This video compared to her newer interpretation is a good example of how musicians grow and improve with time; if you haven't heard the later version, listen to it and you'll know what I'm talking about.
It's an interesting Q that Tique 06 posits. Perhaps it's the undying and loving (albeit strict) support that the arts and music receive in these societies. Cuba is another amazing example.
What makes the Russian school of piano so amazingly special?
I find they bring out the full potential of the instrument no matter the size of the player in some cases - see Oxana Mikhailoff for example - If you can get a good recording you'll hear a slight looking woman make all the sounds and more. Pure pleasure!
@chorizoalegre Russians are my favorite pianists. Look up Oxana Mikhailoff for another phenomenal Russian woman who I wish there was more of (I feel blessed to have been at her Carnegie (Weill) Hall debut. Breathtaking is an understatement.

LOL. Technique? So what? This piece is void of any emotion. Pure trash. My neighbor's kid plays it every Halloween. He's only 17 and plays it way better too. You just like her playing it because she is a blond. Ha.
@vahagnini I am at that level where ive done grade 8. Im playing rachmaninoff preludes/ Im just a beginner and only been playing 7 years. 4 years of serios playing. I will keep trying to get this good. But if I do not , I can still enjoy playing :)
@31557600 ive been playing for 2 years and i was thrown straight away into chopin xd now ive started rachmaninoff , ive a grade 8 standard for like my playing and tecnique but my problem is i just will never read its all emory xD im hoping that ill get thig good within the next 2-3 years but damn shes just so yeah insane
@VanargrandsEnd Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. I mean, sure, playing things by memory is alright, but knowing how to read is quite an integral part of really getting good. I would honestly suggest that you stop just memorizing pieces and learn how to read music. You will be much better off in the end if you learn how to really read music, not just playing by memory or finger positions!
@199022008 i never said i couldn't sight read i just i am really i stress the word "really" lazy when it comes to reading, though in the last few weeks or so ive just grown to love the idea of not knowing how its going to sound till you play/read it for yourself im starting to go on that journey, i never use those finger positions i never found it that complex except in fantasia impromptu BLAH, but point taken cheers, sorry it took ages for me to reply i actually never noticed i had a message
@VanargrandsEnd you know, people talk a lot more than they do. Can you actually perform any of those pieces or have them memorized right now? It's one thing to memorize them and another to perform them for people to enjoy.
'Cause most Youtube users are only allowed to upload the videos shorter than 10mins, so this video isn't complete. The original piece should be about 15mins.
Congratulations! I don't have words to describe how I felt after listening to you playing. I just hope someday I can play as precisely and beautifully as you do.
I feel bad because I can't understand this at all... I love Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninov but I don't understand this piece at all I don't get it...
Totentanz is a paraphrase on "Dies Irae," which is based on a Gregorian chant that composers have occasionally used in their music. Rachmaninov uses it in Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Listen to an orchestrated version. I suggest looking up "Enrico Pace Totentanz" or "Argerich Barenboim Totentanz" in the YouTube search bar and listen to those.
Valentina, you should upload a better quality video for this piece. Totentanz is a fantastic piece; one should respect it so by putting up a decent quality video. Love your playing!!
i´m surprised by the long of her fingers, this interpretation is magic, i just can not stop listen to it every day and sometimes two or three straight times, she is beatiful as well, lizst an rachmaninoff, my favourite composers......

I'm not sure if she is a vampire, all i know is the interpretation and the piece itself are at the edge of supernatural matters, i can not imagine what was franz thinking while writing this marvel, and valentina, well, she is amazing......
i don't know what people are raving about... the tempo's for some of the variations are out of character for this piece, there are many inaccurate rhythms, wrong notes and minimal use of pedal used in this performance.

This great song. She plays as good as Franz Lizst. Her technique is astonishing, and has no peer. If Valentina had been a pupil of Liszt, I think he would be truly stunned. Who plays with more authority than her?
Valentina, you're my greates living hero in piano history! Please come to Norway! I adore you so much <3 Your playing gives me goosebumps, you're so skilled and adding your interpretations and all the emotion you put into it... Your performances are always breathtaking.
a great performance that should be on DVD

only a madman like liszt could have composed it, and only someone like her could play it, seems so stange and beautiful.
