  • Not a bad axe, but given that BILLY-BO hanging there, it's no wonder

    you're selling it!

  • Too much Bright :S

    Sorry

  • u need to get a girlfriend ehhehee

  • I want that room and all its treasures!

  • Woah, loving the Stevie Ray Vaughan, really really nice. How much do these second hand models tend to go for?

  • love your collection..thats all you need..a es 335, a les paul, a firebird, a sg, a strat and a gretsch i think^^

  • I bet that JM Strat gets pretty scared when it's up on the wall with those other guitars!

  • do you use a pick because I seem to notice you using one? just wondering as I am currently having a debate inside my head about switching to fingers like mayer and vaughn but i am just so used to a pick.

  • Ahh! I want that white Firebird you have!

  • what other kind of strats do you have for sale ?

  • this one sound pretty thin

or is it 'cause of the amp or the player?

    peace

  • The best factory guitar out to date!!! John Mayer has great taste and a great ear!!! Even if he is a "sap"!!

  • Nice demo. Two questions: What kind of tube screamer were you using, and... Where did you find tabs for "Who Did You Think I Was" or did you just learn it by ear?

  • @timijai22 I have two TS-9's. One is an original '82 that's unmodified except for a replacement switch. The other is from around 2005 that was from Analog and has the 808 and brown mods.

As for the tab to that tune, I just picked it up by ear. It's in A and there's a little F# minor and G's and E's in it. I don't have that silly little run right, but it's close enough to get the point across. Good luck!

  • @fatnecks Sorry, should have also mentioned about the tube screamers, I'm not sure which one this was, but those are the only dirty pedals I have, so it's got to be one of them......

  • Hey man, awesome vid! What kind of strings did you string that bad boy with?

  • @Gipedo Those are likely DR Pure Blues 10's, that's what I use on my Fender stuff.

  • Such a Wonderful Ugly Guitar Player.

  • man, the best review for this guitar. i liked a lot cause i just bought one :P. i had at more than 10 fender strat but this one is the best for me tks.

  • played one today at guitar center in the platinum room. all the amps were gone though. haha. so i played it with no amp. sounded good i guess,

  • What's that guitar second from the right on the wall?

  • It's a Gretsch Billy-Bo. Supposedly it was designed by Bo Diddley and he later gave one to Billy Gibbons and he plays them all the time.

  • @fatnecks do you have a sonic blues strat? nice.....do you have any Mex.? whats your fav strat? i want to buy a squier and change all the stuffs inside and buys some fender and put it on....any recomendation? thx man..nice vid.

  • get what u pay for

  • How much you selling it for?

  • did you sell it??

  • that is such a sexy guitar.

  • Hey is that strat sold?

  • Great playing man ! five stars...

  • I live in the Uk and i bought mine for £1200 but if i were you, don't necessarily buy one of these just buy a standard american strat and buy his pickups when they come out.

  • Comment removed

  • nice collection of guitars dude. Really jealous!

  • Weird, this is my favorite one out of all of his Stratocasters, yet I thought it was the least popular one :P

Is there any chance I could find it for 400-500$ instead of in the 2000's?

  • I really doubt that you'll find one quite that cheap. When I bought that one, I think it was about 1400 or so new. Fender recently shot all their prices through the roof, so they're probably a lot more now.

  • How the heck can an averaage person shell out 2000 to 4000 bucks for a guitar? It's 4 months worth of rent here where I live :S

I recently bought a Fender acoustic guitar and it cost me 200$, so I dunno.

But it's a shame. I ant one, but it's so unimaginably expernsive that I'll just have to settle for an air-stratocaster. Oh well.

  • Well, USA Fenders are very expensive, but if you're lucky, you can find a used MIM Fender Stratocaster for as cheap as $350. Just check your craigslist and kijiji local ads. They're fantastic guitars, in fact I preferred the sound of my Mexican Strat to my American Strat (although the Standard USA strat has better acoustic resonance), and I ended up selling the USA strat.

  • Hope it worked out for you :)

Thing is, I found a new strat here close to where I live with 499$. But I can't find this John Mayer model. I don't even need the sound quality to be the same, just the design.

Besides, I can get a brand new Strat with say 500-700$ with all the trimmings, but a JM custom made Fender costs me over 2000$?! Why are these signature guitars so expensive? I refuse to believe it's just because a famous guitarist has its name associated with it.

  • I miss the USA strat... but I sold it at a profit and I'll end up buying something even better (USA vintage reissue). Artist models are expensive but usually due to the fact that they're USA fender, all USA fenders are overpriced. You should look at the specs before buying, a JM strat is basically a standard USA strat with very nice pickups (you can recreate their sound by cutting mids on your amp). But they're almost $500 if not more expensive. Standard USA Fenders are the cheapest you can get.

  • It's not just about the price. I wanna get the quality in there too. And that's my issue. If I can get a Fender (USA or Mexican(which I hear from everyone are pretty sweet)) that has the quality, that's all that matters. I feel funny about using used ones. That's true with everything.

And it's true that all USA Fenders are overpriced. But even the overpriced ones are within the range of 500-700$ as I said before. Yet a JM one is double that of a standard overpriced Strat, which is weird to me

  • Bud, you won't get a USA strat for less than 750, and even at that price it's a steal, and we're talking about used prices. A new Mexican strat will cost you $550+, a new American strat will cost you $1200+. If you feel funny about using used guitars that's your loss, the used market is awesome and prices are a lot lower, the fender warranty sucks, and people are actually paying tens of thousands for vintage used guitars. People are paying for relics. Do your research.

  • I feel funny, as I said, about using anything used. Maybe except for cars, because I don't care about them :P

But if I can get a new one, I will.

Now, as I said before, I found at Guitar Center a new strat for 499$. I'm not making this up. The only issue I have with it that it doesn't have the design on the wood that the JM has. That's all. And for this reason I'm baffled why a normal Strat may cost me 500 while a JM one double that. That's what's enigmatic to me.

  • Well the one you see is probably a made in Mexico one. So basically the price is lower due to labour cost, reputation (USA is overrated, mexico looked down upon), the fretwork isn't as good on MIM strats, they have cheaper asian tuners (which aren't bad), cheap tremolo block (not a steel one), cheaper pickups (I happen to love them, they're nice and soft sounding, at least mine are), cheaper wood usually and the body is made from usually more pieces of wood.

  • With Fender, if quality goes up 10%, the price goes up 50%, lol. Not an accurate statistic but you know what I mean, The USA guitars are better quality but a shitload more expensive. That doesn't mean cheaper guitars aren't good, because even Squier bullets can sound nice! Amplifiers have a lot to do with tone too.

  • If you want quality but an affordable price, go for the Squier Classic Vibe guitars. The 60's model looks exactly like this John Mayer sig and it's those guitars are really awesome, at a price of $400 new you can't go wrong, the neck and fretting is done superbly (just check at the store) and the pickups sound great. The 60's model also has an alder body with an S/S/S route, exactly what most people are looking for when it comes to vintage tone.

  • Sweet! This is exactly what I wa slooking for. See, this conversattion could've been cut short long ago, lol.

So, technically, the same exact model I can get with Squier, looks and everything, costs me 400$ while an original JM Fender which looks exactly the same, is 1200$. If the quality I can get for the same exact guitar(almost) is so good to be virtually the same as the original, why is the original triple the price?

  • You can get models in different colours, and colours don't usually represent what model the guitar is or where it is made. So yeah, the 60's Squier CV is SUNBURST with a tortoise shell pickguard, and the JM strats offer this look as well. Not the same model, just the same colour and look, and laquer. The JM will have: a nicer wood grain, fantastic sought after pickups. The Squier CV sounds pretty damn good though, the video is proof.

  • Exactly! I didn't notice almost any difference in the sound quality between his two Squiers and the pricey JM one.

Which is why I intially said that the desparity in the prices is a little rediculous. Sure, it has to be more expernsive. But 3 times as expensive? Gimme a break. Who the hell can afford a 2000$ strat anyway besides people like JM :P

    Thnaks for the help.

Btw, I'm ignorant of everything because I started playing guitar about a week ago. Never have before in my life.

  • who the hell ever said a squier would give you a good sound. a squier version of this guitar would sound 25% as good. just depends what stage of guitar playing ur in and how much you should be spending

  • A Squier can give me a 25% better quality? If that's so why are they soooo much cheaper than Fenders? I hardly ever hear of a famous guitar player that uses Squiers. These are typically used by beginners.

  • naw naw lol read it again. it would be 25% as good? as in like 1/4 as good as a fender. if your just starting out tho its not a bad idea at all

  • 25% as good? Really? So far from all the demos Ive heard here on YT there isn't that big of a difference. It sounds almost the same to me.

  • okay well coming from an experienced guitar player this is what i think. The sound is not even half as good unless you have some thousand dollar amp then maybe i will sound half as good. Moving around the fretboard is more difficult, the sustain is most likely horrible. it doesnt stay in tune for shit. It doesnt LOOK nearly as cool. and ya...basically they make look the same but its the same as getting a 4,000 dollar car and a 40,000 one. if ur a beginner...get it. really.

  • Well after your thorough response I would feel bad buying one :-P

I found very nice Fenders in my local Guitar Center for 499$ so might as well go with it if it's just 200$ more expensive. Not tragic.

Now i said what I said because of this video: /watch?v=1a1m9wrjddo

The guy compares his John Mayer strat to two Squier classic vibes. I honeslty can't hear the difference. Can you?

  • @regelemihai i think you cant hear the difference because you are not in the room. If you were, you would:

    1: hear the difference

2: could try the comfort brought by the neck

3: have better feeling with the high notes

4: have a much more reliable product (i own the squier CV 60 and had to change the electronics)

  • Aha. Thank you, now I'm definitely more inclined to going for a Fender. After all as I said; in my local Guitar Center they offer Fender Stratocatsers for 599-499$ which is just 200-100$ more than a standard Squier Strat. If it takes just 200$ to jack up the quality so significantly, why not. I dunno why so many people then go for the Squier guitars.

  • they go for squiers because a high end squiers is better than low end fender. I am personnallly convinced that parts between a mexican std and a cv squier are on the same level of quality, or could be better for the squiers... Meaning you pay the 200$ more for the labor rate difference, and the FENDER logo on the headstock...

  • Ohh-kay? Then why did the dude just a few lines down told me that the difference in quality betwene a Squier and a Fender are huge? He told me that the only way I could get the sound quality on a Squier to even remotely match that of a Fender is if I buy 1000$ amp.

  • i think the best way is to try them in stores... but i think that its not because a guitar is made in china and wear the logo "squier" that it is a shitty axe. in my opinion, if you are a starting player, get a good squier; but if you wanna be a more casual player, get a good fender e.g. the road worn series or std american...

  • I did try them both in store but since I'm not that trained I couldn't really feel the difference.

But like I said before, if those Fenders that I see cost (generally) 499$ and a standard issue Squier costs 399$, I don't think 100$ give or take will ruin me financially. Might as well play it safe, shell out 100-200$ extra and get a good quality guitar.

And I am a strating player btw.

Thanks for your advice; it's of great help :)

  • ive only been playing for a year and half now, and if i could make my choice again, i would go for a more expensive guitar such as the very good classic player 60 (around 600bucks) or the road worn series (800)..

  • Heard they're really good. They also offer really nice HSS strats.

    Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

  • most people go for american standard strats which Im pretty sure cost more than $599

  • Yeah, brand new they are like $1,500 now. I own an American Standard Tele w/ an ash body. It's quite a nice guitar.

  • #1 was great!!

  • @regelemihai

    you are a complete idiot.

  • @SmashBD

What did I say to offend you?

  • In fact I think I've found the video sent by God to you, the guy in the following link demos the Squier Classic Vibe 50's and 60's guitars AS WELL AS his John Mayer Strat! So you can basically compare the tone. Talk about convenient, lol.

    Here's the link : watch?v=1a1m9wrjddo

  • Thnaks dude. It was illuminating. It's weird because he has the exact same JM guitar we were talking about(which is featured in this video too) that cost him 300$. Even if it's used, if I can get that model specifically, I'd pance on it.

  • *facepalm* You're not the brightest of the bunch are ya, lol. The JM was the black one at the end and it cost him $1500. He compared it to the Squier Classic Vibes which cost him $300. That's why I'm saying those Squier CV strats are awesome and you should take a look at them.

  • I am usually sharper. After 5 hours drive I'm worn out :(

It was my mistakee. The JM one I was talking about was the one shown in this video. The Squier replica of the same model, in other words.

  • The Squier is made in Indonesia I think, or China. Not sure. So Labour cost is lower and quality control isn't as good (but these guitars are awesome quality). Just choose whatever feels and sounds good to your ears and your hands, the colour won't be a problem, if you see 2 60's Squier CV strats in the store, pick both up and choose the one that feels the best, trust me that's the most important part, sound can always be changed or upgraded.

  • very good man

  • yeah it WAS for sale. I sold it like a year ago. Don't really remember exactly what I got for it.....

  • you said it was for sale? how much?

  • hey what kinda peavey is that in the back, is that an old deuce or maybe a renown, just curious cus I have an old 72 mace that i love!!

  • It's some kind of TKO bass amp.... It's sort of on loan from a buddy for rehearsal purposes

  • great playing and wow you have amazing gear :[

  • Thanks!

  • i was defending your improv soloing

  • Thanks, I kinda thought that's what you were getting at.....

  • when free styling you cant steal music talk shit less

  • I'm not sure I follow what you're saying.....

  • Hey great playing! Quick question: how is the action on that thing?

  • It's really not that different than any other Strat really. It's pretty much got a neck like the 62 reissue. I'm pretty convinced that you can any American strat to play well if you (or someone else) can just get it setup and dialed in right. Thanks for the compliment.

  • Haha dude wheres the tempo? haha at that funk thing in the beggining, the foot has another tempo... Its funny all those guitar maniacs owns the most expensive equpment with 200 pedals, while sucking at playing.

  • And thank you too for your lovely comments. Another satisfied customer. Can you point me to some of your playing anywhere online? Just curious.

  • You have to work on rhythm (you play notes too early!) and not playing as sloppy as you did. Over all, it sounded good. Your musical ideas were pretty interesting, but it was not delivered as well as it could.

  • Did anyone ever notice that the people that post negative or critical comments never have any of their own videos uploaded? Happens all the time......

  • Gee, I never thought of that. Thanks! And by the way, my comment wasn't negative. It was constructive criticism. In order to become a better player I believe there are some key things you need to work on: Your rhythm and playing more clean. Instead of discarding the comment as foul and mean maybe you should realize that your playing isn't great. If you only posted the video to get many comments like "GOD! YOU ARE THA BEST! I JUST CAME IN MY PANTZ! LOLZ!1!!", well f*** you too then.

  • Ooh and vulgar too, how creative! I have no desire to receive crazy accolades or discard any negative ones. I was simply trying to consider the source for the criticism and commenting on a trend that I've noticed. There are some folks who can actually control themselves and follow the "if you don't have anything nice to say...." rule..... Best of luck to ya.....

  • My writing is at least more creative than your playing. You are just stealing bits and pieces from others guitarist. I conider you as a guitar sampler. LOL

  • And there it is..... Wouldn't you have felt better if you would have just started out by saying "I'm better than you" in the first place? Maybe you are maybe you aren't, I don't really care. I think it's pretty obvious that this is me screwing around in my basement, not application to the Guitar School..... Why does everyone take this stuff so seriously? Really......

  • You're the only one taking it serious dude.. :P Big Fail. sorry

  • Then put a video up of you playing and I'll give it a listen and form my own opinion, but to simply say "I'm better than you" after seeing someone do an improv jam for the main purpose of demoing a guitar is silly.

I enjoyed all the little licks thrown in here, it was neat. Nice geetar too :)

But yea go hang out with some wolves or something.

  • lol. yes its true! =P

i need that guitar sooo baaad! i need money... :P

    keep playing

  • ill take the john mayer strat over all the other guitars hehe

  • Man, how many guitars you got? Haha, i see all your guitars on the wall, plus another strat on the rack! Plus one of the most amazing guitars ever built in your hand :P

  • the amp sounds crappy with te strat

marshall isn't really suitable for a strat .

    take the hot rod men!

  • im sorry ever heard of jimi hendrix? i believe his combination of strat and marshall sounded pretty sweet. and stevie ray used them as well. and john mayer uses marshall bluesbreaker. so i think a amrshall and a strat sound pretty awesome.

  • beautiful sound! ur an awesome guitarist too! :)

  • Thanks!

  • What do you do for a living to have such a collection? *stunned expression*

  • This is a sweeet demo!! Loved watching and listening!!

    Such a rich tone!! 5*'s!

  • Thanks man.

  • have you sold it yet?

  • Yep, she's gone.

  • Dump the Pedals,...

  • a billy bo in the background <3

    +omg just noticed the amps

    great taste!

  • are you using a reverb pedal?

  • jesus christ what do you do for a living

  • I'm a shepherd

  • I'd like to know if this guitar can sound deep in lows ?

'cause in this video, it looks like she only has high treble, but I hope that it's from the amp setting :(

  • It's got a nice full sound to it. Keep in mind all of the different processing that's involved from me playing it to come out of your computer's speakers...... A nice bassy amp is always good for a strat though....

  • you must be an engineer to afford all that haha!

  • And you type really bad. You should read what you wrote before you create a post! Thanks!

  • Awesome playing man!

  • Thanks!

  • God I need to get my hands on some of those Big Dipper pickups, but they are so hard to come by, what pickups are similar?

  • Yeah they're good. I've had Fender's 54's that I like. I also like the Texas Specials, but they're not really "similar" to these. The big dippers have this very unique "chirp" to them that I haven't found on any others. If you're really looking for a good strat sound like that, I'd say that they're probably worth what you'd have to pay for them on eBay. I've also heard very good things about Holy Grails from Lace, but I've never used them.

  • Is that a boss RT-20 I see on the bottom left side of your pedal board?

  • Yeah it is. It's OK, but I found that you've got to have the expression pedal with it. Since I recorded this, I've swapped it out with a H&K Rotosphere that I really like. But the RT-20 isn't bad.

  • Do a vid with that Firebird or that Gretsch man!

  • Yeah I hope to soon. My pregnant wife and my 2 year old tend to set my schedule for me...... Thanks for watching!

  • Great playing. What pickups did it have?

Also, you mention you built a Marshall kit, where can I get one of those? tubes?

    Peace

  • great collection you have going.

  • Thanks!

  • I like the srv little wing

  • Thanks, I dig that tune.....

  • Masterpiece of a guitar

    Congratz

  • Sounds nice, Enjoyed listening to you :)

  • you really use all those guitars?

  • different sounds

  • Yep. Thx for the thumbs down.....

  • yeah i know eh...and john mayer has more than 200!

  • what you think about the cusack screamer fuzz to have the JM's sound??

  • my singer bought a JM strat a few months ago, partly bc it's a great guitar and partly bc Mayer is one of his heroes. He played the SRV version a few weeks ago and actually prefers it, but is still more than happy with the John start.

  • Yeah I sold the JM Strat b/c I wanted something else. I kept a 57 that I built and an SRV that I've done a lot of modding on. Always liked the JM, just didn't need 3 strats.

  • Like yer set up there. Nice guitars. You like that Strat? never played the John Mayer signature, but I like the sound so far.

  • Yeah I dug it..... But I really like the Flying V that I bought with the cash from the sale. But I really did buy it b/c it's a great Strat. If you dig Strats, you should check one out whether you like John Mayer or not.... Really

  • is the neck much bigger than a regular modern c-shape cause im thinking of getting one but i got small hands

  • Nah it always felt to me like it was a lot like the 62 Reissue neck. Every one's probably a little different, but that's what I always thought about mine.

  • sick tones man

  • Hey man, nice vid,

I just bough a JM strat, Im so glad you are able to get that SRV tone out of it because I was worried that I should have got the SRV strat instead.

What were the settings when you get that SRV tone?

  • I usually play with the mids pretty low, the bass in the middle, and the treble and/or presence control a little above the middle. Take a TS-9 and start with all the knobs at 12 o'clock and adjust from there. Good luck!

  • I was wondering when you were gonna bust our little wing

  • Is it true the frets on that guitar are Dunlop 6105s?

  • Yes, 6105 Frets. I love them, they are the perfect size for me.

  • For some reason that guitar sounded terrible...suprising from a john mayer signature

  • no dude its amazing it sounds better than any other guitar ive played coming out of a litte fender frontman that comes with the squiers

  • Why would anyone want to buy a John Mayer strat?

  • Well why were you searching for it then?

Reality: Whether you like him or not, this is a great sounding strat b/c of the pickups that are unique to it. Otherwise, it's pretty much a '62RI. I like JM's Blues/Rock stuff pretty well, but I bought this axe b/c it's killer, not b/c his name's on it.

It's long gone now, and it brought a pretty penny. I didn't ask the dude his stance on JM.

  • I am the one that bought this guitar and I LOVE it! I like John Mayers music, but the main selling points for me were the larger C shaped neck, which fits my bigger hands great, the pickups are amazing and I also love the 6105 frets, they are the perfect size for me. This guitar blows me away!

  • Cool man, I meant to send you an email a while back and I just never got around to it. I really loved that guitar, but my other two strats keep me pretty well setup. Glad you're happy with it!

  • ugh man when you turned that tube screamer on i had to say yea baby outloud cuz that sounds sooooo nice

  • Hey, I like your style - you manage to sell it yet?

  • Yessir, it sold and I really dig the Flying V that this dude bought me.

  • it always annoys me when i see someone in a video with 16 guitars and then they play and they suck, FORTUNATELY in this video you are a great guitarist, thats refreshing haha

very nice playing mate, the tone was right on

  • Thanks!

  • what mic did you record the demo with? (at the amp)

  • The mic is a pretty standard SM57 from Shure. They're OK, but I've since started using a Sennheiser e609 and I like it a lot better.

  • Thanks!

  • Great guitar and great man! Compliments, sound is very good, very very good! By..

  • great playing on the little wing

  • Thanks man. I got started in it, but I kinda lost concentration and forgot the changes towards the end..... I like that guitar a lot, but I've been in more of a Gibson phase for a while and this one's going to pay for the Flying V I just bought.....
