The gay bars sound like they suck. The prices sound very steep. Does the cost of living over there mirror the average wage? I wonder how well a white boy like myself would do over there.
Tokyo is probably a bit on the expensive side, but anywhere else and you'd be fine. Just come here on an English-teaching job (which is one of the only reliable ways for a foreigner to stay here, unless you're a student) and you'll have no problems. =)
I was always wondering, what constitutes a foreigner for these clubs? Like if you are Japanese in heritage but not fluent in Japanese? Or is it like... non-asian? Are Caucasians, Africans, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, etc. all lumped together? What if you are mixed?
Well teeeeechnically "gaijin" refers to anyone who's not Japanese (if you're of Japanese-heritage you're still considered Japanese...and believe it or not there are still people who will express disbelief that you can't speak Japanese!). But in general, when Japanese people hear the word "gaijin" they probably imagine someone who's non-Asian.
If you're mixed race Japanese +something else then you're an entirely different category: "Half." On the other hand, if you're...say....Black + Latino, then you're still just a "gaijIn" as far as most Japanese people are concerned.
But you know, drag clubs are sometimes considered as being seperate from gay clubs. Like, drag clubs tend to cater to straight people who want to experience something "exotic," almost like a sideshow.
Of course, gay bars tend to....well...gays... And although they may have their fair share of drag shows too, the primary focus is on meeting other (usually non-drag) gays!
Good luck on the move. Is the new place smaller? Your current place seems like it's a pretty decent size and I've heard some stories about Tokyo housing being rather small.
well it depends on the bar...some places are more sane about it =P
Yeah my Tokyo place is gonna be way smaller! And about $200 more expensive every month =( That's what it takes to make it in the big city, I suppose...

When I danced in Japan, I stayed in the Roppongi area of Tokyo (Hotel Ibis), and we wondered into a bar which turned out to be a drag club lol,
I remember all these guys dressed in Kimono with fans. I also remembered that my drink, a screw driver, cost about 15.00.
I was too busy working nights to really go out to the gay section, so that was my one and only bar experience.

Ooh, I've never actually been to Roppongi!
