PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can you teach me how to play 'i like it like that' by Pete Rodriguez. I have searched the internet and no one can help me.
@latinpianist It was similar to the video posted below. You know, the one with the notes. Anyway, thanks for the tutorial. I wish I found it back then when I was learning this montuno. How long have you been playing anyway? I keep on looking for some resources on latin music. Do you think you could give me some suggestion? :-) I used the two books by Rebeca Mauleon. They are wonderul!
@abrahammountain How is this emberrasing to you? ? Im not emberrased to be a great help for thousands out there looking for people who are willing to step it up who are not worried about criticism and are not intimidated by nothing. My lessons are not pro to this point, with the time that I have on my hands I can only do so much. I will soon prepare better lessons. I accept your critism and you're right but it cant be a negative thing to not be prepared.
Thanx 4 posting that video, what I like about it is, the way u are teaching it...you are going step by step and making it clear for everybody to understand.......
Latin Pianist...as a gospel musician I really benefitted from your video..it was clear and concise...Would you be able to play the left hand so I can see how it should sound all together? Also, what is the next step to learning to play this kind of music?
Latinpianist, not only you play beautiful, but you like to share with others how to play it. Thank you for your tutorial. You are the ONLY ONE that "really" teaches the montuno. You take the time; you give the notes; you play in slow motion;, and do so much more for all those who are beginners with the montuno. THANK YOU!!!!!!
man, you teaching are the best, it was so easy for me to understand and to do what you do, i play the guitar, but in the way you teach in the keys; is easy for me to get in it!!! thanks!!!!
sounds good to me. I appreciate a free lesson and its been my experience that there is always something to learn and every musician has something to offer. I get what you are trying to show us, you don't have to play it all perfectly for it to make sense. thanks for the help latinpianist!
Dude you messed up a lot. Check your video once more. I wrote the notes down on sheet music and it was totally going bad towards the end. You start off well but at the end you tell the viewer to do a note than you add some more while you're playing but you never tell the viewer. I find it a bit mediocre. You have much to learn. Just keep practicing and you'll get there. Just some constructive criticism. You'll definately throw a begginner off with the lesson.

Pues a mí me ha parecido una excelente clase dada con infinita paciencia. Muchas gracias. Es al vídeo más claro que he visto para empezar a lanzarme con este estilo.
hey latin pianist, you are GREAT. EXCELLENT teacher. 1 question please, can you play montuno on a salsa rhythm? sorry my ignorance is total with latin music, i want to learn. and thank God i found you coz you show these great latin piano licks. Thanks man
Im planning a project for this fall...i will post more videos. more profesional and stuff for the benefit of everyone in need of it. God bless you and thank you.
If you're refering to the left hand of the piano-player, it quite often doubles some or even all notes of the right hand - most importantly the deepest notes of the right hand (played by the thumb here), witch can also be doubled one octave up by the right 5th finger.
If you're refering to the actual bassline, it's better just to listen to tunes using it, since it's a common basic tumbao-bass, like in "Juliana" by DLG (watch?v=D9dBr1aW24E)
Good job creating and posting all these videos. It helps a lot of us.
I'd like to point out that this progression is maybe better described as a i - iv - V - iv - i. What are described as passing tones outline an Fm7 chord. In your version you don't actually play an F, but as often happens in an ensemble, the piano may leave out notes that the bass player would fill out. In the video response music posted, there is an F bass followed by Ab, C and Eb (Fm7) in the middle of bar 1 and 3.
Another minor point is the note referred to as G# should be referred to as Ab since the tonality or key of the progression is Cm. It's the same note, but notation convention is like that. Notice that when you write the accidentals (flats and sharps) for the key in front of the staff it takes care of that. In this case Cm has 3 flats (Bb, Eb, Ab) like its relative major key of Eb. So the note is written Ab automatically.

Yeah. Clave 3-2 would be 1-2-3---1-2. Timing is really important so make sure you make a real pause in between 1-2-3 and 1-2. If you dont then you automatically switch to the 2-3 clave. In the 2-3 clave, 1-2---1-2-3. So the pause determines what clave it is. On my next video, i will show a bit about the clave.

(sorry, this was supposed to be an answer to the question "what is the bass pattern to this latin pianist?")
4StringDude 3 years ago
Good job creating and posting all these videos. It helps a lot of us.
I'd like to point out that this progression is maybe better described as a i - iv - V - iv - i. What are described as passing tones outline an Fm7 chord. In your version you don't actually play an F, but as often happens in an ensemble, the piano may leave out notes that the bass player would fill out. In the video response music posted, there is an F bass followed by Ab, C and Eb (Fm7) in the middle of bar 1 and 3.
itorres008 3 years ago
hey thanks. seems like you are very familiar with music.
latinpianist 3 years ago
Of course, any of the chords could be played with or without 7ths, 9ths, alterations, as preferred, but the feel is a popular i - iv - V progression.
(continues)
itorres008 3 years ago
Another minor point is the note referred to as G# should be referred to as Ab since the tonality or key of the progression is Cm. It's the same note, but notation convention is like that. Notice that when you write the accidentals (flats and sharps) for the key in front of the staff it takes care of that. In this case Cm has 3 flats (Bb, Eb, Ab) like its relative major key of Eb. So the note is written Ab automatically.
Keep up the good work.
