terrible result of a missed body check. just flat out missed his shoulder and we can all see what happened because of it. i'm a diehard Wings fan and i'll be the first to say he deserved the supplementary discipline, even though i don't agree with the rulebook.
This uploader dude NhlArchive does not think ANY HIT is dirty or vicious. Unless if it's delivered by Matt Cooke. He always explains that the player getting hit was unaware or he had it coming, should have known etc etc
The league clearly wants to change the perception of such hits. A big hit is cool to see and we may think it's just part of the game, but the league and NHLPA want to protect the players because concussions can be career ending. The head can't be targeted (intentional) and/or be the principal point of contact (includes unintentional). So the player making the hit is almost 100% responsible for any head hit. That is the rule and players need to adjust their game accordingly.
There was nothing fair or legal about this check.....it's about as clear cut as these things go....you could use this hit as an instructional video about how not to check.
Mistimed or punk move - fact is he leaned into it with his shoulder and arm and made contact with Ben Smith's head. Whether unintentional or not, that's a fine, suspension, whatever. The guy was knocked out FFS!
@hospitaler808 this isn't an illegal hit, but him having the puck doesn't make it legal or illegal, it would just mean it's not interference or unsportsmanlike conduct.
Players are aware of the rules now, and I'm in agreement with tons of other people - Brendan was trying to hit him shoulder to shoulder and it was just impossible for him to react when Ben moved.
The players can't just be aware of the dangers and try to avoid them anymore, they need to actually be changing the way they do things. Learn how to hit a guy in a different way that assures solid body contact instead of a miss and a concussion.
@NHLArchive he had plenty of options to go with to stop the Chicago player and chose one option that went wrong. it doesnt matter intentional or not. now please tell me my opinion is wrong and that I am a idiot and yours is right. :D
@iDropHost It's no longer a fair hit because of the new rules. watch the videos on NHL.com, they explain that you are no longer aloud to hit the players head, it is eligal.
You can clearly see Brendan Smith gather up to push his shoulder into Ben Smith's head. Look at how far his elbow comes out from his body. He clearly saw the opportunity to go for his head and took it. Should be at least a five game suspension
The Detroit defender was clearly about to get beaten by a good move and all he could do is throw a shoulder to the head at that point. He will learn his lesson that when you are beaten you have to suck it up or you won't last long in this league - and he needs to learn the rules. My guess is that this guy is going to get his deserved retaliation during the regular season.
Everyone's an expert these days... Unfortunate situation and at least Smith did'nt go on playing like "What? Nothing happened!" like so many other players do.
This is one of those bullshit situations. If the forward was prepared for a hit he would have protected himself. YOU CANNOT FAULT A DEFENSEMAN FOR TAKING THE BODY... He was in the motion of the hit when the forward tried to dance around him.. Guess what, this is the NHL, if you try figure skating out here, this is the result. You get caught in a vulnerable position and contact is going to be awkward. Too bad it happened, but it did. Forwards need to protect themselves.
maybe an elbow..but he wasnt trying to hit him in the head, Ben was attempting to toe drag (also indicating it was NOT blindside) past Brendan, and in doing so he lowered his shoulder and head, Brendan could not have adjusted his trajectory in time.
Nu suspension for me....don't give a suspension after every hit...no hit, it's not the true hockey...but for now, the nhl give great suspension for dirty plays and that's ok !
smith is not a dirty player. i've been following him since he played at wisco and i think this is just a bad coincidence. he'll probably get a suspension, but nothing too heavy because he's not a repeat offender
@thewhitewhale11 and it wasn't his fault, it is kind of a joke that the nhl can suspend guys for moves the other guy makes even if they had absolutely 0 intent of injuring them.
@NHLArchive it's a flawed system for sure. and you're right it wasn't his fault, smith is one of our top prospects. he's a smart player and he makes great decisions, i highly doubt he had that intent.
@NHLArchive i would tend to agree with you, but looking at it again (particularly at 1:20), he made no sudden movements immediately prior to the hit, and the hit was all head, so judging from that i feel like it warrants a suspension. it sucks, but i think its necessary to have these rules to protect players from injury
Not really seeing the "fair" part. This is one of the hits you have to get ride of and it's "fair"? Wow, no wonder I'm going to start watching soccer more...
@selannekariya ben smith was in a position to see brendan smith coming, he could have protected himself, it was fair for brendan smith to step up, and the hit to the head was fait because ben smith went for the toe drag and forced himself into a position to get hit in the head while brendan smith was already committed to what would have been a shoulder to shoulder hit.
@selannekariya you're an idiot. "I'm going to stop watching contact sports because people get hurt", you can't tell me that soccer isn't a contact sport and that people don't get rough in it. Hell the fans are worse than the players and I'm not disrespecting the sport at all. You're just retarded in your logic.
Ben did nothing to get out of the way, he was clearly able to see Brendan coming and thought he'd try to get a shot off first to make his coaches proud. He threw his arm up after initial contact was made, as NHLArchive said, there was no intention to injure or "head hunt", it's just an unfortunate hit.
@selannekariya Everyone wants to see hockey continue to be physical, but there is no room for headshots. There is a very fine line to walk and I think Shanahan is doing a damn good job.
@ShaUNGreTzkylashLey1 he is, but he shouldn't be, these kinds of hits aren't a problem in todays game, sure they happen but they are few and far between.

Quite frankly, it's the player who puts himself in the vulnerable position by trying the toe drag. Body on body if he stays wide

You cant lable a rule to something that varrys so much. Needs to be a case by case basis. its a little dirty but not the diryest hit i have seen.

Exactly what we need out of the game, fair suspension and a deserving misconduct.
