Keith Moon's motion was due to the fact that he was deciding what note to play on-the-fly. It is hard to be economical, when you haven't decided what note your are going to play 2-3 notes from now. When playing like this, one is basically reducing the number of available notes that can be played as ones arm moves on a trajectory (at some point you play the only note that can be played). What appears to be excessive motion, is the act of holding open possibilities for more notes.
You can defiantly play the notes by keith but in order to do a proper cover you must be drunk off your ass and make funny faces as you spin around on the kit and bend really close to the drums to the point where you almost hit them :P
Fantastic stuff mate, it's really only when you see stuff in isolation like this that us non musicians can start to appreciate just what an amazing contribution Keith made. More please!
Bravo, great job. Not only in how well match the drum part, but in your feel for it. You captured Keith's amazing ability to "lightly" POUND the drums. Once again, great touch!
that was awesome. i wish i can play drums like you. bad news is i never own drums set. that's my dream. i know it's not too late to learn how to play drums. i only use anything i can hit...table, upsidedown empty pale..anything. nobody can play like keith moon or john bonham but you are really good. if i can play like you that gonna be enough for me. GOOD JOB MAN!
I don't know if anyone could play Keith note for note because of his excessive spontaneity but I doubt anyone has come closer than this. Great job of channeling one of the masters.
Keith Moon - One of Rocks most influential and colorful drummers. He's been gone a long time and is still missed. It's so nice that there are drummer like you out there that keep Keith's music and his spirit alive. Love the love - it is just as relevant today as was back in the day. Rock-on....
Ha. I saw this video months ago and wanted to watch it again then stumbled across it. Fine demonstration, close up, of Keith Moons talent that I must say, you do very well. But, there is a far difference between imitation and creation. Moon created those moves, you merely mimicked them, albeit, very well.
there is a story that keith moon was having a real hard time getting the drumming in for won't get fooled again and that john bonham was sitting next to him at that session and giving him constant encouragement!!!!!!
You seem to play so.... casual for lack of a better term and make it look so easy (I know it isn't). Like you're just kind of takin it easy on the drums. Are you doing this intentionaly, like you're not playing quite as hard as you normaly would so you don't drown out the audio track? If you were playing this with a full band, would you be really killin the drums like Moonie did or is this the way you play? I mean, it sounds great and IMO is the best WGFA cover on Youtube. I'm just curious.
Thanks. It's just the way I play. I do hit them with a lot of force but it's not necessary to hit the drums overly hard so I don't. Hitting a drum or cymbal too hard will actually spoil the sound. There's a "sweet spot" where they sound good and hitting them harder won't make them sound any better.
Excellent musician mg4150. You played that as if Moon was sitting right next to you. That's what made the Who so great of a band. This is probably why all of the CSI programs uses The Who music. Simply outstanding Sir.
I am a Youtube cruiser. I seek out what I believe is true talent. You sir possess that talent. I am also a musician and recognize that in order to imitate a technician like Keith Moon it takes more than ability. It's a feeling. Thank you posting this video
Wow, found it, I thought you had taken this version off as I couldn't find it for a couple of days. You play this brilliant and it has helped me enormously with working it out for our set, I more or less play it your way as there ain't much good footage of Moony available. Nice one mate - you captuered what most fail to achieve and that's not just the ability to play it but add the right feel to it and the two have got to be there for it to work properly
brilliant this is one vid i wont get fed up with looking at. there are some great drum kits around gretch. hayman. rogers. ect can we have some more please

That was a brilliant cover! You perfectly captured Keith Moons "spirit" in your playing. I'm not sure I'd be able to tell the diffrence between your playing and his! Keith Moon said just before he died "I'm still the best Keith Moon type drummer in the world." Well he has got some stiff competition from you!

Wow!!!That was nice! Moon the Loon would be very proud! I've been playing for 40yrs,I couldn't even come close. If you would've destroyed your kit-or your bass drum would've exploded,I would have swore Moony was back from the dead!!!Nice job!!!Keep playin!
i have never met pete townshend but would like to share what a gent he is about 4 years ago i was feeling down i decided to write him,it was not a fan letter either not knowing his address i put pt of the who .weeks later i got a nice handwritten letter by him, plus chritmas cards over a 2 year period !pete if you read this thanks again.
I've always admired drummers who set out to "reproduce" a song and then do it. Bermuda Schwartz of Weird Al fame comes to mind. Ha ha. But seriously, he has a gift for emulation. As far as the studio version of this song goes, I think you DID nail it note for note. Very nice.
You more than captured the feel of that one. You kicked it's ass. Mooney would be proud! You have tons of talent and your passion for the music shines through. It's a real pleasure to watch your videos. All of them. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, terrific! It seems you never hit the 4th tom (2nd floor tom) until about 6:30, and even then, not much after that. That's intersting, as Keith had a giant slew of toms by this time (at least live). However, it seems like you are hitting tons of cymbals. What is your cymbal setup? Also, are you working the hats on your right side? Do you even have hats (Keith stopped using them live at some point, I believe)?
I'm 58, my teenage years being the exact "Beatle" years, 1963 to 1969. I grew up with the fab four, The Who, Kinks, The Stones etc.......Next year,I'm seeing Neil Young in January, Leonard Cohen in Feb and The Who in March, all at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre!! Bring on 2009!!!

You have that Nick Mason (Pink Floyd, for those of you that don't know who he is) kind of style in that you actualy play the drums, not just keeping time, and you make it look so bloody easy!

Excellent job, but did you play over Moons drums or edit them out somehow? I may be wrong, but it does sound like you played along with the recording. Nice job anyway, just curious.
I have to say you're really really good but it's hard to read some of these things saying that it's like watching Keith Moon. I'm sorry but nobody will ever compare to Keith Moon, not even Zak Starkey... who is currently touring with The Who.
Very cool. Moon's flow was ALWAYS different so it's irrelevant to copy.Have to say though,I've been analyzing his playing for over fourty years and STILL pick up on things I missed. Amazing for a drummer who was not technically proficient but incredibly "inventive" in his phrasing. Your video really shows whats going on and I found it instructive. We never really got great close ups of him behind the drums for a majority of the songs.Hey,if you didn't chart this... you have a great memory!!!
WOW. You should try out for a professional band. As mentioned, if The Who tours again, they need to look you up! This is so awesome I've returned to this post 5x now.
wow dude, really, keith would be proud and same as below, i was reading comments, and forgot it wasnt keith playing! awesome dude, reveal yourself, im thiking your the stig :P
You must be Keith's son or something! Great work man! :D

I have to say you're really really good but it's hard to read some of these things saying that it's like watching Keith Moon. I'm sorry but nobody will ever compare to Keith Moon, not even Zak Starkey... who is currently touring with The Who.

You rock!

Thanks! Just from memory. No charts or tabs. I just play by ear.
I guess after many years of listening, it gets ingrained into my brain, what's left of it anyway!!! LOL

WOW. I was going to comment, but words can not describe. It was like watching Moonie himself. Simply incredible.

WOW. You should try out for a professional band. As mentioned, if The Who tours again, they need to look you up! This is so awesome I've returned to this post 5x now.

Dude thats amazing.
I got the (supposed) tabs for this in a book of classic rock, but watching you is so much easier than trying to read it note by note.

"Controlled Chaos" No shit, Moonie was unrepeatable but you have done a superb job, I tip my hat to you bud...
If THE WHO ever go back out on the road, look this guy up!
