@TNewfy How can you get on this channel are disrespect Karen Carpenter that way? Her death was such a terrible loss and tragedy!!!! She was a very special lady and deserves to be honored with respect and if you can't do that then stay off the channels that have her music on them.....her true friends and fans would like you to just go away!!!!!!
thanks to a reporter saying/printing she looked fat at a show ,started her delusion.she looked great at the time ,but who cares about looks .music sould be listened to with your eyes closed.wish she hadden of died.
@theonemodifier Actually, the reporter called Richard "chubby," not Karen. But for the TV bio the writers changed that around. In the early 70s, a male jounrnalist would not have taken a female to task for her weight.
I would like the people who disliked this song try to perform music themselves and then let others critique them. This woman was a true musician and vocalist.
To all the weird people who took offence to my comment simply because I thought the cap lock was off when it was on and on when it was off,you just couldn't wait to find a reason to troll on someone could you?I wasn't yelling or trying to make any kind of profound statement,I simply made a mistake with my typing and when I discovered it ,didn't even think it was worth the time writing all over again being it was so trivial That's it.It wasn't what you thought it was at all.,but you HAD to troll.

god, for some reason i just LOVE this video. It's sweet, bittersweet, goofy and beautiful all at once. I can see a Karen that we never got to see in all the ridiculous network specials and big concerts. And that guy playing harmonica - you can't HEAR the harmonica. Cracks me up every time I watch it. Wish she had been able to get help before she died.
WOW. Seriously, that is just amazing. What a voice. I wish she had been able to just stay where she was happiest, back behind the drumset. RIP, Karen. Thanks for all your songbirding and making our world a more beautiful place through your voice and presence..

@OzTvAgogo It's soooo SAD but, when she died, she weighed a MERE 108 pounds. I am, personally 4'8" . I weigh aboput 114#. That is small, but she was at least a head taller than I! Anorexia had taken its toll on a BEAUTIFUL/ TALENTED lady! Bless her, she thought she was "fat" and she was NOT!

@pete9124 No, she didn't have a lisp, but her brother Richard did. This is just an old video with poor sound quality. Listen to the original; she sounds fine.
This is a much better version of Rainy Days with Karen behind the drums where she belonged.Apparently this was actually live supposedly and not lip synced.Sure they had some terrible hits like Superstar and For All We Know, but they also had so many good songs and weren't the drizzle group that many people try to claim. The naturalness of her voice still hasn't been duplicated by anyone else today and their harmonies were better than Queen's,Beach Boys,Yes or anyone else still to this day.

Both were equal in talent. I was saddened that Friday in 1982 when she died. I hire musicians for my church. If they were still in business, I would hire them.
if people weren't too harsh mocking her about her weight she would never go to extreme trying to please everybody, she was a great singer and a big loss in entertainment industry and her music are timeless and would always be played over and over
You all can just stop. She is Karen Carpenter. There is a reason we have legends. Barbra Streisand, Helen Reddy, and Karen Carpenter. Her voice speaks for it's self.
Apparently Karen took "epicat" which is a liquid that induces vomiting (it's used in hospitals for poison victims). Epicat causes severe trauma to the heart and hence Karen died of a heart attack from it at home, after she'd begun eating again. Even though she had begun eating again, the epicat had caused severe damage to her heart and she died as a result.
The recording was probably sped up for PAL TV broadcast in Australia... we run at 25 fps as opposed to 24 fps for film... so there is a slight increase in pitch and speed.
She died of anorexia...it wasn't perfect for her! She felt inadequate, unloved, lonely and out of control. It is quite sad. TO have the adoration of millions, to have such a god given talent, money and when it's all said and done, none of that stuff matters! It's so sad!
I don't know. This time of year with the holidays around the corner. Makes for tears. She seemed so tormented. I can see it in her eyes. I wish I knew her. An angel lost. She's immortal now, enshrined here for us. Godspeed Karen. We miss you so.

Tormented? From what? Born into a nice family, talented brother, a million dollar voice and cute looking on top of it all, cmon, if anything life might have been too good for her and she thats what she couldnt cope with.
@streltski88 actually that was not the case at all. She felt unloved and lonely in her family. Richard was the golden boy, everyone was focused on Richard because he's so talented. Their mother always praised Richard, even on their TV special. The producer was surprised because Karen was the star of the show but still she didn't notice how good her daughter is. When she was hospitalized, the doctor even told her mother to "make Karen feel loved, hug her. tell her she loved her."
Yeah.. I think just felt hopeless. She was very unhappy when they made her go to the front and sing instead of singing while drumming. She was also upset that she couldn't choose songs she would sing even the covers, Richard always picked them. I think she felt her weight was the only thing she could control or something. Perhaps she was emotionally weak?

Alright, I shouldn't have talked out of my ass since I didn't know her personally and therefore had no idea what was going on. I guess we just have to understand that celebrities are not super human and can get into trouble just like the untalented. I do love her singing and am a secret Carpenters fan, though I could never admit it to my friends, haha!
Haha! Me too! I mean some know I have been listening to The Carpenters lately but they didn't know I've been addicted to it. Her voice is just amazing. I began listening a few weeks ago, when I remembered we had an old Carpenters CD which I couldn't find.
In many ways, Richard WAS the more talented of the two; but Karen was the star as far as the public was concerned.
In any event, Karen Carpenter was an adult, so ultimately she had the responsibility of taking care of herself. There was only so much the family could do to get her treated, she had to want to be helped.
I disagree.. Richard was very good with the piano, arranging, producing, songwriting but he is musically talented and I consider a prodigy but Karen was just as equally talented. She was one of the most amazing vocalists in the world, was an excellent drummer, played the accordion and flute, also played the bass in only 2 tracks though. And the fact that she started singing and drumming only in her teens proves she's got tons of natural talent. She can sing well while drumming too.

@streltski88 You should at least have an inkling of what you're talking about before you "speak up." It IS a free country, but c'mon, her "torment" has been the subject of endless debate and inquiry for decades now and you blow it all off with one run-on, poorly structured, gramatically incorrect sentence that trivializes the tragedy of her illness and death. Do some research on the nice family, talented brother and anorexia and get back to us. Okay?
When Karen passed away I was pregnant with my daughter A. , I remember sitting up straight during the night ( Europe), thinking "Karen Carpenter , Richard Carpenter.....then I felt restless, and went back to sleep again" Next morning I woke up hearing Sweet Sweet Smile on the radio, and when the song ended, a voice said" Karen Carpenter, leadsinger and drummer of Carpenters, passed away in her elderly home in Downey CA., due to the results of Anorexia Nervosa at the age of 32.....
Personally Im getting a little tired of seeing 'r.i.p.', people should just take a few seconds of their precious time to write out 'rest in peace' , its so much more nicer than 'rip.' You see 'rip' on Halloween decorations, its so cheap, fuck 'rip'!
....fondest memories as a young child...swooning to this and others....xox...miss the chance to hear her...truly sad when she died...i remember my mother crying..:(
I was only 5 years old when Karen passed away. but as a man ( 31 years old ) now I would have married her in a flat second.. I have been a fan of the Carpenters since I was 15.. I have heard songs like this a million times and still it never gets old.. Karen was a truely talented lady.. May she rest in peace.. she truely is immortal...

she should have met my dad, a real love is what she wanted and he would have delievered, she would have dug him, mensa I.Q. nice, good looking and a world class weight lifter
@huntersingle She was very picky when it came to men and had a whole list of qualities she wanted in a man, the foremost being that he be independently wealthy so he wouldn't be a gold-digger. The man she married, Tom Burris, SEEMED to have all these qualities- but the fancy cars and boats were a sham; he was living beyond his means and WAS a gold-digger. He drained her bank accounts, lied about having a vasectomy even though he knew she wanted children, and was a total jerk to her.
Such a beautiful woman. So talented. What's funny is that she came to us from heaven, became a star, and went back to heaven :) "A Star on Earth, A Star in Heaven" Love you, Karen.
Esta canción es una de las mas lindas que ellos pudierón grabar ...ella trasmitia sus sentimeintos en cada canción, Tenia una voz preciosa.....la mas linda y dulce que he escuchado........
i miss Karen soo much, though i never met her...but still i love her, hayyyyy...i wish there's someone blessed voice like karen, she still my idol, it'll not change...
a song about drugs and alcohol? - are you nuts! The Carpenters were real musicians and squeeky clean in their music. Just take the words of their songs at face value - they were great musicians with no "secret message".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well, the reason karen had a eating disorder is she felt she had no control in her life, her weight was something she could control. richard was the big brother and he considered himself the leader of the carpenters. he did not let karen release her solo album, because he had no impute it was something she did for herself she tried to spred her wings but he draged her back and she was dead within a few years. she may still be here today if he had had not held her back.

Richard is a great organizer. He dedicated his life to the group and I can see some real nice music. He looked after his little sister like no one in filthy Hollywood could. Long live Richard and you did a great job for your little sister. Karen lived a great life too bad her marriage didn't work out.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Thank you so much for you words! It's offends to see people blaming Richard in Karen's tragedy. He loved his sister more than anything, and I'm sure he had always wished her the best... But what could've he done, if she was too stubborn to admit she was sick and to receive medical treatment, untill it was too late....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Karen was unhappy about her weight on and off since she was in grade school. She hid behind loose clothes and the drum traps. Richard was flat on his back when Karen went to NY to do the album. Karen was in relatively poor condition when she cut the tracks. Herb Alpert was the word on whether it got released or not, it takes a few bucks to let one fly. Sadly, Richard understood her natural range better that Phil did, but Ramone still did a good job producing it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Anorexia was barley a diagnosable syndrome in the late 70, if Richard and A&M had released her, she may have never made it to 83. I dont think she was as much concerned about making a solo career, as she was about not having Richard to work with; his future was in question due to the pills. She wanted to sing.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And what about the fact that Karen also was overprotecting on her brother, while he was trying to date women? Please, don't try to portray Richard as some kind of monster and Karen as weak defenceless little girl, who couldn't stand up for herself. Non of them was perfect. As for her solo album - it wasn't very good, it would't have sold out anyway, and Richard knew that, as much as the people from A&M did. That's the only reason, why all of them tried to prevent this experience from Karen...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The fact is that Richard protected Karens honor as a family member. What he did was made sure she would not be exploited. Destiny is such that it was time for her to leave us. Richard had nothing to do with it and God had every thing to do with it. Karen was at the top of the world and her health and destiny was such that we loved her so much and to blame it on Richard was the easiest thing to do but not the correct thing to do. Richard loved her more than any one could ever imagine.
Just think about Eric Clapton and how some short sigted fans thought that he tried to make money from his sons Connors death this is the same theme for shortsighted vindictive fans. Destiny and gods reach is way beyond any human being. Watch history and judge for your self. Love you all. Love the Carpenters and their music forever.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think, whether we blame Richard or not, he has already blamed himself enough. In these cases, when you loose your loved one due to such a diseases like anorexia, alcoholism, drug adiction, ect, you always think there was something more you could have done and haven't done... I know it, because alcoholism took my father away from us... Although we did anything to help him out of this, it hasn't worked, and after he was gone we all thought we haven't done enough to save him...

if people weren't too harsh mocking her about her weight she would never go to extreme trying to please everybody, she was a great singer and a big loss in entertainment industry and her music are timeless and would always be played over and over

You all can just stop. She is Karen Carpenter. There is a reason we have legends. Barbra Streisand, Helen Reddy, and Karen Carpenter. Her voice speaks for it's self.
Bobby1t 2 years ago
Apparently Karen took "epicat" which is a liquid that induces vomiting (it's used in hospitals for poison victims). Epicat causes severe trauma to the heart and hence Karen died of a heart attack from it at home, after she'd begun eating again. Even though she had begun eating again, the epicat had caused severe damage to her heart and she died as a result.
vicdanafan44 2 years ago
It's actually "Syrup of ipecac."
She was also taking mega doses (incorrectly prescribed) of thyroid medicine which also did damage to her heart.
It's a complete tragedy.
Her voice sounds sped up here...the recording is too fast.
steveatl40 2 years ago
Hi Steve;
The recording was probably sped up for PAL TV broadcast in Australia... we run at 25 fps as opposed to 24 fps for film... so there is a slight increase in pitch and speed.

but how did she pass away? everything seemed perfect for her...
renez100 2 years ago

When she was hospitalized, the doctor even told her mother to "make Karen feel loved, hug her. tell her she loved her."
benjsinister 2 years ago
Well anyway, it is a shame she died young.

I do love her singing and am a secret Carpenters fan, though I could never admit it to my friends, haha!
streltski88 2 years ago
Haha!

Personally Im getting a little tired of seeing 'r.i.p.', people should just take a few seconds of their precious time to write out 'rest in peace' , its so much more nicer than 'rip.' You see 'rip' on Halloween decorations, its so cheap, fuck 'rip'!

huntersingle 2 years ago
@huntersingle She was very picky when it came to men and had a whole list of qualities she wanted in a man, the foremost being that he be independently wealthy so he wouldn't be a gold-digger. The man she married, Tom Burris, SEEMED to have all these qualities- but the fancy cars and boats were a sham; he was living beyond his means and WAS a gold-digger. He drained her bank accounts, lied about having a vasectomy even though he knew she wanted children, and was a total jerk to her.

this song could be about drugs or alcohol. Listen to the chorus:
"Funny but it seems I always wind up here with you
Its nice to know somebody loves me
Funny but it seems that its the only thing to do
To run and find the one who loves me"
It could also be just an ordinairy love song.
ruderkonge1976 2 years ago
a song about drugs and alcohol? - are you nuts! The Carpenters were real musicians and squeeky clean in their music. Just take the words of their songs at face value - they were great musicians with no "secret message".

well, the reason karen had a eating disorder is she felt she had no control in her life, her weight was something she could control. richard was the big brother and he considered himself the leader of the carpenters. he did not let karen release her solo album, because he had no impute it was something she did for herself she tried to spred her wings but he draged her back and she was dead within a few years. she may still be here today if he had had not held her back.
peace

Richard is a great organizer. He dedicated his life to the group and I can see some real nice music. He looked after his little sister like no one in filthy Hollywood could. Long live Richard and you did a great job for your little sister. Karen lived a great life too bad her marriage didn't work out.

Thank you so much for you words! It's offends to see people blaming Richard in Karen's tragedy. He loved his sister more than anything, and I'm sure he had always wished her the best... But what could've he done, if she was too stubborn to admit she was sick and to receive medical treatment, untill it was too late....

Anorexia was barley a diagnosable syndrome in the late 70, if Richard and A&M had released her, she may have never made it to 83. I dont think she was as much concerned about making a solo career, as she was about not having Richard to work with; his future was in question due to the pills. She wanted to sing.

Richard loved her more than any one could ever imagine.
golo5000 2 years ago
Just think about Eric Clapton and how some short sigted fans thought that he tried to make money from his sons Connors death this is the same theme for shortsighted vindictive fans. Destiny and gods reach is way beyond any human being. Watch history and judge for your self. Love you all. Love the Carpenters and their music forever.
