  • Everyone forgets what an awesome and landmark scene this is.

  • WELL DONE

  • at that time in history very few states and countries allowed women to vote. most women didn't hold jobs outside the home, except for the secretaries, shopkeepers, or factory workers. Men back then believed themselves to masters of the universe.

  • Anyone else realise that Mrs Banks is clearly a witch at 1:18.. clearly made the woman go instantly quiet

  • i love the cooks!

    theyre so funny :L

  • I Don't Know This Song.

  • If she's pushing for equality, why isn't she wearing a banner that says "Conscription for Women"?

  • @loqutor

??? I thought it said "vote for women"????

  • @ballarinoula95 It does. What they don't tell you is that the police who were arresting the suffragettes couldn't vote, either.

  • @loqutor

    -.-

  • It is forgotten that many men did not have the vote either. Some facts:-

Reform Act 1832:- Resulted in 15% of males having the vote.

Representation of the People Act 1884:- Increased suffrage but still 40% of males still could not vote.

Representation of the People Act 1918:- Universal suffrage for males over 21 females over 30.

Representation of the People Act 1928 - Universal suffrage all over 21.

In photos the policemen arresting the suffragettes did not have the vote either.

  • @ZimbaZumba Thank you! I never heard of that and it is a very interesting fact.

  • Now that I'm older and understand this song, I LOL'd when I heard,

"But we agree that as a group they're rather stupid..." XDDDDD

  • WOMANKIND ARISE!

  • If I ever get married, I'm going to sing this to my husband when he gets too upity. XD

  • @Yermog You mean when he has the audacity to disagree with you? Yes, how dare men not kowtow to women constantly!

  • @loqutor It was a joke, in case you couldn't tell from the emoticon.

  • @Yermog Just recognize that you're actually allowed to make the joke. If I said I would sing "A Hymn to Him" to my wife whenever she got uppity, I'd get lynched twice.

  • @loqutor You are, of course, allowed to make any joke you want (I'm assuming you know "A Hymn to Him" is meant to poke fun at men who don't understand women). If your wife doesn't like it, that's an issue between you and her. If you're afraid others will shut you up, it's probably because you know that women have a long history of being oppressed by males. But go ahead make any joke you want. No one will stop you. If it's in the right spirit, you may even get some laughs.

  • @Ih8bureaucracy Being oppressed by males? That is so much horseshit. It was a majority of men (and ONLY men) who granted women the right to vote. At the time this movie takes place, only 5% of men were allowed to vote.

The idea that men have been oppressing women is toxic, hateful, rabble-rousing, and completely untrue. I can't tolerate anybody spreading around such vitriol. It's resulted in sexual harassment laws, which have destroyed the lives of countless innocent men.

  • "we agree that as a group they're raaather stuuupid" XD

  • @KiroToru You're sexist.

  • @loqutor this comment... accompanied by a picture of Damon Gant........... feels so right

  • @KiroToru You're getting away with saying such things. Imagine the outcry if a man said something similar about women.

  • Lol, i had no idea what the suffregets were until now.. they made women get vote!:)

  • @spishspashsposh The word "suffrage" means the right to vote. :)

  • this part was cut out of the movie when it entered the usa cinema's i saw that somewhere ones in a docu it's just as they say as a group their rather stupid.

    XD

    Greetings

    Sindrassa

  • 1:29 XDDD Just shows how lenient society has become since then.

  • This is one of my favorite songs in this musical, even though Julie Andrews doesn't sing it. I just love it!

  • I've always loved the crazy mum in Mary Poppins.

  • i never knew she was the suffregets, only learnt about em now i know:)

  • @loqutor ............DRYYYYY

  • I have to play Mrs Banks in a parade this month!!! Im going to my drama class to lines tonight!!!

  • To all the people remarking negatively about Mrs. Bank's comment on men being stupid--at that time, when women were not allowed to vote I too would think that men were being rather stupid for not letting women vote. This is a great movie and Mrs. Banks is a fun, and also a realistic blast from the past to all of us who watch it now.

  • @HowlingMonki It was a majority of men (and only men) who granted women the right to vote.

    Your argument is invalid.

  • @loqutor I admit that I did not explain myself very well, so I will give you that, however I meant to say more in detail that it is foolish of any person to deny any particular gender the right to vote (or anything else for that mattter). I praised Mrs. Banks for saying what she said because in my mind she was saying it was stupid of men to deny them the right to vote. And frankly, I think she is right. All men are not stupid and I apologize if that is what you thought I was implying. :)

  • @HowlingMonki Men as a whole couldn't vote until 1882.

  • @loqutor If you are talking about how in the beginning only men who owned property could vote, then it can be reasoned that the men who denied those men who did not own property the right to vote extremely foolish in terms of equality. The point I was making was merely it is foolish in generally for anyone to deny anyone the right to vote. Can we stop this and just focus on Mary Poppins being a good movie? :)

  • I love Glynis Johns in this. She's all, HEY! I was singing here!!!!!

  • I like how it ends with her just like, "what do you god damn want, bitch?"

  • "Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid." Just goes to show that feminism has preached contempt for men from the get-go.

Mrs. Banks is the quintessential feminist: She only loves her husband insofar as he is useful to her, and she describes herself as oppressed when she has far more privilege than nearly any man in England. She enjoys all the benefits of her husband's wealth without having to do any work, even traditionally "feminine" work.

  • @loqutor Stupid bitter man.

  • @MrsJellyCat Silly feminist. Being bitter doesn't make somebody wrong.

  • @loqutor Well she doesn't have the right to vote, work if she wants to, the right to do anything but care for children, she isn't allowed a formal education, she really is submerged into her husband's identity. And feminism and suffrage must be seperated, suffrage is a more militant version fo feminism because they wanted the right to vote and really they had to go to extremes for that, feminism is usually moderate.

  • @Abridgedfan134 Let's see: she doesn't need to vote since her husband's vote will meet her interests, she doesn't need to work because of her husband's income, and she keeps hiring nannies to care for her children. Yes, I'd say she's extremely privileged.

  • @loqutor Oh privileged yes, that's why she has the time to go those meetings, lower class women of this time had to work constantly to just keep up and had an even worse situation. And no one votes according to other peoples interests, thats why we need universal right to vote, women too. Women were not represented by the votes of men, that's why they campaigned to have votes. She does something she believes in and I don't think she loves her husband or her children any less for it.

  • We listened to this song in our GCSE history class today. ='D

  • i see that a lot of people here are arguing that women have equal rights with men or not...well to tell you the truth they don't...especially where i live!!and i'm a staunch feminist!people all around me consider women nothing...just think they are born for cooking food, cleaning blah blah...fuck it!!!nearly all of the girls in my class don't even know what feminism is!!!i wanna cry to women WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!!its all messed up!btw i always luved this movie n still do n i'm 17.

  • @TheFireflies1000 Key term there is where you live. Women have more than equal rights in the West. In fact, they have far more rights than men. I'd hardly say women are oppressed when you can get a man fired from his job just for looking at you the wrong way.

  • "Take heart, for Mrs. Pankhurst has been clapped in irons again!"

A line dedicated to the great feminist Emmeline Pankhurst. :)

  • @WildWildWest30000 Never heard of her.

    ZING!!!

  • We are listened to this song today in history about women not aloud to vote back then !!!!

  • i have this soundtrack on vinyl, and me and my friend march around the house to it.

  • I hated this song when I saw this as a kid. Now it's probably my favorite in the whole movie.

  • For many years, I've almost forgotten this song!

  • Mrs. Banks always made me smile. She's such a fun little bird! She's so excited about womens rights but won't raise a word against her husband. Its interesting (if not a little sad), and besides, this song is just plain fun! :) Love Mary Poppins.

  • Votes for women is less than 100 years old.

  • WELL DONE !!!!!! SISTER SUFFRAGETTE !!!!!!

  • @erindeluca I did, I told you one, the part about I can't get a job on my field because those are given mostly to men? No good enough for you? Also, my case it's hard from unheard of, I have a friend working directly in the job bussiness that tells me that this discrimination it's rampant, bussiness ASK THEM to hire men, not women. And I'm not your school teacher, you have internet so I asume you can google stuff, right? I don't have to tell you anything when you are obviously ignoring my words.

  • @erindeluca I vote, I have a dregree in mining engineering, but I don't have a job in that field because there are very few positions and men have preference, it's not a secret for anyone. I know my rights, and I fight for those that I still don't have. But you are showing your ignorance all over the place, again, please, go inform yourself about how "equality" really works and why we don't have it.

  • @erindeluca I don't think equality means what you think it means, it has nothing to do with being "criticized". Please, again, inform yourself or I'll ignore you.

  • @erindeluca we don't have equality, not even close. Inform yourself.

  • She was right...their granddaughters and great granddaughters are singing in grateful chorus the song they learned as kids.

  • um, it says sign not sing

  • This is my favourite :)

  • Voting in the UK is a complex piece of history of a developing democracy that affected men as well. ie :-

Reform Act 1832:- Resulted in 15% males having the vote.

Representation of the People Act 1884:- Still 40% of males did not have the vote.

Representation of the People Act 1918:- Votes for males over 21, females over 30.

Representation of the People Act 1928 - Votes for all over 21.

    see wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Suffrage

  • One day when we have a real woman presidential candidate, this needs to be her theme song! It's so empowering! We need more women like these women nowadays. Proud to be women and yet not so proud as to belittle men completely! EQUALITY!

  • @erindeluca agreed for example behind every storng soldier there is an even stronger women

  • Ann Coulter despises this woman.

  • those lyrics on the bottom are unnecessary. i've already got the song down

  • So, who exactly is Sister Suffragette?

  • @YukiCookie07 I dont know!

  • ...and so far we were able to semi-defeat racism in the world by having a black president...but still women don't seem to be making any progress to conquer sexism.

Frig Sarah Palin, you're making us look bad (I'm Ontarian btw)omg this actress is so gorgeous!! -3

  • As a woman i hate to say this... I don't really ever see a woman president (at least not in my time) I feel that society is so used to having a male president and due to how the media portrays 80%-90% of women, we will always be subjected to belittlement and inferiority. Sexism and racism have been around for ages...

  • @nddlj i agree with you, i dont think we will never get equality

  • These were true feminists! They didn't hate men they just wanted equality unlike the men hating idiots now!

  • @erindeluca read the whitehouse report on the status on women. Women are only making 75% of what men are even though they are more highly educated, that is hardly equity.

  • "although we adore men individually, we agree that as a group, they're rather stuuupid."

    bahahaha

  • @erindeluca If only everyone in the history of the world could have that view. The people in power always want power and they make the rest suffer as long as they can achieve their power. I doubt it will ever be anything different. Women always had to stay at home and bear children while men could go out and work, fight and provide, therefore owning all the rights.,

  • I adore and love those women for getting us the rights we have now. My knowledge of the suffragettes and women fighting for their rights is quite awful. I am defo going to find out more about these people who fought and campaigned for womes rights (men too especially when it comes to different social classes). We take our rights for granted these days. People suffered and died to give us in the future these rights. We owe them everything. They should never be forgotton.

  • didn't realise you sign in grateful chorus.

    grand song though.

  • @erindeluca are you delusional? You think that woking in child care is not labour intensive? How abour nursing? is that a walk in the park? People pay zoo keepers more than they do to look after their children. Women get looked over for jobs because there is a chance that they might decide to give birth and then their employers have to pay mat leave. You can say that women choose to start a family, they don't have to, but if women don't have children who will? Get your head out your ass!

  • @erindeluca you honestly think we have equality?

Have you looked at salaries of women dominated jobs compared to mens'?

Have you noticed that when a woman politician gets on stage they don't care to what she is saying, only who she is wearing?

Are women equilly represented in parliament?

Don't be deluded, there is still so much to do.

  • You know, the uffragettes don't get nearly as much credit.

My great-great aunt was arrested for breaking widows in Salisbury in 1911, and she poured ink through pillarboxes. I have to say I am proud to be related to someone who helped make such a difference!

  • Now that I'm older, I appreciate this movie so much more. I can notice themes like women's suffrage and Mr. Banks struggle with businessman and fatherhood.

Makes me love it so much more <3

  • 2:05

Hmm, the one on the right seems into it, but I think lefty is only in it for the money.

  • when I was little I wanted to be Mary Poppins, but now maybe I prefer Mrs Banks! that's a women! now I realize what that song is about! ^^

  • I always wanted Mrs. Banks as a mother.

  • "our daughter's daughters will adore us, and they'll sing in grateful chous, well done sister suffragettes!" makes me quite sad. I wish the majority DID appreciate what both men and women did to secure a democratic vote for everyone. Can I genuinely say, well done sister suffragettes and thank you to everyone who has fought and in some cases died to secure democracy and the vote for us all. Great video, and great film :D

  • this song is totally epic =D

  • Thank you for the sing-along version !

  • @erindeluca What do we need men for? The greatest threat to humanity is not nuclear bombs or guns it's TESToOSTERONE duh duh Duuhhh!

  • Comment removed

  • Didn't have a clue what they were singin about until history last year thank sir teachin me about this made me lol a lot XD

  • Yeah people, it's amazing.

Get over the whole sexism thing.

  • Oh come ON you guys, lighten up! Whats not to like about Mary Poppins - best film ever made! And I dont want to hear a word against Dick Van Dykes cockney accent! (shtep in toime!)

  • Now that we've got the men vs. women argument out of the way, let's discuss how the scene neatly tries to glaze over the class issue of women's suffrage by flattening the differences in these women's social reality :o)

  • When I was younger I didn't really understand what they were singing about but I loved the song lol Still do and always will!!! :D

Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid. XD

  • @halfbreeddemon Though I adore women individually, I believe that as a group they're quite insane.

See? I can do it, too. But, unlike you, I get in trouble for criticizing the opposite sex.

  • @loqutor Hmm... It didn't match the rhythm very well lol And nobody was criticizing anyone. Except for Mrs Banks lol

  • Has anyone noticed that the words appearing has a continuing typo?

  • thank god for women like mrs banks!

    though we ador men individualy

we agree that as a group they're rather stupid!

    best. lyrics. EVAR!

  • i'm glad we're not treated the EXACT same. they hold the door for me, buy me stuff.. and turn off the lights i leave on. also they give me massages whenever i say :)

  • I love this song. It bored me as a kid, but now it's my favorite.... after Stay Awake, which became my lullabye to my son. :) Thank you, Sister Suffragettes!!

  • @erindeluca In many parts of the world, women are still treated as second-class citizens. I'd hardly call that equality.

  • @erindeluca Ah if ONLY more people thought like you :')

  • @erindeluca well said. except we can always work towards more equality in areas of life that lack.

  • where are all the good protests? tea party is the only option. ...ugh.

i may play along if they sang good songs like this

  • don't let them talk, best way to stop a rebellion

  • how can people not like this song

  • @erindeluca THANK YOU!!! No more Feminism and Patriarchy, equality for all!!

  • The woman who plays Catey Nana is the same woman who played Bride of Frankenstein. I always KNEW she looked familiar but didn't connect the two. Wow.

  • @erindeluca

We got equality? And that would be since? Women still earn less than men! Men are still more "worth" than women....just look at the image traditional "womens professions" have. We're far from being equal!

  • this song was in my head all day for some reason so I had to listen to it before I went to bed! Gotta love mary poppins!!

  • "Our daughters daughters will adore us and they'll sing in grateful chorus......WELL DONE, SISTER SUFFRAGETTE!" Truly adore this movie!!

  • VOTE ON NOVEMBER 2 !

  • i lve ellen...she's soooo darn funny in the movie...

  • It made me laugh whoever said 'I like the mother's voice in the French Version, it's deeper than in the English version" - since when has the English been a 'version'? It's the original, baby! :)

  • I had no idea what this song was about when I was little. But I remember loving the song and watching the part where she lifts her skirt and one of them scream over and over again. I just thought it was so funny XD

  • @Tears222 ...Hopefully now everyone knows what the song is about! :) Yes that part was sooo funny! :-D

  • lol i'm going to use this in my presentation i'm doing about feminism in Britian during the 20th century.

  • wen u think about it, it makes me quite mad

    all that torture,

    women tying themselves to posts,

    being force fed brutally,

jumping in front of horse carriges risking there own lives....

for girls to go around now and say "WOW SHOOESS!!"

  • @leedonaldt you're an idiot. Not only do you rely on a hackneyed stereotype, but I don't see how having the right to vote is in anyway negated by liking shoes.

  • @jxthree im not saying all girls do say that

i just saying SOME girls of today dont appreciate wat they've done for us

(and i was just using shoes as an example!!!!)

  • @leedonaldt I was too harsh & I apologise for that. But I still dont see why women/girls should forever have to be appreciative for finally being treated as fully human in the eyes of the law.Of course, some women suffered greatly to get us here, but rather than simply being grateful,we should have the right to act like utter fools if we so wish,in the same way a great number of men and boys do,with no one admonishing them for showing insufficient respect to those who gave them the right to vote

  • @jxthree i agree definitely

    and apology accepted

it is a free country and all that

just saying we should pay a lil bit more attention to the past

    thats all.

  • All these songs were written by the Sherman Brothers. Along with other particular Disney Songs.

  • totally quoting this as a source for my history coursework. AHHH... CLASSIC :')

  • this reminds me of an even steven's episode

  • @erindeluca not to mention women carry the babies

  • is the woman who sang this dead?

  • @bh5496 only 3 people who starred in this are still alive today haha

  • @ScreenFlavour Julies still alive i know that for sure :D

  • @ThePaopuFruitLover actually i thought id do a little research (coz im sad haha) the only ones alive now are julie andrews, dick van dyke, karen dotrice (jane), glynis johns (mother) and mr dawes jr (the actor played older characters)

  • @ScreenFlavour so the guy who played the little boy is dead?

  • @bh5496 yeh he died aged 21- hepititus due to eating bad meat apparently even though some thought it was drugs.

  • Well done, sister Suffragette!

  • i had no idea what this lady was talking about when i was 6 but i loved the song

  • @shorts You shouldn't say that, Rush Limbaugh will reign down on you with a rain of ruin and claim you're a victim of liberal propaganda.

  • Comment removed

  • I watched this in History one time cause we were learning about the Suffragetes.

  • when I was little I thought she said "stupily" instead of stupid

  • When I was a little kid of about 9 years old, I could barely understand what the Mom was singing, she had such a thick accent. Thanks for the words.

  • i love this movie!

  • The world needs men and the world needs women, otherwise one of us wouldn't be here. So SHUT UP and stop spoiling this good song.

  • @stargazinboi If I wish to comment on any video I will do so I suggest You Shut Up

  • @Stheno490BC Comment on a politically based video with your illogical nonsense. Not on a harmless Disney film.

  • @stargazinboi I have the right to comment on any video I choose as do you so get over it

  • bloody women

  • Can we just enjoy a good ol' musical and say that yeah, the mom is pretty freaking awesome, even if you don't agree with her views? Cause her voice is really nice to listen to, and this song is very catchy.

  • I'm going to adapt these lyrics for the Gay Marriage/Anti-Prop 8 cause!

  • Love this song.

  • Hello AlexValve. it's actually "sing" and not "sign" :-)

  • Whenever I see this part of the movie I immediently think of Superstar with Molly Shannon because the mother played the grandmother in it. She hasnt seemed to age at all! Shes beautiful!

  • Woww, I haven't seen this movie in so long.

I keep forgetting how much I love it!

Lol, the maid with the red hair cracks me up. When she's singing along at the end, her face is priceless!

  • It's just occurred to me that this entire clip brings Kanye West to mind. "I'm real happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, but Women's Suffrage is the greatest probelm of all time!"

    =^..^=

  • What is it Katie Nana! haha yeah I be mad if she kept interrupting my song too!

  • @cfadgin Hmm, well men clearly aren't good at spelling. "As a group they're rather stupid". You've surpassed this song, dear cfadgin. You're stupid all by yourself.

  • I love how Mrs Banks flashes her bloomers and they are all so shocked:) Imagine if people from that time were alive today, they'd be shocked at the leg showing

  • @Sassyscottishlassy heck, forget about today. In just 10 years' time women's hemlines rose to the knee. This movie takes place in 1910 and by 1920 women had discarded the corset, risen their skirts, and bobbed their hair.

  • when mrs banks cuts katie nana's gibberings off at 1:20!

  • Comment removed

  • @PeterGKilligrew i got sound. have you got speakers on? volume up?

  • I love this song too!!! In english it's really better than in the italian translation! Thank you for the lyrics! =)

  • I always loved this song. :) Good job getting all the lyrics!

  • rights with children over fathers. I am by no means suggesting there are not areas were women don't suffer discrimation as well but in the context of the United Kingdom, I think it is rediculous for you to pretend that men live in some of paradise and women in some sort of hell. Feminists have demonstrated time and again they are motivated by power and not equality. If you truly cared about equality you would speak up on the occasionally unfair treatment of men, instead you make excuses for it.
