  • If you like reggae, reggaeton, or dancehall music, "reggaelinx website"is an awesome site for you.

  • the name one drop is not because everything drops one the third. then it'd be called the three drop :)

it's because you usually avoid playing anything on the first beat, or you 'drop' the first beat - hence - the 'one drop' :)

but this guy plays great which is the only thing that matters

  • Awesome. FINALLY, someone gives a legitimate reggae lesson. I love how you broke it down. Best one on Youtube.

  • great intro!

  • Yes but the down stroke on the hi hat mimics the guitar part of chick chick-chick chic

  • Pau Gasol!!!!!!!!! 0_o

  • It's usefull :D

  • YEAH MAN!!!!!

    hehehe

yeah you've done your reseach on reggae very well

many people try to play it.. but sounds much more like hevy metal..pop or even punk

  • YEAH MAN!!!!!

  • Thanks, Erik, for your demonstration. However you have not at all mentioned the most important influence on Reggae, the core of Reggae, the thing which gives it its characteristic beat, and that is the influence of Rastafarian drumming. A good example of this can be seen in the Nyhabinghi Rasta Chant video on YouTube uploaded by "Islandmysticfilms".

Any music which does not have this beat is not recognized by Jamaicans as reggae.

  • somebody knows to explain "how to play" or has a partition of part 3:33? thx

  • Finally someone knows how to play Reaggae!!

  • nice finger works on 4:13!

  • merci beaucoup maitre stam

  • Thank you. This video really helped grasp reggae beat.

  • thanks for sharing your skills bro,

  • Nice playing

  • BELLO!!!!

  • too swung

  • Excelente!!!

  • Pretty cool...thanks for the video. Need to get my one drop style down

  • sah weet!

  • this is an excellent instructional video. thank you.

  • Thanks- really well explained

  • niiec been trying to fihure out the quarter note triple for so longgg. now i can perfect it, thansk erik!!!

  • nice job sounds good thanks for sharing your knowledge

  • mean cuzzzzzz.

  • non c'est faux, je suis débutant en reggea drumming et j'ai repéré deux trois trucs intéressant pour démarrer

  • the sound on the snare and hi hat does not sound right...

  • The "one drop" is not called "one drop" because everything (bass & snare) drops on the three.

It is called because there is only one drop in a bar.

    1 2 drop 4 | 1 2 drop 4 | and so on

  • yer getting pedantic ... that is basically what he said anyhow ... so yer point is?

  • Well yeah in a way it did come from jazz. Early Ska was made when Jamaican people picked up the R&B and Jazz sounds from New Orleans radio and tried to imitate them. The reggae sound is a more laid back version of this - I'd imagine it was slowed down as it would be hard to play in sweltering heat after smoking loads of ganja.

  • Nice drumming

Taught me something even though I've

been listening to reggae since I was a

    child and I'm nearly 36

    Bless

  • that was legit

  • Thank you cheers from Tennessee,USA

  • I learned something! Yeah!

  • the noice of that drum is not even close to reggae, nice playing though

  • pretty good I really learned somthing

  • it's usually best to start with the basics or "generic versions" I play drums already, but I just wanted little info on the reggae feel for an up coming project. thank you much for the well structured lesson! it's the best I've found so far. it leaves things open for application

  • just listen to the music.....

  • stop reading books about it and go live it...this is very very generic versions...

  • sos un groso chabon

  • "Most of these grooves started out with a swing feel"

Evidence please? Can u cite any tracks or artists? No, because this isnt true + even if Jamaicans wr playing shuffle grooves n the early 60s that is not to say reggae "evolved from Jazz."

That triplet version o the 1 Drop is much later devlpment by Carly Barrett. + it doesnt need to b so complicated; reggae grooves r simple + precise.

If u add 4-on-the-floor bass kicks it is no longer "one drop"! -that is charctristic o the Steppers groove.

  • yeah i her ya man, he is giving the book versions of these riddims...I hear you loud and clear.

  • with the jazz comment, he's probably talking about how ska came from jazz. which it really didn't but, people like don drummond, tommy mcCook, jerry haynes, were jazz musicians, but think about it, ska and jazz have basically the same format of music, the hook, a bunch of solos, the hook again, well in the case of the skatalites at least.

  • yea Carlton bennet is the man!

  • WELL done.

  • tooo simple,

  • dude could you send me the tabs please?

  • Aloha from Hawaii! Very nice. Great teaching! Thank you sooo much! :D

  • Erik kicks ass!
