I was but a very young sailor visiting the West Indies between 1960 / 61 such memories, Oh! if I had known then what I know now, such happy happy memories from all of those wonderful West Indian islands.
This is one of my mom's favoutite songs... one of mine too :') I'm 16 and my friends don't even know who he is which REALLY sucks... they could learn a thing or two about music from this song!
This song takes me back when I was a small boy, My mom played this song on this same album. I love this album and this brings back great memories, Thank you so much for posting this, God bless you... Harry Belafonte is one of my favorite artists.
when I was four my parents taught me to sing this song to impress friends,my parents are long gone, and in the blink of an eye I will be in my 60's,still gives me chills up my spine when i hear it,and I truly could listen to it over and over and over..could use a place where the sun shines daily ;)
Many years ago before we had a TV in our house, radio was the only form of entertainment in the family home. The pureness of the music & songs came through & one could just close their eye's & believe that they had been magically transported to that place that was being sung about . Harry Belafonte was a master of taking you there. Just listening to some of his songs tonight not only reminded me of his tender voice but of his & other performers of that era. Thank you Harry for those memories.
when i was a little girl and my dad had to leave us and travel overseas for work, he would hug us and sing this song over and over again. miss u daddy, i love you
This song played loud through the windows of our home though l grew up in Africa l always felt l was in the Carribean. For my late father John Mabiza snr MYSRIP
guys like me who travelled a lot and finally settled in a different country, this song brings sweet old memories of motherland (in my case-India), the little joys of childhood with parents (none of them is there anymore), memories of old friends who are long lost and that long cherished but often forgotten environment of my little home- this song takes me on a ride to the past which now exists only in dreams..
though this album is 10 yrs older than me...I grew up on it as my Mother played it all the time.......I love every song but this is by far my favorite.
oh what a voice.. I remember this song being played again and again on the local radio when the west Indies cricket team toured India sometime during the 70's..brings back great memories
oh my gosh!!! i finally found this songgggggggg........ my father used to sing this to us when he put us to sleep.... he repeat this again and again until we finally went to sleep.... and until now he still sing this song to us and we sing together... with my bros and sis... put tears in my eyes...
This song reminds me the day in my younger days, when i wished to to become father of a daughter.Thank god i am proud father of of two daughters today with out whom i really can not live for a second a day even.So i am not going to jamaica or any place on the earth ever with out them.
@Amitabhify Thats so wonderful!...God bless you and your two lovely daughters...Im a daughter of Jamaica and I hope that one day you will visit my lovely country with your children.
I bought this record new when originally released. I loved Mr.Belafonte's voice. I hear now that this RCA Living Stereo pressing was one of the best recordings of their archives. Americans don't listen to stuff like this any more, nor do they record such songs. (at least for the mainstream musical ear). Old recordings either on LP's or 2-track tape are worth collecting!
Oh God,,,I'm soon leaving Jamaica for good,,being here for three years,,It's a wonderful experience,,, sad and happy memories,, remembering them makes my heart tearing apart. Thank you Jamaica,,,
Oh MY GOd, what a voice!!! An island air which wide opens the doors of hope whenever I'm sad. Mr Belafonte is a great Human Being who has a gifted voice.. Beyond the singer, I like the MAN, his struggle for Freedom and to enhance the std of living of the poor. Regards our dear Harry.
often times its not an issue of want its an issue of rights, normaly years after something is made the rights are divided up between family members and record companies
I have this on two Harry Belafonte CDs. I assume that his hits and this song are still readily available on Amazon and Ebay, which contain several other outstanding songs.
When ever i am away from my two sweet daughters even for more than a day.I start feeling the same way the sailors feel when while starting their journey for another destination leaving their loved one back home.
Hats off to the great harry for giving so much soul to this traditional song
my grade four teacher strums this song on her guitar and sang it for us, first time I was hearing it. I was 8 then. I'm now 43. loved it so much then, still do!!!

Why don´t the record companies burn a CD of this record, as I believe that there are many people who will buy it.
It IS and WILL always be a classical.
Come on, companies, don´t squander a unique opportunity as there are nostalgic people.
