down! What a great art department we had! Clue - if the text is upside down then you have messed up! Or down!

  • When us workers did an Ocean in-house mag ,the art / advertiment staff got all shirty! And the head of that department (nameless) came and shouted at us all.

"How would you like it if someone came along and did your job for you?"

To which I stood up out of my chair and said...

    "Be my guest".

  • Lol! Don't shout at me whoever you are you big fucking ape or I'll make a crap game called Krazy Kong.

I take it there was a big clear out and the boys from C-Tech walked in to a Lazy Kong era. It looks like fun on the videos but obviously it was all for the cameras.

You should have teamed up with Mat Smith after the "be my guest" comment.

  • Codemasters ripped-off that idea with Fast Food. I always found that it was easier to turn the mag upside down to see the screen. Call me picky but I got used to it!

  • I didn't know that! And Fast Food is one of those denienced games! Which I have copied on one of my hard drives. Like everyone else. Go on 'Darlings'! Sue me for the price of a really slow budget game!

  • Fast Food is not denied if you own it like what I do. I've never heard of Darlings! Did they program anything on the speccy?

  • Well, the Darlings are, or were, Codemasters before they sold out. And if they take me to court I'll challenge them for using the word / phrase "Codemasters".

  • The Olivier brothers were surely the Coinmasters! Ferrari this, Ferrari that. Any chance of a simulator?

  • Nope. Defo the Darlings!

"Richard and David Darling, were both appointed Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2008 for services to the computer games industry."

    Where's my fucking CBE? Gits!

  • I'm joking! That's cos they're middle class twats and they know the right arseholes. Next thing you know they'll be spin doctors for any political party that's popular. I'm not joking now! Bring back the Dizzy Twins and bedroom programmers.

  • Are you saying I'm not middle class? Are you calling my pint "a woman"?

    Pick your window!

  • You are probly upper class lik wat I was before I become a snob and decide to take time off to look after my finances wen I got fined out, like! That pint is mine! I have triple glazing so any window will do me! Alfred Hitchcock is watching!

  • That will be the rear window then. And there is no-one on the planet less middle of upper lass than me! And I have the stains to proove it! From the stain glass windows! On my rear!

  • @SPINNYFUCK That's like the time my mate had the joystick between his legs and was jerking away; I commented that it looked like he was wanking, to which he burst into laughter and failed!

  • I'm a pro at the challenge starting from 1:10.

Search and Find my video on YouTube named:

Hyper Sports - World Record - NES

    and watch in HD

  • I will check your video out mate.

  • the weight lifting seemed to go on for ever waiting for those lights to go on. never managed the super heavy weight i dont think. the keyboard could not sustain the punishment!!

  • Trying to get the timing right to press the fire button when the guy was flashing was difficult. I used to get put off in this event because the guy was standing there in his underpants.

  • The secret is to tap the keyboard really slowly! Not hammer it! BUG!

  • I can no longer hammer the keyboard at my time of life. The really slow method is more my style nowadays but I still can't seem to get it up!

  • clay pigeon shooting was my fave. bit easier on the old fingers. it was nice to shoot the duck at the end if you hit all targets.

  • One of the easier events along with the swimming, but that didn't last as the following events took it out of you. I remember my mate going crazy as I hammered away at his keyboard lifting the Super Heavy, lol!

  • Just a GREAT GREAT game!

  • It sure was! Those were the days!

  • My god. You can actually do the vault section. I could only get past that with luck :(

  • The vault took a bit of doing when I originally played this game years ago. Get an easy qualifier in first and then go for the big scores. Press fire on the board, and when the guy is vertical on the horse, press fire again and thump left and right like mad and press left and fire to land. Or, just keep thumping left and right and hope for the best.

  • iloved this game

  • Hypersports and Daley Thompson Decathalon were great. Twenty three years later they still provide a lot of fun!

  • i can't get the spectrum emulator working on my pc because it says it's too fast. how do i do it?

  • What emulator are you using?

  • it's called z80

  • Try Spectaculator 30 day trial version from Worldofspectrum dot com. Far superior and easy to make videos.

  • That should be worldofspectrum dot org.

  • i used spectaculator and it worked, i been playing on hyper sports and supertest. in supertest to you know how to do the diving event?

  • Press up key to start of 3 times then let the board go as low as possible for the best rebound. Then use the left and right keys after to rotate and land. It's all about landing in the water without messing it up! 3 Rotations should do it. Always land headfirst.
