  • He is Drunk but so Cool.. Oh Dano boy!!!

  • Watching this in honor of Mr. Hurt's birthday!

  • surprising to see so much racism here; the funny thing is that, for all the racist rants about "everyone who isn't my race has an underdeveloped mind etc" racism itself is often a good indicator of an underdeveloped mind. What are the most racist places in the world? they're also the least educated, lowest average IQ, lowest scientific literacy, etc. Charlie's response to this degenerate, a good knock to the skull, is well appreciated.

  • John Hurt-- National treasure or universal treasure?

  • Jellon Lamb. It's like he jumped out of the pages of a Dostoevsky novel and into the frying pan that is the Australian outback. Great character. Great writing. Great performance. Fun for the whole family ;)

  • @TheFunkyCaucasian yeah frying pan, they all look like their skin is leather, somehow the outback is scarier than some of these people

  • John Hurt seems to be a good actor. I mean what he plays there is not Winston Smith from "1984" anymore.

  • Out of all the things he said the biggest truth was when he said ''We are White men...Beasts''

  • @MultiMuchacho Oh you :3

  • @Menegoth lol just being honest.

  • @MultiMuchacho Being honest doesn't make you right.

  • @Menegoth NO their Savage role throughout history does. Plus he said it not me. I think it's fitting coming from a white man.

  • @MultiMuchacho Er, mate. He said "We are white men, sir. NOT beasts." Implying that it's the 'blacks' who are beasts.Besides, it's quite racist to judge an entire race just by the acts of a few people, be it whites or blacks or whatever.

  • @Menegoth very true. You win.

  • @Menegoth You sound much the expert on the "acts of a few". Prejudice and discrimination are words that I happily ascribe to myself. To say one is the same as many or one is different from many is a useful tool. When one applies value to those distinctions one makes one open to criticism. We are all beasts and the aboriginals were peculiar beasts indeed. I don't expect you will ever truly understand and I will not be your educator.

  • @Menegoth Why even judge someone on the basis of his race?

  • @sqccccccccc Because races have inherent differences.

  • @Menegoth this is true, races are BIOLOGICALLY AND PHYSIOLOGICALLY different

  • @NordicSteel no stats, sample sizes, actual studies to back that up, just your irrelevant prejudice

  • nobody does reptilian better

  • Great scene, but I would've put one right above his craw for that "Hibernian pig shit" remark, sent him to meet Cromwell.

  • Monkeeees :D:

  • Seeing him in this movie made me think John Hurt would have played a fantastic Marlow in a film adaptation of the Heart of Darkness.

  • "No finer race to have ever peeled a potato."

    LOL

  • This is one of the most memorable bit parts of any movie. He sets the tone for the entire story in two short scenes.

  • my name is charlie murphy!!!!

  • John Hurt is harrowing.

  • John Hurt is one of the best.

  • Hurt was born to play the role of Cobra Commander. Too bad they'll never make a G.I. Joe movie worthy of his talent.

  • Sweet lord, that man can do his job.

  • "Bloody flies... Kill one and a dozen more show up for the funeral". Brilliant line...

  • Stunning acting from Hurt. Mr Murphy was a bastard.

  • @dannyhustonfan - maybe the film was set in 1913 oh pedantic one.

  • 3 people couldnt take the Irish jokes

  • i like how all these evolutionists omit the other half of the title

The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection: The Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life

  • @Skad8erateher you cant figure out why people shorten the title? lol are you under the impression that the other half of the title contradicts the first half, what was your point exactly?

  • john hurt was brourght up in the same place as i am now :)

  • And this man hasn't won an oscar yet.

  • its funny that people laughed at darwins theory back then but its depressing that some still do now

  • @bigmanoooo1

    LOL

  • Travel around the world with an Latino women rockmycity.info

  • Hurt could/ SHOULD play Capt. Jack's dad

  • "Unhand me Murphy, or I'll slit your fucking throat"

  • Not a Western ... this is a Colonial!

  • He's right about the flies in Australia, absolutely terminators, they never stop.

  • The Greatest Western since.. Unforgiven!!

  • brilliant movie

  • @dannyhustonfan Yeah well spotted dude very perceptive of you :-)

  • awesome, this one and "assasination of jesse james.." is best westerns ever.."unforgiven" too..

  • greetings dear boy!... i believe the flys and maggots within this rabid infested rotting stink hole have borrowed deep in my mind, thus affecting my ability to utilize the designated areas in which im supposed to defecate.... But please!.......come in :D

  • let us then drink to the irish! no finer race of men ever.......?? peeled a potato

  • ....'danny boy' is a folk song. 'Amazing Grace` was first sung by a white boy from Tenessee, right?. Or was it an undated black spiritual? But please think of poor, poor Dan O'Reilly. Then again think of this as just a genius film. Up to you really.

  • I need help -- I can't seem to stop re-playing this video. It's just too good.

    Help.

  • The parallels between this film and Heart of Darkness are evident. An untamed and wild land that adversely affects the 'civil'. European attempts to civilise it. A wraithlike and illusive character the protagonist seeks and the natives view in awe and fear, spirit or goldlike. In this monologue Hurt makes a specific reference to the Congo. This brilliant film is almost an Australian Heart of Darkness in my opinion. Obviously not an adaptation but maybe inspired, much like Apocalypse Now.

  • @bausy88 never was a fan of apocalypse now, but you're idea is quite true.

  • Definatley 1 of the best films of the decade, perfectly cast, big guy pearce fan, and danny houston just turned out an absolute demon of a character, david wenham too. Big props to hurt tho for this scene, he is just amazing, loved him in alien, and v for vendetta

  • I agree, this is the best movie in the last 10 years, and this is one of the best monologues in cinematography ever.

  • Best film of the 2000s, easily.

  • What an amazing movie. Wow.

  • He's great actor... May God bless him! He must live long! *_*

  • great scene

  • The Real Film about Australia. Forget the other one with Nicole Kidman!!!

  • If they ever make a movie out of 'Blood Meridian', the book by Cormac McCarthy, it would be extremely difficult to watch. This movie, though violent, pales in comparison to that blood bath of a story. This is an incredible movie I have to say. Love the realism. Perhaps the best Western film ever...?

  • Good point. Most Cormac McCarthy stories would be hard to watch as movies and not necessarily because of the blood. I think "The Road" is going to be a good movie, but also a depressing experience.

  • The writer of this must have been influenced by "Blood Meridian".

  • So true. And a good counterpoint to those who say BM couldn't be filmed.

  • @jaybird321 Nick Cave <3

  • Ok ok, Nick Cave is talented, BM influence or not. I think his proposed screenplay for the Gladiator sequel would have been excellent.

  • his job is to explain the nihilism of the whole movie

plus guy pearce has never looked so badass as in this scene, like, how the hell is that the same actor who plays that pretty, vulnerable businessman in "First Snow."

anyone who likes this movie should also check out "Ravenous" (1999) with Pearce as a different type of character. Also a "western" in some sense.

  • In Australia we call it the bush.

  • Ha, we couldn't really call it a Bush Movie in place of a Western could we. haha

  • Love the movie, but may I ask why people refer to it as a 'Western'? I always thought 'westerns' were set in America, this movie is set in Australia. Or is it because it simply contains guys that look like cowboys and set in a similar peiod of time that people call it a 'Western'??

  • I'd say that the 'western' genre is more about an attitude.

As an Australian, I'd say that the period of the American west and the Australian bushranger period were very similar. There were differences, but the similarities are enough that a movie set in Australia can be a 'western'.

  • Its more to do with the period of time, the cinematography, the characters etc. Its certainly a western.

  • He's like the British Christopher Walken: he could be in the crappiest movie and still steel/steal the scene.

  • This isn't a crappy movie- but he is brilliant

  • are you saying The Proposition is crappy?

  • Ian McKellan & John Hurt & Patrick Stewart & Christopher Lee, UNITE! To form the most amazingly-voiced band of actors ever.

  • I completely agree. But don't forget Alan Rickman too.

  • I hope James Earl Jones, Sam Elliot and Keith David join?

  • You forgot Alan Rickman

  • One of my favorite movies. It's a western without being set in the stereotypical "Wild West" reminescent of the old days of the man with no name films, and High Plains Drifter. Brilliant writting, brilliant performances. Just an awesome movies. Unfortnately, it's one of too few that we've seen here in the states.

  • that John Hurt !!

  • Comment removed

  • Beautifully written dialogue. Nice work Nick Cave!

  • "No finer race of me have ever . . . peeled a potato."

-- LOL! Pwned by John Hurt!!

  • hahahahaha

  • EXAMPLE; Dude did you see that guys face come off!!! It was all like waaaaaghhh!! REWIND!

  • One of the best films ive ever seen, good writing and acting is proof you don't need cgi monkeys to entertain. We americans have such short attention spans, that we usually dont have a warm reception for anything even mildly intellectual. It's a shame.

  • This is one of my very favourite films. So many brilliant performances - no bad ones. John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Danny Huston and amazing in this film. If you want to watch a film primarily for watching good acting, this is the film to see.

  • The Proposition (Irishman)

    search this: 4FrVCPBU6k

Hey can you post the following scene.

Jellon Lamb: What is an Irishman but a nigger turned inside out?

  • I believe Danny Boy was 1910.

  • I've never seen a better performance from John Hurt. However, he was outshone in this film by Danny Huston.

  • you made a vey good point here..

you are correct about both era's..

    It's then a mistake, an anachrony !

  • @dunbar555 Not in the Wild Bars. before the song was known.

  • can't believe how underrated this entire movie is! i think it is one of the greatest films of all thim; john hurt is mindblowing, danny huston is amazing, the cinematography is stunning, nick cave's scrpit and soundtrack - beautiful

  • I don't think it's underrated. It got rave reviews by the critics. Everyone knows this movie is awesome. :) Maybe it didn't make a killing at the box office, but a great movie that maketh not.

  • I guess it's because of the fact this movie is a western(or at least that's what it says on my DVD case)

and people these days are more into things like harry potter or pirates of the Caribbean-- or even other types of movies.. like "what happens in vegas, or baby mama"

Westerns are looked down upon by a LOT of people from the looks of it, but I don't see any reason why D:

In schools you get funny looks for liking it, though it shouldn't matter who watches what D:

    I love this movie!

    I dunno..

  • I think it comes from the severe oversaturation of bad westerns during the early years of film. Yes there are plenty of good westerns, but from the time of silent films through the first 50 years of films, we got a lot of westerns. Many of them dispite their popularity..where quite bad, that includes a good many Roy Rogers and John Wayne films/shows.

Now and days modern audiences almost find them corny, so when a good western shows up, it may not be so quickly well recieved by the public.

  • Hey can you post the following scene.

Jellon Lamb: What is an Irishman but a nigger turned inside out?

  • this guy is brillant

  • I have that scene and I can upload it, but I dont see anything special about it.

  • Its a fantastic scene, a brilliant piece of writing with a great insight into the mindset of the Aborigines at that time.

  • can you upload the film please please please

  • love it,as any one got the scene with the aborigines in the barn that start howling.

  • a great performance - rather thought provoking.

  • We are white men you and I.

  • If He had played the mouth of Sauron...

    Aragorn would have comitted suicide!

  • Hurt has a wonderful voice and he uses great tones in his speeches. Listen to him in 'V For Vendetta', amazing!

  • go fuck yourself dubzy81

  • Character, of which you have none!

  • are u complimenting him?? whats with the prophanity???

  • I'm doing this as my HSC major work in drama. Thanks for putting it on here dude. Absolutely amazing!

  • You can't fool me. That was Willie Nelson doing a British accent. ;-D
