Although the SL-1 experimental power reactor project in Idaho was not a civilian operation, in 1961 it experienced an explosive supercritical accident resulting in three deaths. SL-1 was a live test of a unit intended to power remote military outposts.
There was a 1/4" plate steel containment building, far less than the massive concrete structures surrounding all present-day power reactors.
Some see it as another argument against, or like myself, as a lesson to help us harness the source!
