  • Damn the music is irritating as hell! Please get rid of the music. My ears are hurting!

  • I full in love with Korean

I love their drama , songs , food , romantic , and everything is belong to them

    I from Saudi Arabia

    :)

    thanks

  • Do you have to use dried anchovies? Is there anything else you can use instead of that?

  • @uyenous yes, you can use chicken or beef broth instead of dried anchovy stock.

  • @Maangchi So if I use beef/chicken broth then do I just skip the second step (boiling water & dried anchovies)? And I just have to boil the broth alone?

  • the song is HAHAHA.nice song. what's the tittle? and can i used smaller anchovy instead?

  • this music sounds like the singer is dying slowly and painfully...

  • can I use myulchi dashida broth instead of the anchovies?Because I cant find them?

  • @TheLibrarylunch yes, you can. Use very little because the soup powder is usually salty.

  • Maangchi do you know how do you say (or pronounce) rice cake in korean. Cuz I have a korean store close, but problem is they don't speak english or spanish ... Just one speaks a bit of spanish... but maybe would be easier if I told them the korean name :/ please!

  • @erumisa It's called tteok:떡 : ) Check out the photo of this rice cake in the ingredient section on my website. All info you are looking for is posted. You can print out the photo of the rice cake and take it to the store.

  • @Maangchi thank you very much!! ups!! forgot to check first on your website hehe thanks for the answer though :D

  • @erumisa great! : )

  • what is the rice cake? some kind like fish ball?can u tell me more about it...n i'm from malaysia..i'm not familiar with this rice cake.

  • Can I make this w/o the anchovies.

  • @wanttoseemysnake yes, you can. Use chicken or beef broth.

  • LOL the background music is a song about dukbukki! lol i know it's weird but i think that's too EPIC!!!

  • lol I saw this on HelloBaby SHINee xD

I've always been afraid of korean cooking but this actually looks interesting ^.^ I'll try this someday!

  • Would you be able to do a video on how to make tteok? I've seen some but they all focus on using methods and tools I don't have, like a bread machine and bamboo steamer. I can't find anywhere nearby to buy tteok so I want to try making some but as I can only get things that are available from a typical English supermarket (and a bag of glutinous rice flour I got when travelling) or English kitchen, I don't know where to start, or even if it's possible.

  • @songbird72884 Let me think about a vide tutorial for rice cake for ddeokbokkie. I have never made rice cake for ddeokbokkie because it's always easy for me to find wherever I go. I need to do some experiments. Soak short grain rice overnight and drain. Then grind it finely and steam until well cooked, then pound it to make rice cake and make a tube shape. That's how it is made.

  • @Maangchi Thank you so much! That makes so much more sense than the instructions I found on other sites ^_^ They all mentioned I had to find a specific type of flour, but didn't say what flour I needed. None of them mentioned being able to do it myself. I may wait a while before trying, as I've never steamed anything other than vegetables, but now I know it could be possible, I'm definitely looking forward to it ^_^

  • what a very appropriate song :) My favorite DJ Doc Song kkkkk

  • hey the music is a bit too loud... :(

  • The music was driving me insane.

  • Hey Maangchi, what can I use instead of the dried sardines to make this? I can go back to the Korean grocery store, it's just kind of far away and I was wondering if there's anything I can use to replace it that'll taste as good

  • @delightracardeanne You can use chicken or beef broth. But later if you visit a Korean store, get some large size dried anchovies. Anchovy stock really makes ddukbkkie delicious. Good luck with making delicious ddukbokkie! Check out the recipe on my website please.

  • oh that must be the 3rd time that I watched your video but I just discovered that you don't put any Udang in it, it is surprising~

Tomorrow and the day after I will try this =)

I bought too much tok and don't know what else to do with it (and the rice cake soup) :/

Are they still good after being frozen?

  • @nanassse Yes, keep it in the freezer for your next batch of ddeokbokkie. You can add fish cake or noodles if you want. Good luck with making delicious ddeokbokkie. Check out the recipe and the photos on my website.

  • Can I use Anchovy paste instead of anchovies?

  • @aznsluvjenny no, dried anchovies make the broth delicious. Check out the recipe and the photos of dried anchovies on my website please. You can use chicken or beef broth.

  • I don't have anchovies, so can I use the Japanese fish powder?

  • @shim0may You could use it.

  • THE MUSIC, FOOD is just Perfect!!

  • have you ever tried adding ketchup into it? like 1tbs, i heard it makes it tastes more like street food ddeokbokki!

  • how do u make Ddukbokki with ramen? the shin dang dong or st

  • I want to make it! but i dont know if i can find rice cakes in Leeds, UK...

  • I hear DJ Doc in the background ^_^

  • @skincrx That's right! : )

  • ohh my goshh..just watching this makes my mouth water non stop...you are a complete pro!! thank you!!!

  • Is it alright to substitude the anchovies with something else?? Or if not can u taste the anchovies when the rice cake are cooked??

  • @hanna6550 Yeah anchovy stock is really delicious and it goes with ddeokbokki perfectly. But if it's not available or you wouldn't like it, use chicken or beef broth. It will work well too.

  • @Maangchi could I use vegetable stock instead?

  • @1260260 yeah, good idea.

  • i think some odang might be good too

  • i luv this so simple im korean and 11 even i can make this!!!! its simple

  • the correct romanization would actually be "Ddeokbokki" ^^

  • so~ awesome!! Are you Korean??:)

Thank you for loving your korean food ^^

Your Korean food's recipe is so!!! perfect!!!

I wanna eat food made by you:D

  • In a fashion that you are making dubokki, it looks so simple and plain. When I was making it, I had to buy bean sprout, fish cake, carrot, etc. I guess I don't need them anymore.

  • I HATE YOU , WHY DID YOU MAKE ME SO HUNGRY .

    Can I have some X)

  • I just had this the other day at a restaurant! After I saw how easy it is, I'm making it myself! Thank you, Maangchi!

  • @delightracardeanne Let me know how yours turns out if you make it.

  • Since you said we can use chicken or beef broth, how many cups do we use? Thanks!

  • are you korean ?

  • @eunhyuk37 yes she is

  • can you use chicken feet broth?

  • @B1N1A4 I think so. It will be delicious as long as you use delicious stock.

  • Can i ask what does the sugar do because i tried some from my friend and it was very very spicy she said that she put half of the amount of hot pepper paste and it was still so chilly

  • looks so simple..i want to try make it >.< i want to eat my own tteokbokki

  • isnt there suppose to be corn syrup?

  • can, i not use anchovy for this? like no anchovy

  • @MiizzK1 yes, skip it and use chicken or beef broth.

  • I don't have any dried anchovies. Is it really necessary or can I substitute it with something else?

  • @Raikaxxx You can use chicken or beef broth instead of anchovy stock. Good luck with making delicious ddeokbokkie!

  • Im just wondering. Is vinegared red pepper paste the same as hot red pepper paste?

  • @nurfatinatiqah different

  • I love this recipe =)

  • I had to try dukbokki because it's always on korean dramas...I love your recipe and video! It was so easy to follow and the end product looked and tasted awesome too! I made it the first time not knowing what to expect but now, a few months later, I find myself craving it...sooo good(:

    Thank you Maangchi!!!!

  • @swimmingrose55 I'm very happy to hear that you like this recipe. Cheers!

  • thanks! =)

  • Hi Maangchi! i love you videos! i have a question.i cannot find hot pepper paste in my supermarket.do you have a recipe for it?

  • @bigsistard It's coming soon. I made hot pepper paste with one of my readers. The hot pepper paste is being fermented in New Zealand now. : ) Check out my "Gapshida New Zealand" story on my website. When the fermentation is done, maybe March 2012, the video will be posted.

  • @Maangchi Okay! Thank you so much!

  • I really wish I was prone to spicy foods but Im not... So whenever I see this dish in korean variety shows I want to eat it but I cant!:(

  • 부대찌개도 한번해주세요 ^^

  • do you just throw away the anchovies?

  • @ericlala yes, I usually throw them away afterwards but sometimes eat them even though they are not delicious anymore. : )

  • i hit that

  • i want to ask, i cant find when i go for shopping, i cant find green onion.. They only have spring onion.. What is the different between spring and green onion..?

  • @NazeeraSHINee94 You can use either one. Spring onions have rounded bulbs and a little larger than green onions.

  • yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ! I saw this tasty Ddukbokki on a korean movie o___o

  • where to get the rice cake? is it somethin' common I could find at the supermarket?

  • @tchoochan

You won't be able to find it in all supermarkets so if possible try looking for it in your Asian District and if you can't find it you might have to restort to making your own rice cakes.

  • so easy to make! i just made it~

  • @P00ters1 awesome!

  • @Maangchi what can i use if i cant find the hot pepper paste

  • @hottiebling no it shouldn't be hard to chew on I cook something similar with ricecakes but it's not spicy and it comes out soft

  • I want to try this so bad....and u are so pretty :-)

  • PLEASE PLEASE make a tutorial on how to make Korean skewered sticky rice cakes (ddukgotchii or 떡꼬지)!!!! So far I've only found one tutorial on YouTube but it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

SO PLEASEEEEE IF YOU DO I WILL LOVE YOU!!!:D

  • @13nileyrocks Ok! Some day I will post it!

  • @Maangchi Thank youu!!!! :)

  • I have never eaten Korean before and we finally found a Asian market but it takes 2 hours to get there but i'm so happy i'm getting the ingredients from your videos yummy yummy i can taste it now!!

  • Hey! I am planning on making this for my friends when they come home from college on Wednesday. I found a red pepper paste at my grocery store... will that be okay to use? Or should I get the actual chili pepper paste?

  • @TeraCMusic It's called gochujang (Korean hot pepper paste). Check out the photo of gochujang on my website please.

  • @Maangchi okay thanks! It looks like I bought the right one :D Cannot wait to try it!

  • and is it ok to add ramen for personal preference?

  • foodgasm...

  • @Maangchi i bought umm sliced korean rice cakes .. the one u used for making soup.. umm is it ok if i use that to make dukbokki? if i can, how much cups of water do i need ?

  • Mmm...I am hungry all of a sudden. going to make me a snack. I love Hot and Spicy food. Im Mexican...it is in my blood. I eat whole Habanero Peppers for breakfast followed by 2 slices Itallian bread with salt sprinkled on them.

  • oh wow thank you but i got one Q : if i didn't pot the anchovies is the taste gonna change or not? in another way do i have to pot it?

  • @2PMArabHottest Use chicken or beef broth. It will be delicious.

  • @Maangchi ok thank you so much ^^

  • @Maangchi umm excuse me i can not eat fish so can you please make a video where you make this with beef or is it okay for me to not put any thing because i dont know if anything will change if i dont put anything in it does the taste change?

  • @KpopObsessionGirl

Well if you can't eat fish or your allergic to it what you can use is a bit of broth/stock to suit your need. Just know it might taste a bit watery. So try using a bit more stock or just plain out starting with a stock and cooking it down.

Just don't start with a weak stock it has to be something flavorful so you can taste it.

  • what is the name of the song maangchi?

  • @mootsiee The song is DJ DOC's "shindangdong ddukbokkie" : )

  • is it ok to subsitute fish sauce for the anchovies?

  • @shadowkiss09 no, the reason I use anchovies is to make the broth delicious. Use a can of chicken broth if dried anchovies are not available. Good luck!

  • @Maangchi just wanna ask, does ddukbokkie taste really spicy and hard to chew on? because i can find it in singapore and most of them are hard to chew on

  • @hottiebling i think most of our food's kinda spicy cuz of '고추장(something pepper source)'

    >.< i'm accustomed to it so it's Okay for me but i've heard some foreigners just cannot it

  • wat happen if u r a vegetarian so can i skip the fish. Or is there anything i can use like beef i would mostly want it to be vegetarian since my sis is a vegeterian thnx reply asap plzz i want to make it for this special event

  • @KpopObsessionGirl when my mom makes this she only uses the rice cake xD

  • Wasting so much money to buy all the ingredient .. I rather go and buy at the korea food store for only $3 only...

  • i really2 wanted to try it!!!!

  • its good i was try it but i dont eat coz i dont like spicy snack :(

  • gumayo for the tutoria;; .. ermm u know wen wait for the rice cake to be soft .. how long do u have to wait ? o.o

  • woah you made it so easy... others make it complicated ... thanks unnie

  • I'm not a good cook, so I think I will eat this dish out at a korean restaurant!!!! :)

  • @kellyache74 yes, after trying it out, if you really like it, make it. It's very easy to make. : )

  • will the rice cake turn hard fast?

mine was like very very hard....=.=

  • what if I don't use the anchovy?? will the taste still be the same??

  • I think it will not be very different but anchovy and kelp are the most frequently used ingredients in Korean food, especially when you make any stock or soup. :) If you don't like anchovy or don't have anchovy, I would like to recommend the fish cake (Eomuk in korean market or Odeng in Japanese market) for ddeokbokgi soup instead. It's very good. I'm not very good at English. Sorry about that. =) I hope you can understand what I mean.Thank u for being interested in Korean food. God bless you.

  • what can u do so that the ddukbokki isnt spicy and can i cut the rice cakes in hals?

  • Sup guys , just asking but is the rice cakes suppose to be hard and chewy when eaten ? or soft ? Thanks in advance ! :D

  • @XiaoLongBao5 It should be soft and a little chewy. Keep cooking until it gets soft.

  • @Maangchi thanks alot !!~~~ ;DD

  • i thought the song was weird until i realised.. is the song about dukbokki??

  • @barbiedoll87 indeed! lol

  • Amazon sells the pepper paste.

  • What is the brand name of the hot pepper paste?

  • @vivalabeavaaa I don't remember which brand I used for this spicy rice cake. Check out the photo of hot pepper paste on my website (ingredient section) if you want.

  • can you please tell me how many people this serves,

    Thanks

  • @kissmeblackjack for 3-4 servings.

  • I love your cooking unnie i tried the kimchi and it was great now i want to make the Ddukbokki but I can't get the pepper paste is there any recipe so i can make it at home cause i'm in Egypt and i can't find it here anywhere

  • LOOKS SOOO GOOD! I WILL MAKE THIS, THIS WEEKEND! hopefully it will taste as good as my halmoni's always tasted!

  • Maangchi, I tried making this but when it was done, some rice cakes were hard and some were hard? what could possibly go wrong? are the rice cakes suppose to be thawed out completely?

  • @missysea08 No problem! Cook longer until the rice cake get soft. You may need to add more water.

  • @Maangchi i meant to say some were hard and some were soft. i tried adding more water and it end up killing the taste. maybe something went wrong. but i'll try cooking it again. thanks =]

  • @missysea08

If you bought the rice cakes in the frozen package then that means it was processed at factory, not that it's bad or anything but you need more time to "soften" it. Separate your rice cakes in individual pieces and submerge it in large bowl of water for few hours before you start cooking.

  • @maangnchi.. i have a problem here.. i can't find rice cake here.. is there anything that i can substitute it?

  • @manusiabermulut If you go to AerisKitchen she has a recipe to make homemade ones....She has a youtube and wesite (with a free ecookbook.. Her recipes are awesome :) youtu.be /0MhvEouOKDU (take out the space)

  • this is easy..but i cant eat anchovy..so i substitute it with chicken :)

  • Hi, is it possible to use smaller dried anchovies? And if so, how do you estimate I should put in? Thank you

  • is it okay if i use anchovie/seafood soup base instead of dried anchovies? Should i soak rice cakes if they are a bit hard from being in the fridge?

  • Do we need dried anchovies? I'm not able to eat any seafood/fish product so can I substitute it?

  • @MeldinaPehlic Use chicken broth then. The broth should be delicious to make good ddukbokki.

  • @Maangchi Thank you ^^

  • hey guys. The song in this video is about Dukbokki!

    "Hurricane Park" by DJ D.O.C.

As Korean I laughed right after I recognized this song. It is so famous in Korea.

    The song says:

A man had a date with a lady at a Dukbokki restaurant.

He used all the remaining money to have Dukbokki with her.

However she was just staring at the guy in the DJ box. (in the pas,t hmm 80s?, some famous Dubokki restaurants hired DJs to play music for guests)

Name of DJ was "Hurricane Park" - Prince Charming Lol

  • the recipe seems easy enough... i might try this one. can i omit the sugar or half the amount? the amount of sugar seems scary...

  • OMG, ASIAN COOKING IS JUST THE BEST!

  • Hello...I'm from Malaysia...i wanna try this recipe but can anyone tell me where can i get all the ingredients in Malaysia?any supermarkets?

    tq... :)

  • @Maangchi i just boght ddobukki and chilli paste at JJ wangsa maju.

  • @ryejahat Great! I'm happy for you! Is the store one of stores listed on my website? If not, it would be awesome if you submit info about the grocery store: address, phone number...on my website.

Sometimes people can't make a Korean dish because they don't know where to find a Korean grocery store. Check out Korean grocery store section on my website and fill out info about the store if you want. Many people will appreciate it! Happy cooking!

  • @FLAVAminoz cold storage? I got mine in cold storage :D

  • @FLAVAminoz i just bought the ddobukki and chilli paste at JJ wangsa maju X)

  • This is so good I only have it twice a year or else I would gain so much weight. When you bit into the dough it's so soft it melts in you mouth and the sauce is so good before you know it its done.

  • i can't believe thin earlier sauce will be that thick o 0 o look delicious!!

  • hey maangchi!!! reeellee love your recipes! but i cant find the hot pepper paste any wer! i wana kno if ther is any substitute 4 it??? ive been craving 4 tteobokki since few days nw!

  • @jusanamateur oh no. hot pepper paste is a very important ingredient for this recipe but you can make mild version. Check out the mild version recipe on my website please.

  • Not to be mean or anything, isn't the rice cake too long ? Just saying since I'm used to little ones

  • Is it alright if I don't take out the intestines of the dried anchovies and whatever else I need to take out?

  • I made this and it's so delicious!!! :)

  • Maangchi you make the BEST FOOD IN THE WORLD!
