  • you dont hit anything while spinning a staff. as you see he is holding the staff firmly with BOTH hands not the fingers. and due to the laws of physics it carries momentum the longer it spins the more force it carries. you dont have to swing hard to lay someone out.

  • crappy sound effects ftl

  • so once you go to your front spin u create a vortex of wind that knocks back the foe right? (i really miss my imagination)

  • wow. this is incorrect. you use your hole hand and thumb not one finger and thumb.

  • Cool, I do kickboxing and one of the sessions we do is purely on weapons. I know the nunchuks, half of the bokkun kata and I know a bo staff kata. The only thing is I want to do more and learn some new "tricks", as it were, so this is really helpful and should hopefully motivate to practice more and eventually come up with my own kata. So I want to thank you for posting up these videos =]

The only thing is I keep missing what village you say you are training at ~

  • You have MAGIC hands!!

  • If you control it between your fingers there ain't gonna be any power behind it and you are going to drop it when it hits anything.

  • Mother of god

  • do you know what that bo staff is called that is like a small stick but becomes big later please tell which one it is

  • There is another way of doing this, more easy, but your hands need to be more flexible and it's faster, more accurate and you can use 1 hand.. check out my channel!

  • bout time i found a video like the stick fighting i do, awsome vid

  • thats awesome

  • haha.. funny thing is... i instinctivly spin to the left. cuz i'm left handed

  • excellent master, congratulations from Chile

  • Comment removed

  • lol u cant hurt anyone after it hits something it will fall beyond your control, monks controll their staff with both hands mostly for maximum strength.

  • Nice pose at the end.

  • what bo staff do you use? competition tapered or straight and wich is the best to use?

  • the ninjutsu way of spinning the bo staff is so much easier.

  • I just got my bo staff. LET'S DO THIS!

  • @bboywaterstepxiong : this is just for practice and improoving your skills. nobody would spin his staff in a fight :D

  • where can i get a bo staff like the one he has, anyone know?

  • AWESOME!!! Self defense

  • Cool!

  • not to criticize, but wont spining it between your fingers lessen the grip? if you hit something while its between your fingers it fall.

  • That was great man

  • XD Gl spining the actuall wooden staff >.< .. spining with index and middle finger ~ switch to your thumb and grab the bo with the other hand will just slow down the momentum... I will do a tutorial on this.

  • Too fast!!

  • YATTA!

  • The move was originally created to deflect arrows. Now it's really just used for basic defense.

  • @chaztheLM Really? Interesting o.o. I wonder if the yari units did such a thing to deflect arrows..

  • Too bad! Very fast

  • you use this move when your opponent pulls a gun out

  • Another thing. Put a piece of duct tape about 2 inches from the end of only one end of the practice bo staff so that you can analyze this better when he says "about a full rotation and a half".

  • @johnny102marvin Well good luck then!

btw im just curious how old are you?

  • I cut a piece of 1/4 inch PVC piping to a length of 3 feet. This way, I can sit at the computer desk and watch this video and follow along. The short 3 foot improvised bo staff allows you to practice this at the computer without smashing a regular size bo staff into the other things in the room. Also, try a double click on your mouse on the time line, so you can watch this video in real slow motion. "click-click" - stop and watch - "click-click" - stop and watch - "click-click" - etc.

  • Comment removed

  • @johnny102marvin Even better idea! You should buy a gun and shoot your computer screen! Then you won't have to watch the video at all! Much better than slow mo, IMO

    :p

  • I think it's supposed to be used as a deflection move. If someone wanted to hit you, there's a very small chance that they could get past a twirling bo

  • So what exactly does this move do? Where does it strike the other guy?

  • @yellowmustang71 the person comes running after u and hits the staff and falls down

  • @TheKingsnake22 Oh. Why would he be so stupid as to walk into a spinning staff?

  • @yellowmustang71 Well, you are correct. The Bo Staff is an obsolete weapon today. But, I want to learn it because it is a challenge. Why do people climb Mount Everest? Because it is there.

  • @johnny102marvin no offense, and i don't know if you are serious or not, but your first 3 comments sounded like some serious trolling. But now you sound like you were serious, which makes it very funny lol. Good luck with the bo staff! :) And good luck disarming someone with a gun with this move!

  • @yellowmustang71 Yep ! I am serious about learning the bo staff. This front spinning tutorial is just for show. I don't think it has any real useful self defense applications. I think it is all for "show". And, there is nothing wrong with that, because it is just a sport for entertainment. I think the real applications for self defense are straight forward moves without any flash or spins. What you learn from the bo staff might come in handy for improvised weapons.

  • I don't see how that's gonna help you out in a combat

  • @mrmacnoobster if someone broke out a pool stick and did that do you think they would stick around to find out where he would put it next?

  • Caleb wins. Fatality.

  • I dropped the staff and knocked the 9 key out of my laptop -_-

  • but can you spin a leek.... :D

  • if it goes through your finger your not actually holding it are you?

  • legal, que arte marcial PRATICA?

  • i think he is a expert martial artist

  • Isnt your dobok from Hapkido? Nice video btw :)

  • So my pen spinning skill might pay off :D

  • He doesn't have a good hold of it for most of the spin. what's that about?

  • Really? This ...isn't hard to understand, at all. If you think it is, perhaps you shouldn't be using a Bo Staff. And Unless you're ambidextrous like I am, you'll have to master it 'one' way, before you try mastering it the other. I've seen people do more damage to themselves by being stupid, than just practicing the right way.

  • its rly hard to understand. it would be hell of a lot easier if it was filmed from behind, so the viewer would see whats going on with the hands and do the same thing.

  • way too fast

  • i have a staff that is 2 staffs in one, the other part of it pulls out of the other part of the staff to make 2 ;)

  • Looks good!

  • I was never taught to use a bo like that :/

  • Yeah well I got a titanium staff with lawnmowers on each end... and it sparkles.

  • Nice video; How do you stop your index finger from hurting when you continuously roll the staff over it (the part near the first knuckle)? Is it just a beginner problem, does it get better with practice?

  • @northsideflemo yep. I actually do my spins differently though, however it serves the same purpose :) I roll the staff over the back of my wrist. Not as fast until you get some practice but offers more control of the staff :D Hope this helps. Dont give up :D

  • Is that lightweight competition bo staff?

  • now, i respect all martial arts, but why don't you do that with a REAL bo staff? you know, a PROPER one? 1 inch taller then the person, and made of REAL wood, not that flashy illuminum stuff, that takes no skill my staff is almost 10 pounds, and its made of WOOD! and i can still do all the tricks, bit harder because its thicker but i can still do it,

  • @FreeRunner5000 sounds like you need a cookie

  • @KriszPal Dude..a stick is a stick

  • @FreeRunner5000 sounds like you need a cookie

  • @FreeRunner5000 maybe its easyer to show people with staff he is using i understand your point that its not a propper one but im asuming he has good reason for using it

  • @FreeRunner5000 its called a sport bow and you need a hug and a muffin

  • i dont think you can do that with a thick bo staff . or if you could it would be very slow and unsteady . im just guessing

  • What martial arts is this? is it Ninjutsu or something different

  • @HockeyStickDefence it's bojutsu to be very specific

  • Now I have a much thicker pole (Staff), is this a logical technique for an inch-and-a-half diameter?

  • Comment removed

  • this dude is beast

  • my gosh i want a Bo staff, with any luck i'll be on my black belt a few months in of next year, and i didn't know that there was an actual art on this, i just twirl around whatever i find for the fun of it!

  • girls only like guys who have great skills!

  • what is the weight and length of this bo staff please ?

  • I can say with 95% accuracy that you are right handed

  • the first one i learned wen i was 7

  • Alhumdulillah i am able to do front spin, at starting my fingers started to hurt , but i will get used to it . :) .ZA

  • Very very nice thanks!!!!

  • where can i find one of these?

  • @Henpowercop martial arts store will have this. you can start of with any sticks, broom sticks are good too!

  • @mrdominicsee hahaha, i'm about to use a broom stick :) for starter

  • I can see that he studies taekwondo...Not many taekwondo schools teach bo staff..

  • @darthrudious I went to taekwondo for three years and they gave me a FREE bo staff cuz i kicked ass with it, but I only started training with it aaafteer I got my black belt

  • @FoxPaul1 im actually learning bo staff now that i have my black belt. took me four years though.

  • @WhiteTiger7789 Tight.

  • its not so far fetched the idea of deflecting arrows... if you where able to spin the bo fast enough, remember arrows are quite long so the time it takes for the entire arrow to pass through the spin or what ever its called, i could see a very skilled person being able to do that... unfortunatly these days they use bullets... lol

  • Uhm, ok but whre is Martial Art (i mean fighting techniques) in all of this? You cannot defend yourself on an street with some ... front spining ...

  • @r04r88 check out the other videos.....

  • @TheWertMan1177 @TheWertMan1177 Umm, ok - but still i dont see non of fighting techniques - tricks only - sure, they look cool, but you cannot defend yourself with it. Watch some real Martial Arts with (for ex.) Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi or other kobudo masters - then you will know what I mean by 'fighting techniques'.

  • bo staffs can really fuck someone up!

  • What is this dudes name?

  • Lmbo phone rings at 0:12 good vid though helps a lot thank you

  • I like how at the end the camera guy says to him that the time is over, is like "cut it naw, go directly to the pose, THE POSE!.

and he thinks, -OH the pose!. How was it? Ah, i remember. And then he strikes the gay pose.

  • i wouldnt recommend throught he finger technique for combat though. if your opponent strikes your staff whilst doing this your finger could easily break

  • @909gh0st909

i don't recomend twirling of any kind in combat...

  • @Jarno1510 th twirling came in handy way back when to deflect arrows other than that yeah some when say its useless

  • @LazyBasterd142

are you seriousl?! deflecting arrows... jeez.... i'm not going to argue about the usefullness of twirling, other than controll and coördination practice, but come on... deflecting arrows??! just show me 1 video of anyone deflecting arrows by twirling a bo.

  • yeh i agree. you can utilize the throws and "fancier spins" in real combat but the idea is to master is. a real master will have as much control of the staff when it's on the back of his wrist as when it is in the palm of his hand. However, it is also true that these techniques are counter-produtive in the hands of a beginner in combat. The spins arn't "a western thing" the point of it is to be incredibly familiar with all the possible movements of the staff.

  • I need a bo that can strike hard and fast yet is flexible, strong, and durable. Would a waxwood bo work? Opinion, please. I appreciate it. I use it for sparring and training no form competition styles.

  • @Sipher91

we use rattan (rotan). Same stiof they use for making furniture like beds and chairs. but try and find the hard type not the super flexible kind. Its hard and duarble and nearly unbreakable (we only nearly broke 1 bo in over 10 years, and that was after some serious abuse)

  • what? was he reaching for gun when he reached inside his shirt? lol.

  • We don't put it through our finger in my class, but there are different styles, and it's the same basic idea. Expert village is doing something right!

  • Also search "WuDang Kung Fu--8 Immortal Staff".

  • This is good for circus show only! If you are serious about learning to use a Bo Staff correctly in terms of Martial Arts. I've seen some really good clips, search for "Okinawan Kobudo - Bo Kata 1", "Kung Fu Weapon Training & Meihuaquan : Slamming Bo Staff in Shaolin Kung Fu", "Vietnamese Martial Arts - Clip 3 - Staff Technique". All have a good few hundred plus years history.

  • ixi totalmente errado o jeito q ele ensina vc n tem firmesa nenhuma assim..

um cara desse rodando assim n tem nem tempo de se defender ahauhauahuahuaha

  • This video title uses the term "martial art techniques." Considering that martial arts are for the defense of life, how is this spin going to be used?

  • @IEKUKATAKA It's used for getting used to switching stances with the bo and keeping it balanced

  • @Nathanroqs Can you imagine a serious fight in which a bo would be spun or even having to change hands?

  • @Nathanroqs Nonsense! Changing fighting positions with a bo for an experienced martial artist is not even a concern. There are three elements to bo fighting: 1. Be prepared, 2. Strike before being struck, 3. Don't have your weapon taken. All this twisting and spinning, turning and behind the back crap is western junk. It is a weapon for goodness sakes! Manipulation of the bo is great for handling exercises only and largely not needed in combat. Majorettes spin sticks, kobudo-ka learn to fight.

  • @IEKUKATAKA I was just guessing on the changing stances, but this would very much help you in terms of keeping it balanced.

  • I don't like this twirling, or any finger oriented spins... for combat at least.

Fingers aren't exactly the strongest part of the body, and regardless of how strong your fingers are, having your staff in a vulnerable position is not good.

Maybe for show or for transitions after you've made contact and are breaking engagement, but definitely not as strong as say the butterfly spin...etc.

    Over all good vid though.

  • awesome, this is an awesme video, ive always been practicing that, you really show it how to do it really good, thxs!!!

  • im sooooo sick of all the ads that pop up on the main screen.....keep your damn ads on the sidebar youtube!

  • iv always been wondering how to do the spin staff....awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • I accully practice in ta-kwon-do how you spin the staff is much diffrent than I thought in comparecin to other ways to soon it we kindof let it roll over the back of our hand then catch it I might post a video of it soon

  • you make it look difficult >:(

  • i prefer letting the bo roll over my hand

  • i dont see anything wrong with this pose

  • I still think its a gay pose... x.-

  • great for forms and tournys but that spin aint no good he doesint have enough contact on the staff. we use a butterfly spin I find it works better if your deflecting hits and such. : /

  • lol cheesy xD

  • i have a busted lip now

  • If you wanted to completely master a bo staff, wouldn't you want to be able to spin it and handle it both right AND left handed?

  • @jacksonbaker94 would knowing how to write with your left hand (even though you are not left handed) make you better at writing?

  • @SanjiKunTheLoveCook If I wanted to master it, I'm sure I would.

  • @jacksonbaker94 though i don't think there's any actual improvement in using any weapon with the left hand being right handed (or vice versa). also it would be three times harder to get the same results, since training the "less dominant" hand takes a lot more concentration to make it work. u would basically need more time and energies to coordinate your moviments than mastering the skill.

  • @jacksonbaker94 thats what i thought...lol i watcheds this vid twice..one when i was beginning..and now..and i noticed that all this time i was doing it the wrong way.. check out my vid..i filmed it when i was beginning haha..but now im kinda better spinning the other way too.. im also not as repetitive anymore. just sayin :P

  • he can kick your ass then hell do your sisters nails and hair

  • American flag on his right arm is backwards. Stars should lead! Otherwise a nice training video.

  • arg how do people do it i cant put my arm and hand upside down arg lol

  • Ever1 always wants to learn Spins... In my school we do sparring with bo staffs, ill let u know now... dont do spins. only spins we use is when he did the number 2 strike, it is a parrying technique into a strike. BUT 5 star is a great beg bo technique good to see him doing it.

  • @Amishprn86 I find spins good for intimidating and awing untrained people. I agree that spins aren't good to use while sparring.

  • HAHAHAHA 1:30 SECS "go here, go to your front spins, shhhhhhh"

  • Nice pose at the end (LOL). It looks really complex but I am getting better! I keep hitting myself though!

  • @CynderFlames12345 keep hitting yourself, that way you wont be afraid of hitting yourself anymore.

  • @smkymcnugget420 LOL. After all of that you are right I am so used to hitting myself it doesn't matter any more! I'm already well bruised- but it's worth it!

  • Uhm .. what if I am right handed but i feel more comfortable spinning the staff with the left hand ?

should i start spinning it with the right hand ?

    great video :)

  • I can't do it right because I don't have a bo staff and practice with lego rods or this big stick that's really heavy I found outside

with the lego thing I keep making it fly into the wall or catching it in between my fingers

and the big stickI can't even hold with one hand

  • @BioformerCorviz I don't have I bo staff either- I just use a broom handle that I painted!

  • @CynderFlames12345 lol

i should use a broom handle, too bad I don't have one

  • @BioformerCorviz You can buy them for like $2 at Woolworths or something like that. That is where I got mine.

  • @CynderFlames12345 doesn't matter now

i found a 6 foot bo staff behind a shelf while looking for the houdini chipmunk that invaded my house

  • @BioformerCorviz Cool. What Luck! LOL

  • @CynderFlames12345 also i found a MA spear 0_0

  • @BioformerCorviz Woah.

  • @CynderFlames12345 mhm, and tomorrow my mom might teach me to use the bo staff (not the spear, I'll probably accidentally stab myself)

  • @BioformerCorviz Cool! Maybe the spear is for another day....

  • @CynderFlames12345 or for another week

    or month

    or year

    or decade

    oh, try lifetime!

jk, I try after bo staff (you can figure 8 spin a spear!)

  • @BioformerCorviz LOL

Cool- maybe once you can spin the spear you should post a video of it

  • @CynderFlames12345 probably

and if I DO make a vid of me spinning it, I'll send it to you

  • @BioformerCorviz Cool. Thanks! And if you don't make a vid of it then just tell me when you can do it.

  • @CynderFlames12345 k

btw if I do make one I'll probably dedicate it to you and that guy ^

  • @BioformerCorviz Cool- thanks!

I never thought someone who owned a spear would be that nice!

  • @CynderFlames12345 probably cuz it's technically not my spear, idk

but it was your idea, so why not?

  • @BioformerCorviz Lol.

    Good point.

  • @CynderFlames12345 mhm

but i do know someone who if he had a spear he'd go beserk

meet chuck norris, who is insulted to think that you thought he needed a spear

  • Before my staff goes over my thumb it gets caught on my knuckles and it catches my thumb twisting both of them.
