Thanks for posting. I thought I'd hallucinated this as a kid in NY. So many questions... Why was there a king in modern-day (post "Battle of the Bulge") France? Why was the garbage truck in the parade? How did Monsieur Renoir get the movie star to marry the king? Still, I imagine the roundabout navigation of the byzantine European bureaucracy is pretty accurate.
I am so thrilled you posted this. Its one of those cartoons i remember fondly and talked about with a childhood friend for years. When ever I am having a bad day. I know I can come here and my mind will wander back to a part of my childhood I remember fondly. Thank you.
Like so many others here, this cartoon was one of my earliest childhood TV memories. I freaked out when I came across it recently. I'll never forget the hilarious repetitiveness of the guy's plea to fix the pothole, and the ending is just hysterical. When I was a kid, I used to sing that song ; well, at least try to. I never fully understood what he was saying, exactly. Anoher thing: I remember truly being creeped out- scared, even- of the ogre face the one guy turns into when he shouts "NO!"
I was searching for this cartoon as well, but my problem was that I saw it in Polish when I was little so I never heard ZEE KING and the rest of fantastic stuff in here. All I remembered was ratatatam ratattam ratatatatatatatatam - bum [garbage] ;)
I this is my earliest memory, and I've always wanted to see it again. Must have been 65 or 66 when I saw it, like three years old... thanks so much. I feel kind of emotional now...
One of my alltime favs as a kid. Glad to see it posted online.
Like another post said, since I never knew
what the title of this was, I ALSO only found this by googling:
Zee king, zee premiere.. zen all zee ministers
Army, navy, ...department sanitaire
I clearly remember that little ditty since they showed this frequently in the early 70's in the NY tri-state area. I'm almost 48 now, and it's as vivid in my mind as it was 40 yrs ago.
I've known this bloody cartoon for ever! I still remember all of that dialog. I would parade around my house driving my sisters crazy with it! On occasion, I still do! LOL!
Gotta send this to them! Many thanx for posting this!!!
I live in Connecticut - just outside New York City - it had to be Ch 5, 9, 11 that I heard ir on. It has been stuck in my head for 40 years. This is incredible. Many thanks for posting this!
this is one of my mom's favorite ones since she was little.however there is another one with the french match maker my mom whats to find. it's the one where he get's this hector guy to fall in love with the princess. so sombody tell me what's it called.
@videoguy3333 Idiot. Really, there is no other word to describe what you are.
What if someone came along and wrote: "A German who isn't a Nazi? You must be joking." You wouldn't find that funny, would you? Your comment was just as unfunny and distasteful as that.
Besmirching the memory of thousands of Frenchmen who were killed by your goose-stepping ancestors, labeling an entire nation of 70 million people as cowards, that's pathetic.
This cartoon would be replayed for years on New York City TV when I was a kid. So much so that I remembered the freaking words Army, Navy, Department Sanitaire, boom, kelump. Seems like I'm not the only one who had that burned into my brain cells, lol. I thought I'd never find it until I just came to the idea of Googleing Army, Navy Department Sanitaire, and BOOM, there it was, lol. Thanks for posting this so I can now free up some much needed brain cells for other useless things!
I remember seeing this on "Fun-o-rama" (from KVOS TV Bellingham), viewing it from Vancouver. I too thought I was the only person to remember this cartoon, that tune never left my brain...40 years later it's great to see it again and actually comprehend the lyrics! Thanks poster!
Last time I saw it was also over 40 yrs ago as a kid, but when I was in my 20s I was talking to a friend who also knew it. Funny thing is that we both misheard one of the words the same way. We both thought he was saying "Veedishtee" when he really said "Filthy" ("Feelthee").
We thought it was some French word for "disgusting"! Now I feel like an idiot. LOL,
Oh my god my mom is going to be so happy I found this. She's been wanting to see this cartoon for months but she could never remember the title for it. Thank you so much for posting it.
I have been looking for this cartoon for 40 years...I always remembered it fondly.....his signing recreation of the parade has never left me...This is SO COOL!
I have been thinking of this cartoon for over 40 years. I didn't remember the name but always remembered him explaining the parade route. Army palumpa bum Navy palumpa bum Dept of sanitation plump garbage, filthy, disgusting..... this has been revolving and wondering in my mind for over 40 years.
I'm glad to hear that. I thought I was the only one. I almost thought I dreamed this cartoon because no one I explained it to remembered it. I'm happy there are others whose brain works like mine.
@chuggachuggawoowoo really incredible how many of us were affected by it, quite remarkable collective unconscious, yes? The song has been in my head since 1966 or so, glimpsed once, never forgotten.
FINALLY! Have had this music in my head since I was 5! Now to find the iceing on the cake. All I can remember was it looked like a Rankin Bass production and it had a little elf guy singing "Come Out Unicorm, I've Come To Capture You" over and over. Saw it on WNET 13 here in New York around 1970...
@drbriandead Yeah me too, New York TV over and over and over again. I always laughed at it and of course like everyone else here, got the song burned into my brain. LOL. Seeing how many people had this reaction to this cartoon, the government or advertisers should analyze it because it definitely effected a lot of people!
Add me to the list of those who have been wondering about this toon for years. The last time I saw it was about 38 years ago. I don't know why I thought of it today, but I googled "army, navy" and "filthy, disgusting" because those are the lines I remembered the most. And here I am. Thanks for uploading this!!
Classic! I always thought this cartoon had disappeared into the archives of time, but here it is! Thank you for making it available! Of course, as an adult, it is a sad commentary about how socialism doesn't work!
I've been searching for this for years. I tried Googling the words to the song as I remembered them, but to no avail. Finally about 20 minutes ago, I tried the words "garbage French cartoon", and there it was - HaHa!!!! Seeing it for the first time in almost 40 years, it seems like it was only yesterday that I saw it last!!!
Thanks for this. I love youtube. I started out searching Triplets of Belleville and was reminded of this. I thought I saw it at the movies. I never forgot it though.
Just like all before me, I've been searching for this cartoon for eons!! I lived in OK and it used to play on Cartoon Circus on KTUL.
Thanks so much for posting it!!
You don't happen to have other cartoons I've been looking for which seemed to be by the same people. I barely remember them. One was the wind stealing water, and the other was a little girl who found a magic bowl that made ice cream when she circled it with her finger 3 times. 3x the other direction turned it off.
This was my favorite cartoon when I was a kid in NYC and when we moved to Texas, I never saw it again. More than 30 years later, I have found it! And it is STILL FEELTHY! DEESGUSTING! MERCI!
This was the sequel to "L'Amour The Merrier" (1957), which introduced the character of "Monsieur Renoir", the official matchmaker of "The Kingdom". One of Seymour Kneitel's better Paramount cartoons of the late '50s. Great score by Winston Sharples (part of which was later recycled in "FELIX THE CAT" and "THE KING AND ODIE"). Jack Mercer is the voice of "The King"...
Thank you Thank you Thank you - I've been searching for this oldie-but-goody cartoon forever! I've typed in "department sanitaire" to search for it on YouTube so many times and finally it's here! Great song ra-ta-ta-tum!
Thanks for posting. I thought I'd hallucinated this as a kid in NY. So many questions... Why was there a king in modern-day (post "Battle of the Bulge") France?
