Late one night during a rainstorm, I was driving along a deserted city street, seeking a coffee shop. The tshhh-tshhh-tshhh of the windshield wipers in the darkness had an almost hypnotic effect. Suddenly, "Island" came on radio. It seemed as though the piece was written for the mood. When I found a coffee shop, I phoned the station to learn the piece was called "Island" by Art of Noise. I bought the album. "Island" is a real mood piece...gives one a sort of etherial experience. Terrific!
I don't know how it affects others, but this song and video transports my mind to a warm beach somewhere in paradise. It helps me momentarily forget that I'm suffering through my last stinking winter up here in New England.
@wiseroldfart: Best description of that sound I've ever heard! Wish that music had been around in the winter of 1959, when I was a young sailor freezing his ass off on a ship in Newport, R.I. ( I'm now an old fart sunning myself in Southern California.)
First got introduced to this song by a friend fifteen years ago when i was 14 years of age. I felt in love with the ethereal and ambient sound. I never got to ask her what it was but i remembered it resonating deeply within me. After all this years, it has accompanied me on various highlights in my life, constantly orchestrating it's luscious harmonies within my mind. I hoped that one day we would be reunited again, and today was the day when i heard a friend play it at his shop. :)
For anyone interested, this was inspired by a piece of music by Robert Mellin and Gian-Piero Reverberi, generations of school children will recognise as the theme of "The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" (1964). It is an original work but is clearly takes its inspiration from it.
Indeed this music was released on the same album (Ambient Collection) as "Robinson", a wonderful homage to that work.
"Island" has also been broadcast as a video segment by Channel 4 UK as part of the "Art of Landscape" ambient television series (AoL formerly a cable channel broadcasting relaxing music videos).
This is one of their songs that really let's Anne Dudley classical training come out. Still a bit of "techno beat machine" to it, but more symphonic than most of their stuff. less "dance" type.
It's not even their best album. The three that went before it are all better I think. I've been a fan since they started out in 1983 with 'Close to the Edit'. Try the albums 'Daft' 'In no sense nonsense' and 'In Visible Silence'. Songs like 'Ode to Don Jose', 'Crusoe', 'Camilla, the old old story' and 'three fingers of love' are just awesome.
I first heard of Art of Noise in the early 90's watching the European Figure Skating Championships. The German Pairs used this music and I was mesmerized by their performance and the synchronization to this amazing music. I rushed out to buy Below the Waste and the whole album is a classicC
I don't know what you mean by 'ambient of the video'. It's not the official video for this song. I don't think this song has an official video so I made one myself.

Nope it *is* "Island".
"Robinson Crusoe" is indeed similar (sort of a reprise of "Island"), but the track here is "Island".
