Thanks, Erik, for your demonstration. However you have not at all mentioned the most important influence on Reggae, the core of Reggae, the thing which gives it its characteristic beat, and that is the influence of Rastafarian drumming. A good example of this can be seen in the Nyhabinghi Rasta Chant video on YouTube uploaded by "Islandmysticfilms".
Any music which does not have this beat is not recognized by Jamaicans as reggae.
Well yeah in a way it did come from jazz. Early Ska was made when Jamaican people picked up the R&B and Jazz sounds from New Orleans radio and tried to imitate them. The reggae sound is a more laid back version of this - I'd imagine it was slowed down as it would be hard to play in sweltering heat after smoking loads of ganja.
it's usually best to start with the basics or "generic versions" I play drums already, but I just wanted little info on the reggae feel for an up coming project. thank you much for the well structured lesson! it's the best I've found so far. it leaves things open for application
"Most of these grooves started out with a swing feel"
Evidence please? Can u cite any tracks or artists? No, because this isnt true + even if Jamaicans wr playing shuffle grooves n the early 60s that is not to say reggae "evolved from Jazz."
That triplet version o the 1 Drop is much later devlpment by Carly Barrett. + it doesnt need to b so complicated; reggae grooves r simple + precise.
If u add 4-on-the-floor bass kicks it is no longer "one drop"! -that is charctristic o the Steppers groove.
with the jazz comment, he's probably talking about how ska came from jazz. which it really didn't but, people like don drummond, tommy mcCook, jerry haynes, were jazz musicians, but think about it, ska and jazz have basically the same format of music, the hook, a bunch of solos, the hook again, well in the case of the skatalites at least.
If you like reggae, reggaeton, or dancehall music, "reggaelinx website"is an awesome site for you.

the name one drop is not because everything drops one the third. then it'd be called the three drop :)
it's because you usually avoid playing anything on the first beat, or you 'drop' the first beat - hence - the 'one drop' :)
but this guy plays great which is the only thing that matters

the sound on the snare and hi hat does not sound right...
peacerevolt 2 years ago
The "one drop" is not called "one drop" because everything (bass & snare) drops on the three.
It is called because there is only one drop in a bar.
1 2 drop 4 | 1 2 drop 4 | and so on
