The Harrier was never a good aircraft really. It was designed during the Cold War, for use after all our runways got bombed, but nothing would have been left if that had ever kicked off anyway. They did make carrier flying cheaper but they were slow. I guess nostalgists will argue with me but compare a Harrier with a Typhoon.

To me the millitary should be the LAST place to make cuts. Did you see recantly about the russian naval fleet just outside uk waters? Now imagine if there intensions were bad. We only had HMS york to send to see what was going on. A russian fleet would of sank her within seconds. Hardly any air support eigher. If anything we need to invest more in armed forces. Because you just never know.

Italians have just lanced the new carrier Cavour with inside 20 iMcDonnell Douglas-BAe AV-8B Harrier II and 4 more carriers are in building for the new F35 will be built in italy

This news is Disappointing. I am pakistani but this plane was my dream plane. The only Mature VTOL platform is retired now. This aircraft have no match in beauty and VTOL performance

Ok, first the Aussies replace their 37 year old aircraft with a 20 year old one..now the Brits have replaced their aircraft...with one that doesnt exist yet (F-35)...what is it with commonwealth nations failing at having an airforce?
@DaytonaRoadster Aussies have replaced there aging F111 with new Super Hornets until we get the new F-35, But its a very bad move retiring the Harrier and very sad.
@showaltermicro The F35 Joint Strike Fighter is the planned replacement but not due in service till 2019 at the earliest, and thats if there are no more delays in its development, so nothing in service for at least 8 years which means the Royal Navy is unable to provide its own air cover, therefore reliant on land based air or US Navy aircraft.
