the last bar skill has been banned for the lower levels of bar, but is not banned if you are in the more elite levels. It is a very risky and dangerous skill, which is why not to many gymnasts do it. In Canada, we've only had a couple gymnasts try to get it and only one was successful. It is hard to train, and hard to master.
@LMA629 :28 is banned because of the risk of getting your leg caught within the rings. There have been several male gymnasts who have tried this skill and gotten their leg stuck in the rings which then teared their tendons and muscles.....meaning they couldn't do gymnastics anymore
The Thomas Salto is all about relative height and rotation which is why it is allowed still for men. Women gymnasts tend to be short and they have much less margin for error on the landing.
Julissa was injured attempting a Yurchenko - her coach (guess who) made it clear that to get into the elite (ie Olympic squad)] she needed to master it. Sadly, it was not the difficulty of the element so much as she simply didn't have the vaulting skills nor (most importantly) the necessary size/strength to safely attempt it. Such physical limitations of female gymnasts is recognised hence the ban on those variations.
The difference between the Tsukahara (invented by a man) and the Yurchenko (invented by a woman) is precisely strength vs. precision. Since Julissa didn't have much of the former, she had no choice but to try the latter. Unfortunately, she was lacking in precision and consistency. Sad ...
@xazngiirlx The thomas salto was banned for women because of Elena Mukhina, who under-rotated the skill while performing it, striking her chin on the floor at high speed and breaking her neck. She later died of complications.
I looooooooooved it ! ! ! it is on my favorites. there are sooooo many videos on my channel, so come and see some ausome gymnastics montages ! ! ! GYMGIRL
The Pak Salto itself is still being done but gymnasts are no longer allowed to swing forward right after like this gymnast did because of the risk of neck injuries if she lands bad.
There are two moves in gymnastics that are called the "Korbut flip". One is the uneven bars skill shown is this video, the other is a beam skill (standing backflip to swing down). The bars skill has been banned because standing on the high bar is no longer allowed (it is both dangerous and disrupts the rhythm of the routine) but the beam skill remains in today's Code.
It hasn't actually been banned, per se, it has just hasn't been performed for several quadrennia and therefore isn't listed in the Code of Points. If a gymnast wanted to perform it, she could have it added .
Probably because if you would land wrong, the beam would hurt your back/back off the neck pretty hard, because when you flip off the beam, if you are too close, the back off the neck will touch the beam and that's dangerous cuz u can paralyze >.O
It's the transition going to the lower bar, not the transition going to the higher bar, and I think it was banned because it's dangerous/possibility of neck injuries.
it's just a free-hip hecht.... not that difficult. In fact more people don't perform it because it's no longer ranked that high. I'm pretty sure it's not banned, either!
no, they didn't ban the Thomas Salto and Elena snapped her neck doing it. They only ban things when there is a high chance of getting permanently injured. I have no idea why the Thomas wasn't...but the Thomas with 2.5 twist was.
Everything in gymnastics can be painful. Some things are just easier than others.
The Thomas Salto is not meant to be landed on the feet. The gymnast goes from the 3/4 salto into a dive roll. If the salto is under-rotated, the gymnast can easily land on the neck or chin, damaging the spine. All roll-out moves are banned in women's gymnastics, and men may perform them only if there are no more than 1.5 twists in the flight phase.
It's hard to see exactly what she's doing - it looks like three back handsprings to a double back. That doesn't seem so risky ... can someone clarify?
I thought the Pak-Endo combination was breathtaking, but agreed it's dangerous. It is banned? Mind you, most things in gymnastics are indeed dangerous. Try convincing me that a somersault on the beam is not dangerous, but gymnasts practice the skills till they are so confident that it is no longer dangerous. Is the cartwheel side somersault vault banned? And is a double side from rings as a dismount banned? That surprised me.
I love all this innovative stuff. Enjoy it, as Beccka says, everyone does the same old skills now. The Pak-forward Stalder combo is absolutely incredible. Who is the gymnast doing it?
I believe it's an american gymnast named Monica Shaw. She compited in the early 90's and and was from Rocky Mountain. She performed the skill successfully throughout 1991-1992. Perhaps this video is from the 1992 Cunichi Cup or Tokyo Cup. She is the only gymnast to perform the skill I believe.
oirobi, I agree. I was watching clips of ub routines from 2004 2005 - and EVERYONE is doing the same set of skills. No one tries anything wild any more; no more cool mounts, new skills, no originality at all. Just a few quick moves that get the points, and that's it. We've lost the 'artistic' part of artistic gymnastics...
I should say after the bars were moved farther apart, the exercise lost a lot. I liked it the old-fashioned way when the girls did incredible things on the bars (and the "belly beat" was the least impressive of them)! Nowadays the exercise looks absolutely boring! Way to go, gymnastics officials! And in a few years you will lose half of your fans, if not all of them are gone to watch other, more spectacular sports...
And what's wrong with uneven bars in the middle? Girls don't have balls, do they? (=; So no risk of injury. Or did they happen to hit the bar with the lower belly (=ovaries)?
It wasn't the belly beat that was banned; those simply went out of style as the bars were moved farther apart. What was banned was standing on the high bar (the skill was known as the Korbut.) Too bad, really; it's very impressive!
Yep, they are banned. And about the last skill, It was the Pak salto-forward stalder. It's really risky to catch a Pak in forward grip and completely change your backward momentum into a forward stalder. I could see a lot of slipping and back and neck injuries on that..
Last clip is fantastic.
