The political rights and wrongs of the strike are irrelevant! The fact is that the police (in what we like to call our democracy), were used as a political paramilitary force, were immune to prosecution no matter how badly they behaved, and have still never been brought to book for their crimes in this (and other) disputes in the 80s.
I stood on the picket lines at Wapping and in South Wales in the 80s, I have never had any been in any trouble with the law in my life, and what I saw in those dark days made me totally lose any respect I ever had for the police in this country.
'Those who participated in the fighting described to me how the sailors fought until they run out of cartridges, and then stormed; how the untrained workmen rushed the cossacks and tore them from their horses; how the anaonyous hordes of people, gathering in the darkness around the battle, rose like a tide and poured over the enemy...Before midnight of Monday the cossacks broke and were fleeing' Ten Days That Shook The world; John Reed.
@MrJanesaddictionThat's a very good point and you're right. You're thinking globally and with luxury of hindsight. But the bloke in't street doesn't think globally, long term or altruistically. he only cares about his own little world. if he's offered something better/cheaper, that's all he cares about. Essentially people are selfish.
@MrJanesaddiction The people against the strike were excluded from the decision making process as their opinion was not heard. the scabs who actually went back were prob the tip of the iceberg...we'll never know how many wanted to join them but didn't fancy getting their cars torched. As for public support not lost among those that mattered (ie the public), Maggie's attempt to stay in power in 1987 vs Arfur's attempt to become an MP. Spot the difference.
@MrJanesaddiction A miner gets his wages ... buys a car chooses a VW instead of an Allegro or Maestro built in the midlands..British car job gone..holidays in Benidorm not Blackpool, British chef's job gone..trainers from Taiwan are cheaper than from Peterborough... job gone
Miner's traditional clients, domestic householder, power stations, convert to gas .. STRIKE!!
@MrJanesaddiction So it IS okay for a miner to buy cheap foreign goods over British goods just as everyone else does and justify his actions by having an anti Tory rant. Glad we got that sorted out. Glad also that at least YOU'D buy a bucket of coal for twice as much as its competitor cos its got a union jack on it.
@MrJanesaddiction I think it 's wrong to exclude people from the decision making process and then beat them up when they don't do what they're told. You think it's a price worth paying to win a strike. But hat's the whole point. It helped LOSE the strike, cost the miners public support, led to anti union legislation (still in force) and because Scargill wouldn't condemn violence and so achieved the seemingly impossible, he made Maggie look reasonable. Well, almost
So it's okay for a miner to buy a Spanish holiday, German car, Vietnamese trainers etc and demand that the former factory workers he helped turn into MacDonalds workers pay with their taxes to protect HIS job from market dynamics.
The police were out of order and thats the fact of the matter!! Thatcher made sure she got her way through the use of the police who are supposed to protect the public!! Were the minors not members of the public just wanting to hold on to their jobs.... Anyone who says the behaviour of thatcher and the police was right is clearly and simply a tory fat cat who as always cares not about anyone but themselves.... The minors wernt communists they were british people trying to save their communities

I dont understand why the police behaved the way they had. The way I see it is; taxes pay police so the police really represent the people, which they do right? they are to protect us from the people. But they behaved like the protectors of government and resources. Wouldn a force that protects queen and country or government be the military and not police. The damn police if they had any morale or half a brain would have been with the miners striking for a cause
@368maw Remember people the police are public servants they work for you, you pay there wages, just like everybody else in power, but you hold the real POWER for when it's needed.
I know because i was there and the didnt have the balls to go man to man thatchers wankers backed and supported hope they all have the consequences they deserve scotspunkboy got an insight but my god you had to swerat on that field and dodge the horses to know what we faced. and this post is from dean not my daughter as it will show
@09phillt yeah because profit and shareholders are the only thing that matters. the wealthy and the owners of the means of production should always have the right to unilaterally abuse their positions of power to dominate the vulnerable. FUCKING IDIOT. don't bother looking for the assistance of your fellow people the next time your rights are trampled on you HIERARCHAL SHIT. you don't deserve it.
@itsmeJTke go fuck yourself you jealous cunt, times change and the need for coal went down, what else were they supposed to do, pay them in hope you stupid anarchistic piece of shit
@09phillt the government should have absolutely kept the mines open. coal is a finite energy resource with inelastic demand. over a long period of time it would've definitely become profitable when the economic cycle reassessed itself which you can see at present, now that the UK has completely destroyed it's mining sector. the closures destroyed industry in wales and northern england which has still not recovered. it was a political decision NOT AN ECONOMIC ONE.
@itsmeJTke you stupid bastard, the only people who use coal are people who have normal fires, power stations (who were the main 'customer) have moved on. it was costing more than it was making to keep them open, and then some of these miners were absolute scum anyway, u know, with dropping concrete blocks on taxis taking miners who wanted to work to work. go fuck yourself and your communist socialist pinko liberal retarded cock sucking panda shagging minyans.
@09phillt power stations use oil because thatcher changed her energy policy to what was cheap AT THE TIME and is now the MOST EXPENSIVE. she wilfully chose to destroy both local demand and supply. that is the only reason there are less coal power stations now. it cost more to pay severence, dole money and regeneration funds for areas than it did to subsidise secure energy production for this country, a minority of incidents can't be used to justify economic vandalism. clueless sun-reading idiot.
Thatcher was the best teacher the labour party ever had. She showed that slimebag Kinnock that he could pretend to be socialist and turn the labour party tory and they havnt stopped yet. They abandoned the miners and now jump in bed with the bankers.
thatcher is/was only a figurehead..a face of a system...dont get too hung up on the one person...she will die..her ilk will live on and continue to screw rape n pilage us.....smash the system @
Sadly. Thatchers lasting legacy remains. With the aid of the right wing media, the Unions remain public enemy number 1. One day soon, the unions will rise from these dark days and the working man will see through the thin facade of right wing dogma
@dogs1905 and he will realise that the unions don't care about him, they are only there because the leaders are too stupid to get into politics and must seek power elsewhere.
Thatcher sold out the country and all the governments have carried on the plan. My ma saw it - she was a secretary and saw an eyes only document for a 20year plan to privatise places and shut down british energy and move it. She implemented it right after her first trip to visit the Bilderberg group in Europe - funny that.. What gets me is that it said 'a 20year plan' - means it doesn't mean a thing who you vote for. Topple the corporations and take it back, take back YOUR land, your coal
At first Hitler was NOT elected: he was invited in to power by the previously elected government and then Hitler had the power to install certain heads of the Secret Police--and soon after so-called "terrorist attacks" (done by the secret police) took place and these "terrorist attacks" were used to try to justify certain policies. Remind you of anyone...
If there is one thing which can bring me to tears and believe me I dont cry often, it is the memory of the disgusting and disgraceful treatment of the miners in 1984 by armed police and a government with no moral substance. We will never forget you.
@superfev1Yes I will and thank you for this important chapter in history. The sacrifice and sheer guts and determination of those men and their families has never been matched since. At the time I was a member of militant in Liverpool and we fought their cause hard then and we were devastated by the eventual outcome. The fight goes on though for a fairer world and we must never ever give in.
@humanityfirstnow dream on you deluded fool,NUM declared war on Tories in 1974,Thatcher was ready and smashed NUM in 1984,it was their just desserts.I did not like Thatcher but I was with her on this,it was also the will of the electorate.
@anwarsat dream on yourself and believe the daily mail if you must. Its not my problem I emigrated 20 years ago.Who wants to live in a country where so many people are treated like shit?
@humanityfirstnow I do not read the daily mail, these points are facts, but no doubt you prefer your class war illusions, after all why let the truth ruin a good tale.I disliked Thatcher, but like a stopped clock sometimes she was right.
@anwarsat Truth itself has a history and the context in which history is recited has always to do with facts half truths and lies. Just because it fits neatly with the borders of your imagination of the parameters of what is or could be does not make it truth.
@humanityfirstnow THe reality is that all institutions are inherently middle class in Britain so evrything is viewed throughthe distorted eyes of people who do not truly understand financial hardship. You can empathise as much as possible but you have to taste the pain before you can fully appreciate it. Fairplay for getting out my man, that was a good decision. Where did you go?
Orgreave was only a poor street riot. Want to see a real miners strike? Check out the mineriads in Romania, especially the one from 1999 when 20.000 miners crashed 6000 police and took 1500 of them prisoners :D
@deathtotheunions Yeah because the working class are just drowning in money to buy mines with thanks to fascists like Thatcher. How dare they try to stand up for their rights, they deserved to be illegally spied on and subjected to violent oppression.
5 million lefties can all put £100 each in the pot - but of course socialism is theft so you expect others to pay for it dont you ??? - As for their rights to stop people going to work - yea right.
@deathtotheunions Most people don't have £100 spare to pay, they barely get enough to feed themselves and keep a roof over their heads because of bosses lining their pockets with workers money. And socialism is not theft, it's putting a stop to the theft of our labour and jobs by capitalist parasites like Thatcher.
so again you refuse to put your money where your mouth is but expect others to pay for your lifestyle - get real - oh yes and then you go on strike again and again and again - you just dont understand why so many people said DEATH TO THE UNIONS.
@deathtotheunions : I've just watched an old Channel 4 documentary about the strike.
What a leader Thatcher was. I didn't agree with a lot of her politics, but what a person.
Compare her gritty leadership to Tony Blair being interviewed by Fern Britton about the Iraq war. Poor Tony; so concerned about how history would judge him and then he forgets to make history (except for all the wrong reasons)!
Unions have fought for safe working conditions, fair pay, an end to any kind of discrinination in the workplace, the right not to be sacked on a whim, an end to bullying by bosses or work colleagues, etc etc.
Basically Unions have ensured that you can go to work safely and without prejudice, and get paid fairly for what you do.
These conditions would NOT have been in place without Union activism, and yet you say "death to the Unions"?
Do you really want an end to what the Unions have won?
So it`s okay when unions stop people going to work, send them to Coventry for standing up to the executive and force them to give subs to a labour party run by commies - yea right.
You need to read more - the Labour Party has NEVER been run by Communists.
Trades Unions are mererly the organised representatives of working people, if you don't want to be part of a Union you have no right to the benefits gained by them.
If Thatcher has one real legacy it's the legitimisation fo greed and self-interest, I hear a lot of bleating about an individual's rights but I also see an ignorance of resposibilities as a part of society, and yes there is such a thing.
Hello I am writting an essay about the miners strike for my degree. I want to focus on the battle of Orgreave from the miners points of view. If anyone was a miner at the battle of Ogreave or you had family, friends there I would really appreciate if you could tell me about it.
Thatchers government would have been out of power possibly if it went like the 1974 strikes, and it was cheaper to buy abroad. She also stocked up on Coal, and was using Road Hauliers incase Train Workers were to be sympathetic. I think weakening the Trade Unions was good, as they held too much power, but the treatment was horrible. Although, the miners never mentioned that Taxi Driver, do they?
@nobarney you raise a question not a problem--how do movements begin and become sustainable--I don't think anyone has been able to answer that question. You also disregard the immense power capital as acquired since 84 --media technology including this u tube--all of us are online instead of in the street--something to work on and think about
This makes me so angry. Disgusting how the police could do that to innocent people protesting and innocent people not at all involved asking for an ambulance.
id join with the picket line if i ever needed it.
the torys, the police state, the courts, and that most powerful weapon of all, goverment propaganda machine, the bbc, everyone of them unleashed on its own people, hitler would have been jelous.
their is no fight in the youngsters this day and age, i was 24 in 1984 and full of fight, i would do it all again to get this shit hole of a country back on its feet, elect scargill for prime minister.
too much flouride in the water, mercury in our teeth and in our vaccines, no wonder there is no fight in people today. flouride was first introduced into a water supply at nazi concentration camps, to pacify the jews, gypsys and so on.
thatcher and indeed every prime minister since the 19th century have been puppets of the rothchilds and their zionist helpers.
1984 minors strike, the end of the working class in england from then on.packed me bags and left the UK never to return.Thats my lot,yee can keep that place.
Yeah!!!! The decline in manufacturing in Britain was entirely Maggie's fault and has nothing to do with me or my Japanese car, Taiwanese laptop, Bangladeshi jeans or holidays in Majorca so as I'm without sin I'll cast as many stones as I like and carry on hating people who embraced the principles of the free market economy, just like all the other hypocrites on this page.
You have to wonder why the State in Britain decided to shut down productive labour. They replaced honest work with Financial Services and look where it's got us. TEH RBS. The current recession is a direct result of Britain not making anything useful--no mining--no cars--no steel. Thatcher obliterated the best part of our blessed plot.
it was the Scargill and his thugs that did for the mining industry - Scargill wanted to use the economic power of the miners to bully everyone in this country and to dictate communist policies to the government - the government was elected to run the country, not Scargill and his thugs. it was a pity, but there it is - I would rather have no mining industry and live in a country where the rule of law prevails and the elected governement is in charge not a bunch of thugs and bullies
is you on drugs. who wealds the power in this world. money runs the show. you got money you get justice. the miners fought for their communities and against the total obliteration of our industries. the miners weren't communists (I wish they were) nor were they thugs. just normal working people. y'know you should get to know some commies. we're decent people who want a better world for all. nothing more than that.
Blame the fact that our industries couldn't compete with those form abroad.
Why buy a British car when you can buy a better car from Japan? That's the problem. Although I don't see hwo mining was honest work. They went on strike in the middle of WWII. Not very patriotic and honest.
@williamastanier NO ONE WAS KILLED BY HER! THE COUNTRY GOT RICHER. and unlike hitler she got a majority in the first election and thanks to democracy (not a dictatorship because people had their say) she won two more election majoritys through public support. if you don't like her then burn your credit cards and boycott BT and british gas.
P.S. If times were nearly as bad as nazi germany then the makers of spitting image would be hung or shot
@williamastanier i have been in talks with david cameron to let the FZWSP (frankie zollos working socialist party) lead britain but bon massive knows the real awnser
Anybody who has any doubts about how the state maintains itself should read Antonio Gramsci. The only way to address the way in which we are manipulated by the ruling order should look towards destroying the established norm and examining all of the other options available.
the miners strike was the last great fight of our time , look at us now , when the goverment now says your taxed what do we say now not WHY but how much
To all those idiots who tthink Thatcher was great, we are now dependent on foreign coal and they have now increased their prices now we don't mine our own. That is bad economics.
To all those that think the USSR was great, th miners were getting fake support from them and their puppet unions, the Kremlin okay'd the supply of Polish coal to Britain during the strike.
Now our finance based economy is screwed because we no longer have a worthwhile British manufacturing base.
We are indeed a police state now with a massive loss of civil liberties.. The Thatcher future was to be built on stocks & shares, trading futures and options....now look at us..........boy were we suckered!! Fact; if we were still an industrial nation that had British assets in British hands, we would be far better off today than the financial mess we are in now. Brown has given the banks some £90b thats about £89k for every man woman and child alive today.
If, as your arguing Uberminge we should simply cull of all the buisnesses that dont generate a profit, say sionara to Britains capability to produce any industrial wares whatsoever. Do you really think that the country you profess to "love" should be left so reliant on foreign imports and occasional handouts? Where would that leave us in the future? I hope whatever company you work for goes bust just so you can experience the feeling of being left on the scrapheap.
Well deathtotheunions, how about this? We told you that all the privatisation utilities would eventually go to the highest bidder, which in turn, has been sold to foreigners. This is why we are paying the price now for high gas and electricity bills. Are you now proud to be British now that everything hs been sold off to the French, Spanish, German, Russian, Arabian, Chinese and Indians?
Greed is good Thatcher said, one of the Cardinal Sins may I add, GLUTENY.
If the utilities are run to the best of their ability by so called foreigners then so what. Personally I am a citizen of planet earth. Better that then fuel supply problems caused by striking scum. But you still dont answer the basic question of supply problems from 1965-1985 when we had strong trade unions.
None of you commies understand that the vast majority of people in this country hated the trade unions - stopping people going to work and generally behaving like scum. After all what is the point of a coal industry in the scum num keep going on strike. Proper answers please. Any chance ????
What a nightmare ...Glad I wasnt there and if I was id have fucked off to Spain or somewhee decent not Fucking Yorkshire or Durham working class heroes!!!
whoeva that prosecutor is he's a complete joke, my ode man wa there that day it kicked off and they did nowt wrong heavy handed police stirred it up the coppers should have been charged for aggravating a peacful protest, thatcher burn in hell u bitch ur time is up me duck.
I had mates uncles and a grandfather who worked down the pit.None of them were thugs.Just ordinary working blokes. The riot "police" were no such thing they were squaddies drafted in to do the dirty work.I hope they can live with what they did.Thatcher deserves more than an agonising death not just for taking miners jobs, but the knock on effect it had on communities too.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ha! These miners make me laugh!! Thatcher was exactly what the country needed at that point. The riots were police thugs lining up against mining thugs, the moving pickett is testament to the farce of the whole situation.
uberminge, you are a minge. I hope you die like Thatcher in an agonising way. The people in the UK are now reaping the benefit of Thatchers policies. The country is bankrupt. All the right wing political supporters are now squeeling like the rats they are.
Thatcher ended Britains chance of making fuel for itself. Thats why heating bills are over a £1000 a year and the future of our fuel is left to the Russians and Arabs.
I dont drink but boy am i going to get pissed when that old haggard witch dies i hope its slow and painful, that the dead of these broken communities are waiting at heavans gates to kick the whore strait down to hell. FUCK THATCHER
i was a merchant seaman and me and my wife spent days on the picket line .her working with the girls in the local hall making dinner and me on the line with the lads.those coppers you refer to minge were actually squadies on leave.we got one in the woods he had his raf regiment identity on him so dont give me that crap about coppers doin there jobs .thatcher declared civil war on striking british subjects.
uberminge, the Police were NOT just doing their jobs, waving fistfulls of money, antagonising people??where in the Police rulebook does it say that?,my Brother who wasn't a miner, travelled all over the Northern picket lines handing out food hampers to the strikers, twice he was pulled up,accused of being a flying picket and had the hampers taken off him.the Police were truly cunts who basically were "up" for a fight because they knew the had the law on their side.
so next time you decide to vomit inaccurate bile on here go read a history book. The men who make the profit have the right to have a say in their future, if you dont like that then go try Burma
If you manged to switch off your fear for 5 minutes you would know that 25% of all Britain's wealth was created through ships and coal with and it came from these very people who were fighting for their lives. The same people who fought thatcher and her right-wing bastards for closing profitable shipbuilding yards in Sunderland and Newcastle.
Well Uberminge, your comments smacks of ignorance and your underbelly right-wing mentality has the smell of a working class man rising to the ranks of homeowner/keep your hands of my stack. These mining communities and its people that you denigrate are the very things this country were good about.
you say that as if a working class man rising up the ranks as a bad thing. your "underbelly left-wing mentatlity" would have people stay in the rank of live like we always do and never move up in the world and errrr its the rich peoples fault im like this.
im am saying your left wing underbelly would have people stay in the rank of live like we always do and never move up in the world and errrr its the rich peoples fault im like this.
rising up the ranks as you put it will not make the manufacturing class disappear or the cleaning lady or guy on a production line boxing fish fingers disappear. So we have to protect working people from exploitation from the business class, the greedy and insecure buisness owners who use money to build lives.
Never can we leave the lives of workers in the hands of business owners ever again, they had their opportunity and blew it. Eventually laws were created to protect people from them, byee
The reason working class people have risen "up the ranks" as you put it Benny is not because of the 'rich' or the right wing or tory politicians suddenly showing empathy and deciding to share profits with the people who have created the wealth for them in the first place. No, working people have had to fight long and hard and die for the right to have wealth distributed to them and its still not working the way it can. There will always be working class people manufacturing
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the police shouldve have opened fire on most of you striking assholes...reading all your comments makes me ashamed to have once thought your actions were just. You are right Thatcher was scum. But you just decided to fight the police over it?!!!?? fools. The police were doing their jobs.Just like you wanted to..You are all what is wrong with this country. If i ran the police back then i wouldve took less abuse than they did and beat you all harder, sooner.
The mines that were closed were being kept open by tax payers money.Business is business. Why fund them anymore?...They had to close....Just a shame people lost their lives and jobs over it.Common sense went out the window.Violence again solved nothing.People who fought or acted violently should look back and be ashamed of themselves.10 people died over all this and look what the outcome was.!!The pits were shut anyway.Mob mentality.Disgusting.
not bothered mate..I have a feeling you are a bell end of the highest order indeed. This country is full of cunts like you...For the greater good my friend you should be culled...All pull together or fuck off..This is sink or swim now and shits like you are probably rinsing the state for all you can get....Dont be a cunt...Just take a long walk off beachy head....We will all thank you...I am british...I love my country...Those who appose us shall be called tits.
have never rinsed state of anything in my life,so yet again you talk like acunt! as for the long walk...i wouldl ove to take you for a fucker, then we would see how much of a smart cunt you really were with my fist rammed down your throat you pencil dicked wanker
they carnt kid any one, they were never the police that handled the miners stike, the army were drafted in, and after the strike ended and the mines were closed they were back but they were recruting the miners which had lost their jobs. An extra kick in the teeth to the miners
Don't get me wrong, its tradgic that the pits have closed and communities lost, but I detest the way the whole thing has been portrayed as a fight against good and evil, left and right. Do you honestly think the miners supported Scargill's Marxist view? No, they were just working men who wanted to keep their jobs. But likewise, scabs are not soulless beings. I'm sure many could see the writing on the wall, they had families to feed as well you know.
Trota: the wishes of the people? which people? the 20% of the electorate who voted for thatcher, or the people who lived and worked in the communities this film discusses? the police used vicious violence against honest, working people on her orders. that is not democracy. get real
what amazes me is that these miners were treated like scum by that bitch thatcher when all they wanted was to save their jobs they were not scum they were just good hard working people.and the police were nothing but hired fascist thugs a bit like moseleys blackshirts.

@itsmeJTke go fuck yourself you jealous cunt, times change and the need for coal went down, what else were they supposed to do, pay them in hope you stupid anarchistic piece of shit
09phillt 1 year ago
@09phillt the government should have absolutely kept the mines open. coal is a finite energy resource with inelastic demand. over a long period of time it would've definitely become profitable when the economic cycle reassessed itself which you can see at present, now that the UK has completely destroyed it's mining sector. the closures destroyed industry in wales and northern england which has still not recovered. it was a political decision NOT AN ECONOMIC ONE.
itsmeJTke 1 year ago
@itsmeJTke you stupid bastard, the only people who use coal are people who have normal fires, power stations (who were the main 'customer) have moved on. it was costing more than it was making to keep them open, and then some of these miners were absolute scum anyway, u know, with dropping concrete blocks on taxis taking miners who wanted to work to work. go fuck yourself and your communist socialist pinko liberal retarded cock sucking panda shagging minyans.
09phillt 1 year ago
@09phillt power stations use oil because thatcher changed her energy policy to what was cheap AT THE TIME and is now the MOST EXPENSIVE. she wilfully chose to destroy both local demand and supply. that is the only reason there are less coal power stations now. it cost more to pay severence, dole money and regeneration funds for areas than it did to subsidise secure energy production for this country, a minority of incidents can't be used to justify economic vandalism. clueless sun-reading idiot.

Sadly. Thatchers lasting legacy remains. With the aid of the right wing media, the Unions remain public enemy number 1. One day soon, the unions will rise from these dark days and the working man will see through the thin facade of right wing dogma

@superfev1Yes I will and thank you for this important chapter in history. The sacrifice and sheer guts and determination of those men and their families has never been matched since. The fight goes on though for a fairer world and we must never ever give in.

@anwarsat Truth itself has a history and the context in which history is recited has always to do with facts half truths and lies. Just because it fits neatly with the borders of your imagination of the parameters of what is or could be does not make it truth.

How does going on strike save your job - why not buy the mines yourself and put up with militant miners wasting your money. Long Live Thatch.
deathtotheunions 2 years ago
@deathtotheunions Yeah because the working class are just drowning in money to buy mines with thanks to fascists like Thatcher. How dare they try to stand up for their rights, they deserved to be illegally spied on and subjected to violent oppression.
amhemsley 2 years ago
5 million lefties can all put £100 each in the pot - but of course socialism is theft so you expect others to pay for it dont you ??? - As for their rights to stop people going to work - yea right.
deathtotheunions 2 years ago
@deathtotheunions Most people don't have £100 spare to pay, they barely get enough to feed themselves and keep a roof over their heads because of bosses lining their pockets with workers money. And socialism is not theft, it's putting a stop to the theft of our labour and jobs by capitalist parasites like Thatcher.
amhemsley 2 years ago
so again you refuse to put your money where your mouth is but expect others to pay for your lifestyle - get real - oh yes and then you go on strike again and again and again - you just dont understand why so many people said DEATH TO THE UNIONS.
deathtotheunions 2 years ago
@deathtotheunions : I've just watched an old Channel 4 documentary about the strike.
What a leader Thatcher was. I didn't agree with a lot of her politics, but what a person.
Compare her gritty leadership to Tony Blair being interviewed by Fern Britton about the Iraq war. Poor Tony; so concerned about how history would judge him and then he forgets to make history (except for all the wrong reasons)!
t0mme1981 2 years ago
Unions have fought for safe working conditions, fair pay, an end to any kind of discrinination in the workplace, the right not to be sacked on a whim, an end to bullying by bosses or work colleagues, etc etc.
Basically Unions have ensured that you can go to work safely and without prejudice, and get paid fairly for what you do.
These conditions would NOT have been in place without Union activism, and yet you say "death to the Unions"?
Do you really want an end to what the Unions have won?
Scotsovertheborder 2 years ago
So it`s okay when unions stop people going to work, send them to Coventry for standing up to the executive and force them to give subs to a labour party run by commies - yea right.
deathtotheunions 2 years ago
You need to read more - the Labour Party has NEVER been run by Communists.
Trades Unions are mererly the organised representatives of working people, if you don't want to be part of a Union you have no right to the benefits gained by them.
If Thatcher has one real legacy it's the legitimisation fo greed and self-interest, I hear a lot of bleating about an individual's rights but I also see an ignorance of resposibilities as a part of society, and yes there is such a thing.

Problem I have with Trade Unionists and Socialist Revolutionaries is they are only concerned with themselves & their dispute.
Look at all the people in this vid. If they really believed in solidarity & a better way of life they'd have involved themselves politically AFTER.
If they & their supporters REALLY believed we'd have had a Labour govt instead of 18 yrs of Tories.

You have to wonder why the State in Britain decided to shut down productive labour. They replaced honest work with Financial Services and look where it's got us. TEH RBS. The current recession is a direct result of Britain not making anything useful--no mining--no cars--no steel. Thatcher obliterated the best part of our blessed plot.
mcadder74 2 years ago 2
it was the Scargill and his thugs that did for the mining industry - Scargill wanted to use the economic power of the miners to bully everyone in this country and to dictate communist policies to the government - the government was elected to run the country, not Scargill and his thugs. it was a pity, but there it is - I would rather have no mining industry and live in a country where the rule of law prevails and the elected governement is in charge not a bunch of thugs and bullies

Now our finance based economy is screwed because we no longer have a worthwhile British manufacturing base.

rising up the ranks as you put it will not make the manufacturing class disappear or the cleaning lady or guy on a production line boxing fish fingers disappear. So we have to protect working people from exploitation from the business class, the greedy and insecure buisness owners who use money to build lives.
Never can we leave the lives of workers in the hands of business owners ever again, they had their opportunity and blew it. Eventually laws were created to protect people from them, byee
bamyai 2 years ago 2
The reason working class people have risen "up the ranks" as you put it Benny is not because of the 'rich' or the right wing or tory politicians suddenly showing empathy and deciding to share profits with the people who have created the wealth for them in the first place. No, working people have had to fight long and hard and die for the right to have wealth distributed to them and its still not working the way it can. There will always be working class people manufacturing

Do you honestly think the miners supported Scargill's Marxist view? No, they were just working men who wanted to keep their jobs. But likewise, scabs are not soulless beings. I'm sure many could see the writing on the wall, they had families to feed as well you know.

How many of them voted for him?

So Scargill and his Stalin-admiring associates can change the government over the wishes of the people?
Is that where you are leading?
Are you serious?
What's the point of voting then?

Trota: the wishes of the people? which people? the 20% of the electorate who voted for thatcher, or the people who lived and worked in the communities this film discusses? the police used vicious violence against honest, working people on her orders. that is not democracy. get real

The miners' leader Scargill had made it clear he was going to use this conflict to change an elected government.
At that moment, it ceased to be just a question of pits and jobs.

what amazes me is that these miners were treated like scum by that bitch thatcher when all they wanted was to save their jobs they were not scum they were just good hard working people.and the police were nothing but hired fascist thugs a bit like moseleys blackshirts.
