  • What's the matter with these people? Don't they want to be civilized?

Who wants to live the life of a hairy, unwashed savage? Your hand always at the sword hilt?

Better to surrender to the restraints and comforts of Roman rule. I mean...at least they had baths.

  • @farmerne roman rule wasn't so great for the female half of the population

  • @farmerne to people like you its being 'civilised' but to the britons it was their freedom, traditions, beliefs and everything they valued. if some strange people you've never heard of came to you and tried to take over your government with no claim to it you wouldnt like that either. dont talk about what you dont understand. do some research first.

  • Boudica I believe is a female version of William Wallace. No Offense, But she is an amazing warrior and a tough one too because she had the guts to face the migthy roman empire

  • @Phenomenalhardy i agree 100% i love braveheart

  • lol but she still got her ass kicked by rome

  • I LOVE BOUDICA. THE BEST WOMAN OF ALL TIMES

  • Just like America in the 19th century.

  • Does the history channel cite her as the inspiration for Red Sonja? I can't remember, I think it did.

  • Cleopatra? Are you kidding?! Unlike her Boudica actually fought the romans instead of whoring out her country to them!!!

  • @Herbstgespenst: Egypt had been open for business long before that. The Ptolemies (Cleopatra's line) were Greek, before them was the Persian empire. Egyptian rulers had local control but still payed a low tax rate to Persia.

Cleopatra was trained as a diplomat, not a warrior. Boudicca would have eaten her for breakfast.

  • @EverythingAustin uhm yeah. thats basically what i said.

  • @Herbstgespenst: Not quite but close. Poor dead queen always gets a bad rap. Do what you gotta do.

  • She shouldn't have attacked uphill, i would have defended on a mountain or something.

  • She was indeed a great woman, but I like Cleopatra better

  • Boudicca and her army look that they are badly in need of a bath and a haircut.

I just don't understand it---don't these people WANT to be civilized?

  • well depedns who gets to be boss

  • Read up on ancient Celtic culture. As far as these people were concerned, they were civilized, and the Romans were plundering barbarians ransacking their

land and raping their women. Celtic men

and women were careful of their appearance; this film does not do credit

to that. However, the long spears, light

chariot and blue woad dye are true to

    fact.

  • Its a big place the parallel, but to wonder, if the Britons had defeated roman rule and the romans had left, would we all now live in the Celtic isles? how would the isles be today, Scotland, Cornwall, Ireland, I suppose England and wales would not be about! The isle of man? No British empire! It would be a different place alright. Just a thing, when the last stand of the Britons comes up, i think about this and the world, with out the roman war machine. Its also very sad indeed. gods bless.

  • probably not the romans were defeated by the anglo saxons and gave england its name derived from angle-land at least i think it did . mind you if the britons were powerful enough to defeat the romans then maybe they would have defeated the anglo saxons who knows you could be right

  • u really think the celts wouldn;t have built a british empire, its not the blood but the circumstances, also plenty of celts were involved in the british empire, irish, welsh, scottish all involved

  • Whos to know, The celtic isles, thats the ???

for its all speculation, as i was at wonder what the isles would be like! if the romans were forced back to there own lands.

simple as that, in return how the world would be today! just a thought.

  • the english are sort of celts aswell. We were all celts, just england got invaded by the romans. Were all got the same blood in us,

  • scotland has its fair share of angles from northumbira when it got partioned, but the english do have more german elements to it, but yes most british dna even english is celtic, but the tan thing suggests pictish blood, i thought the celts were famed for being pale, while the picts were swarthy

  • boudicca poisoned herself with her daughters who had been raped by the romans

the romans tried to take over britain and yes they did succeed

(btw ur figures on 100,000 britons against 10,000 romans is highly inacurrate. if anything it was the other way around)

  • I don't understand it. Why live as a hairy unwashed savage? Don't these people want to be civilized?

  • The Romans were going to take their children away to be slaves.

  • Because being "civilized" is not worthy when you are not free and you're not recognized as a citizen, but something like, what you say: "a savage".

  • Imagine for a minute that exists another nation that is "more civilized" than yours... and it comes and turns you and all your family and friends into slaves. In the very first moment you complain, that's what they're going to tell you: "What? Why don't you want to be civilized? Why do you want to live as a savage?". And you've got your answer there owo. Well, that's what I think owo.

  • Nope and we still don't ^^

  • Speaking as a Celt, I like my bushy red hair. And my piercing blue eyes. And that fact that I don't look like short, faggy little Roman.

    Know what I mean..?

PS -- Boudica was dah bomb.

  • i wonder if my family is roman.I live in northwest engalnd,my family can be taced back their to 1066,well my last name can.i have dark brown hair,green/brown eyes, get a really dark tann in the sumemr coz i work outside.5ft10,i wonder if i'm more roman then celtic or anglo saxon, what ever it is i'm proud to be british with all our history

  • best line--"We are a part of each other." That pep talk kicked Wallace's arse!

  • Let's not forget. All great civilizations only write about their victories and never about their losses. The real truth in probably exaggerated ten-fold. So I would say the Romans didn't kick ass, the truth was probably the true Britons fled to Wales into the mountains etc. I don't know but that's probably closer to the truth?

  • Even when outnembered 20 to 1, the romans kicked the britons' asses.

Never ler a woman lead an army.

  • The Romans fought well for an army of mercs, slaves under blackmail and conscripts. I take my hat off to them, they brought brilliant ideas but let's not forget, you can take the man out of Briton, but you can't take the Briton out of the man. It took another 100 years after Caesar before they came back. The Britons obviously sent them off first time to learn how to fight. lol

  • What you mean came back? They went there once, and stayed there for centuries, only leaving and never returning when the whole roman empire started to crumbe. The britons could never do shit. They outnumbered the romans 20 to 1(200,000 britons against 10,000 romans according to Discovery Civilazation) in the last battle, and they still got their asses kicked.

  • You should also read up on some of the Britons' victories- the Silures in Wales heavily defeated the Roman Second Legion and the Caledonians in Scotland resisted fiercely forcing the Romans to build Hadrian's war. During Boudicca's revolt, most of the Ninth legion were wiped out and 70,000 Roman citizens and soldiers were said to have perished. The Britons only lost the final battle because they trampled themselves, and the army they were against had better training and equipment.

  • Also, 200,000 Britons is an exageration.

  • No Caesar lead 2 invasions of Briton. The first invasion was abandoned because it was too late in the season and the roman army wasnt planning on a full scale invasion and the second time the romans left because Caesar wanted to pursue his ambition of becoming emperor...Caesar kicked celtic ass on both occasions

  • you are wrong on the second occasion ceasar was emporror and had his troops live harmoniously with the britons, but wen ceasar died his son decided that briton would be better under roman rule and decided to invade

  • No i just did this topic in Ancient history Caesar never made it to emperor

  • The Roman Army at this stage was fully professional. Paid volunteers.

  • I dunno, Joan of Arc didn't do too badly.

  • Yes you're right, about 100 years later.

  • never lead a pitched battle vs enemy superior in quality of armor/training.

  • stupid woman who never use her brain and only her brawn. so many people to tried to tackle the roman armies wearing no protection, pure waste of human lives when she could perfectly well win with so many people.

  • They made a show off half a page of Livy. Completely ridicules and pandering to those who like Xena. I don't even recall her fighting in the account.

  • Does anyone knows the name of the actress who plays Boudicca ?

  • Her name is Charlotte Comer

  • all right thanks

  • the powerfull romans shall punish these barbarians

  • boudica shaved her arm pit looooooooool

  • Mel Gibson is Filming a Movie About Boudica!!

  • YAY! SHE NEEDS TO BE HEARD ABOUT!

  • mel gibson? he's the most anti-english yank twat i can think of... i sincerely hope you're wrong

  • I dont think hes anti english? what makes you say that - dont tell me its braveheart... its a movie, just a movie. not a documentary, a movie.

  • He was born in the US but moved to Australia with his family when he was 12. He's a citizen of both the US and Australia. He sas he considers himself an Australian. Then again, he says he's a Roman Catholic too. We all know about that, the hypocrite.

  • Knowing Mel Gibsons regard for historical accuracy ,he'll probably have Paris Hilton as Boudicca and Christopher Biggins as Seutonius Paulinus

  • Paris Hilton does not have the dramatic depth to play an outraged woman so angry she would marshal the natives to drive an occupying force off her land; after being flogged, or having her kids raped.

  • Quite so. I notice however that you didnt rate Christpher Biggins chances of satisfactorily portraying Seutonius . How do you think he would manage?

  • I have to admit I am less familiar with Christopher Biggins. He may not be the media hound that Ms Hilton is.

  • She was an Amazing woman...she is someone I look up too theres not very many great female role models today. She is my hero!

  • Is your idea of a hero, a person that kills women and children, I know its not mine. The only thing Boudica did for her people was to bring more suffering and death, your hero was a failure even when she out numbered the Romans 20 to 1, she probably took her own life knowing the Brits would have done it for her.

  • she believed in using overwhelming force. Unfortunately, it didn't work in this case as it had in previous battles.

  • why didnt she divide her forces into small mobile, highly destructive guerilla units? she could have picked at the Romans till they went crazy ! celtic mosquitos stinging everywhere!

  • like the insurgents are now deafeating the US war machine...

  • Where?

  • the Savage boys in the movie are hot .

  • That's great. She was an amazing woman.

  • whats with the american accent?

  • I am stunned at our similarity. I'm torn whether going into film or archeology, because they are my two favorite topics. Thanks for the tip!

  • That's great. I've always found that if you want to something then do it. If you want to be a filmmaker, make films. If you want to be an archaeologist, then dig. It really is two different worlds but if you have a strength in one then go for it. They are both great subjects.

  • A piece you *edited*?! Wow. How'd you get into that? I'd like to some how get into national geographic, but I don't know where to even start!

  • I studied filmmaking and have a love of history and got into documentary television. Follow your passion.
