OMG I just discovered I don't have the real En Gallop... The one I have was given to me by a friend (it's an mp3 file). It lasts for 6:26, and while it's very very similar, she sings differently and in the "free economy" part she says "bitch"... Anyone know what version is that?
@Non594 This version is from The Milk-Eyed Mender. The version you have is from one of her earlier self-released/self-produced albums called Walnut Whales. The other's called Yarn and Glue. Both of those together have eight songs she rerecorded and changed a bit for her first actual album. You could see which songs are on what on her wiki page. They also have a few really good songs she chose not to put on The Milk-Eyed Mender like Flying a Kite and Erin.
I think this song is more about making life changing decisions like dropping out of school "and i walk from a higher education" to do what you really want to do in life, i guess in her case was music. And the part that says "never get so attached to a poem, you forget truth that lacks lyricism" i think is about having always a foot on the ground, that even when you know you're doing what's your thing to do in life, you still have to realize that that's not an easy thing.
@Hatrackman Not to mention: There have only been about 115 billion people ever born. With a current population of around 7 billion, I figure it'd only take about a year or two to kill off the remaining angels if we start from 0 tomorrow.
I always thought this song was about her life. She's looking back. Like she says that even though it was a rough road to fame and she left a lot of people behind she still loves to be famous. "Never draw to close to the heat...eat" she forgot about life because of heat=fame? Maybe...
@Patrawrick It's not about fame, but about the creative path. The heat is the fire of trying to find truth day after day, that tends not to be compatible with what actually puts the food on your table. Joanna wasn't free to do as she pleases when she wrote this.
Slowly overtaking "Peach, Plum, Pear" as my fave song from "The Milk-Eyed Mender." I worked backwards through her catalog, so I pretty recently discovered her debut. It's moving up on my most-played music list for a reason: it's utterly breathtaking.
3:30 this melody is sooo genuis.

Her music brings to mind a cobblestone street slightly wet from a mid-afternoon light rain fall.
