  • Seven people are deaf.

  • lllllllllllllllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddddoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • mt lindo

  • All the more bittersweett for herr untimely demise--thatt incredible voice with those uncanny lyrrics

  • A new CD has been released with all the Carpenter's hits, and there's a picture of Karen on the side.

  • 40 years later this song is just as beautiful and timeless.

  • Great drummer, Great singer!!

  • I dunno - she DOES look a little fat...

  • @TNewfy you must be kidding just to have thumbs and comments

  • @TNewfy

That is REALLY fucked up. how dare you... prick.

  • @TNewfy How can you get on this channel are disrespect Karen Carpenter that way? Her death was such a terrible loss and tragedy!!!! She was a very special lady and deserves to be honored with respect and if you can't do that then stay off the channels that have her music on them.....her true friends and fans would like you to just go away!!!!!!

  • thanks to a reporter saying/printing she looked fat at a show ,started her delusion.she looked great at the time ,but who cares about looks .music sould be listened to with your eyes closed.wish she hadden of died.

  • @theonemodifier Actually, the reporter called Richard "chubby," not Karen. But for the TV bio the writers changed that around. In the early 70s, a male jounrnalist would not have taken a female to task for her weight.

  • Amore R.I.P. :(

  • sniff snifff , can't describe the joy i feel in my soul !

  • Beautiful voice.......

  • I would like the people who disliked this song try to perform music themselves and then let others critique them. This woman was a true musician and vocalist.

  • I love you so KAREN you're an ANGEL

  • She was so talented! Love her music!

  • Yeah, I found it. Vevo has this in color HD. Too bad, I hate Vevo.

  • Havn't I seen this clip in somewhere?

  • one of the best from the "drummer who sings".

  • Great early footage. Before Karen was coaxed out from behind the drums and solo with her magnificent voice.

  • RIP Karen!!!!!!!!!! ♥

  • What a voice - incredible. She is a unique talent that has and will continue to stand the test of time. Few if any singers can evoke the emotional range that Karen could. God I miss her.

  • god, for some reason i just LOVE this video. It's sweet, bittersweet, goofy and beautiful all at once. I can see a Karen that we never got to see in all the ridiculous network specials and big concerts. And that guy playing harmonica - you can't HEAR the harmonica. Cracks me up every time I watch it. Wish she had been able to get help before she died.

  • WOW. Seriously, that is just amazing. What a voice. I wish she had been able to just stay where she was happiest, back behind the drumset. RIP, Karen. Thanks for all your songbirding and making our world a more beautiful place through your voice and presence..

  • whoa, just beautiful. Still sad that she tragically left us at such a young age.Thankful she is immortalized on video and this performance left me weeping. Today is a rainy day and a Monday. Befitting lyrics...meh. ☮♥♫

  • Karen singing AND playing drums.. perfect. When I hear her voice I always just relax and immerse myself. I wish I could sing her songs.

  • do yourself the best not to be poor.

  • @OzTvAgogo I HAVE THIS ON AN LP RIGHT BESIDE ME! I'M TALKING 33&1/3! Hee hee!

  • @OzTvAgogo It's soooo SAD but, when she died, she weighed a MERE 108 pounds. I am, personally 4'8" . I weigh aboput 114#. That is small, but she was at least a head taller than I! Anorexia had taken its toll on a BEAUTIFUL/ TALENTED lady! Bless her, she thought she was "fat" and she was NOT!

  • Shut the fuck up rematpac! You fucking creep!

  • She sang so well. Too bad she thought being a rocker was more important. Everyone wants what they cannot have sometimes. Tears the soul apart.

  • @Tarn1968 The Carpenters were international superstars (no pun intended).

  • @Tarn1968

Certainly big here in the UK. What superlatives can you say

about Karen that hasn`t already been said a thousand times?

Out of this world voice, beautiful person, tragic loss. I still feel so

deeply sad for her family even after all this time.

  • As a kid in the 70's, I remember 3 things in music, The Carpenters, Michael Jackson, and Styx !!!!! Karen just had that beautiful smooth voice that is unmatched. Allison Krauss Today has that one in a billion voice. Lady Gaga, Mariah, Miley just don't have it. RIP Karen- We miss you !!!

  • top voice... does she have lipthhh

  • @pete9124 No, she didn't have a lisp, but her brother Richard did. This is just an old video with poor sound quality. Listen to the original; she sounds fine.

  • It's lip-synched. But she still had a gorgeous voice.

  • I love Karen on drums...so much nicer than that goofy stuff they made her do later.

  • one of those singers with the most wondrous voice...

  • she certainly was a star on earth.

what person couldn't fall in love with her? add me to the long, long list.

  • Seven dumbass morons gave this a thumbs down. I have just lost another chunk of my dwindling faith in humanity.

  • The color version of this video features the recorded version of the song. That is a beautiful video. This, apparently, is a true live performance Even better! She was good!!

  • Oh Karen. I'm sitting here sobbing listening to you honey. You left us way too soon.

Your's was a voice of sweet beauty. No vocal gymnastics like the pop divas that have come along. No gyrations, just a gorgeous voice and earnest presentation.

You were so good, SO GOOD. I hope your devoted brother is doing well these days. Sweet dreams.

  • I heart the Carpenters!

  • We sure miss you Karen Carpenter.

  • What a memory, I haven't heard this for decades. Why isn't there more music like this? I really miss kind of music. I miss you Karen.

  • who does't love her?

  • beautiful sound

  • my fav ever rip karen miss ya xxxx

  • I am an Aussie and am proud she recorded this in Australia...

  • One of Karen's greatest performances. She breaks my heart with her low register and haunting reading of this song

  • Her voice was magnificent!!

  • She always sang from the heart.

  • The most beautiful of all....

  • That Drum fill at 2:54 is awesome. She holds the note out and goes all Keith Moon. You never hear anyone say Karen Carpenter is their fav drummer. Well I will say it right now. She is my fav drummer all time.( Sorry Ringo, Bonham, and Moon)

  • That fill was vicious. Another example of a drummer/singer who is awesome and gets little recognition is Levon Helm. His arms drum all by themselves, it seems.

  • @siddartha71 spoken like a true non drummer.....good job..;)

  • @sssup Check out "Karen Carpenter: Kickass Drummer."

  • @siddartha71 I agree! Most people wouldn't notice that. You have good ears!

  • @siddartha71 lol :) yes indeed she was.... a good drummer

  • @siddartha71

She has great feeling for the right fills in the right spaces.

  • @siddartha71 Obviously not a drummer....

  • @siddartha71 WRONG! Karen is top TWO with ME! LOL ... My hubby, when we were dating, played the drums so, admittedly, he was/IS my favorite! :-) Karen Carpenter is second. (Okay, I'm biased and have the fair-minded good sense to be honest about it and ADMIT it! LOL) The hubby, James, when he first saw this video, commented admirably about her, and I quote him, her "smoothness". ... Hugs and God bless!

  • Stunning and beautiful. The shadowy black and white footage adds a fitting poignancy to Karen's soulful performance of this classic pop-blues ballad.

  • What a beautiful beautiful woman......great performance, miss her a lot! I really can catch the energy at 3:00, as the song is ending, just a special lady.

    Lovely!

  • the carpenters are timeless. her voice and the story of the carpenters is addictive. we'll miss you!

  • Both were equal in talent. I was saddened that Friday in 1982 when she died. I hire musicians for my church. If they were still in business, I would hire them.

  • I used to joke around with my office mate about his

    alleged mental problem.

I told him its all in his head.

He said that's the worst place to have it.

  • This song reminds of when after partying on the weekend and I returned to work on Monday morning feeling down.

  • This speed makes it sound a half step higher for all those concerned with technicalities! Just had to post this!

  • karen had the voice of an angel !

  • WOW---Great video classic

Karen is fantastic ....the greatest female singer EVER-----

  • i love KC! thank u 4 the video! i saw the movie Superstar and it's a beautiful but at the same time a great movie about her.

    i'm sorry, i'm not a native speaker =/

    gracias por subir el video!

  • if people weren't too harsh mocking her about her weight she would never go to extreme trying to please everybody, she was a great singer and a big loss in entertainment industry and her music are timeless and would always be played over and over

  • and don't forget. She was a drummer at heart.

  • She was a great drummer too .

  • sheer class god bless you karen

  • exceptional woman!!!!

  • You all can just stop. She is Karen Carpenter. There is a reason we have legends. Barbra Streisand, Helen Reddy, and Karen Carpenter. Her voice speaks for it's self.

  • Apparently Karen took "epicat" which is a liquid that induces vomiting (it's used in hospitals for poison victims). Epicat causes severe trauma to the heart and hence Karen died of a heart attack from it at home, after she'd begun eating again. Even though she had begun eating again, the epicat had caused severe damage to her heart and she died as a result.

  • It's actually "Syrup of ipecac."

She was also taking mega doses (incorrectly prescribed) of thyroid medicine which also did damage to her heart.

    It's a complete tragedy.

Her voice sounds sped up here...the recording is too fast.

  • Hi Steve;

The recording was probably sped up for PAL TV broadcast in Australia... we run at 25 fps as opposed to 24 fps for film... so there is a slight increase in pitch and speed.

  • Lord I love her! And Lil Enos Burdette for writing this friggin song.

  • an unbeatable voice...awesome!

but how did she pass away? everything seemed perfect for her...

  • She died of anorexia...it wasn't perfect for her! She felt inadequate, unloved, lonely and out of control. It is quite sad. TO have the adoration of millions, to have such a god given talent, money and when it's all said and done, none of that stuff matters! It's so sad!

  • wonderful voice

  • I don't know. This time of year with the holidays around the corner. Makes for tears. She seemed so tormented. I can see it in her eyes. I wish I knew her. An angel lost. She's immortal now, enshrined here for us. Godspeed Karen. We miss you so.

  • Well anyway, it is a shame she died young.

  • Haha! Me too! I mean some know I have been listening to The Carpenters lately but they didn't know I've been addicted to it. Her voice is just amazing. I began listening a few weeks ago, when I remembered we had an old Carpenters CD which I couldn't find.

  • Personally Im getting a little tired of seeing 'r.i.p.', people should just take a few seconds of their precious time to write out 'rest in peace' , its so much more nicer than 'rip.' You see 'rip' on Halloween decorations, its so cheap, fuck 'rip'!

  • What about the original Latin 'requiescat in pace'? Pretentious, or tinged with sincerity?

  • gorgeous

  • I so love this song, karen was a fantastic singer. this song is sooo true especially for those who suffer S.A.D what an artist.

  • Fine drummer, fine vocalist. RIP.

  • Comment removed

  • ....fondest memories as a young child...swooning to this and others....xox...miss the chance to hear her...truly sad when she died...i remember my mother crying..:(

  • I cried too.

  • this song makes me cry at 27 years of age in 2009. what a beautiful woman you don't get music like this anymore.

  • I think of her voice as maple syrup-it flows softly, sweetly, brilliantly. I could listen to it all day.

  • You can tell she was like good wine, she would have got better with age.

  • I love her voice. Always will. RIP Karen.

  • I think I would have married karen...aw crap! I was only 8 years old.

  • I was only 5 years old when Karen passed away. but as a man ( 31 years old ) now I would have married her in a flat second.. I have been a fan of the Carpenters since I was 15.. I have heard songs like this a million times and still it never gets old.. Karen was a truely talented lady.. May she rest in peace.. she truely is immortal...

  • Unreal huh.......?

  • Then don't listen...

  • I love her singing, always have. There is so much sorrow in it.

  • Beautiful voice. Beautiful girl.

  • R.I.P CARON,YOUR AWSOME

  • Karen is the best, better Barbra.

  • @huntersingle She was very picky when it came to men and had a whole list of qualities she wanted in a man, the foremost being that he be independently wealthy so he wouldn't be a gold-digger. The man she married, Tom Burris, SEEMED to have all these qualities- but the fancy cars and boats were a sham; he was living beyond his means and WAS a gold-digger. He drained her bank accounts, lied about having a vasectomy even though he knew she wanted children, and was a total jerk to her.

  • Such a beautiful woman. So talented. What's funny is that she came to us from heaven, became a star, and went back to heaven :) "A Star on Earth, A Star in Heaven" Love you, Karen.

  • One of the very best vocalist of all time (how many times have you seen a female playing the drums & have a voice from heaven)?

  • Karen Carpenter was one of a kind...this song is one of my favorites, beautiful and melancholy.

  • her voice will be heard, until the end of mankind.

  • @jimnolsheim That is one of the most beautiful and appropriate comments on youtube.

  • @jimnolsheim

    yep..

  • her voice makes you feel so happy yet sad... great singer

  • really like her voice....

her voice is the only one....

  • this song really made me cry..

  • You can see how much she loved being on stage in her eyes. Carpenters were smooth.

  • karen forever

  • Esta canción es una de las mas lindas que ellos pudierón grabar ...ella trasmitia sus sentimeintos en cada canción, Tenia una voz preciosa.....la mas linda y dulce que he escuchado........

  • i was about to cry..:(

  • It is like her wounds are in communication with mine.

  • Karen's voice is so hauntingly beautiful, I still get goosebumps when I hear her sing.

  • i miss Karen soo much, though i never met her...but still i love her, hayyyyy...i wish there's someone blessed voice like karen, she still my idol, it'll not change...

  • warm voice.. i really love her voice

  • a song about drugs and alcohol? - are you nuts! The Carpenters were real musicians and squeeky clean in their music. Just take the words of their songs at face value - they were great musicians with no "secret message".

  • Love it. Very beautiful.

  • to reply to dammack 19 80 the year was 19 83 and yeah she was singing pretty much up to the end

  • G R A Z I E !!! non ti abbiamio dimenticato

  • even though karen left us already....

the music that made by her still lingers in the heart of some people

    and I"M one of 'em.

  • What year did Karen die? was she singing till the end?

  • 1974 february 04

  • i really love her voice....

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • she's a legend!

  • Just think about Eric Clapton and how some short sigted fans thought that he tried to make money from his sons Connors death this is the same theme for shortsighted vindictive fans. Destiny and gods reach is way beyond any human being. Watch history and judge for your self. Love you all. Love the Carpenters and their music forever.

  • Kshaligin, my condolence to you.

  • what do you mean by held her back..

  • beautiful!!!
