  • A different time and child actors were so used. Glad to know the movie was a happy one for Judy, per her daughters. But did you see Shirley Temple - bags under the eyes of a 10 year old!? Seasoned to say, "There's no place like home" before the cameras.

  • does anyone know how much money these actor's got for this movie,I am sure it was better than what the average person made in 1939,but I am also sure it was not MILLIONS.Ray Bolger had to wear that itchy straw and rubber mask,Jack Haley had all that thick make-up and Burt Lahr's Lion suit was over 100 pounds,I heard they had to dry in in an oven over night everyday after filming, from Burt sweating in it...........

  • that was not the real reason Shirley Temple did not get the part, she was under contract with another studio, and no matter how much MGM begged, they would NOT let her do the role of Dorothy

  • I love Garland in the movie, but Shirley Temple is actually closer to the character as originally conceived in the Oz books. She's supposed to be 11!

  • Liza Minelli is Judy Garland's dauter? I didn't know it!!!!!!!

  • @saolili Really? I didn't know it... it's horrible!

  • They made her loose weight, she looked so happy before. So sad.

  • @0on0o If you want to be a leading actress then you can't be fat.

  • Gosh Shirley Temple was SO DARN CUTE!!! But Judy was beautiful.

  • @shawnielee1976 Both of them were such wonderful actresses in their day. It's sad to know that they both had tough times in their lives. Neither of them got to have a normal childhood. And yet, they were still willing to keep their fans happy and entertained throughout their careers. I admire them both for that very much.

  • @musiklivesinmyheart Right,now-a-days she would be considered"Thick"and they would probably try to put a nasty-ass"Thong"on her she was a"Classic"and deserves to rest in peace, just like you said.

  • Shirley would be a bit too ...cutesy and adorably-sickening for this role, idk, i like the strong Judy voice, and character more :)

  • And also if shirley was Dorothy over the rainbow would prpbobly have not been written.

  • @750013046 I agree the world would've never known about over the rainbow Judy Garland owned that song regardless is she was in the film or not that song is hers.

  • I don't think it had to do with age because they were also suggesting deana Durban who was around judy's age at that time.

  • Mrs Potts is narrating..

  • dont get me wrong i love judy as the part but shirley temple would have been awesome as Dorothy!

  • @rhirsch2014 I mean, I guess I could see Shirley in the part. But she was more bubbly and inauthentic. I think of the scene where Dorothy cries for Auntie Em in the witches castle "I'm frightened!" Shirley wouldn't have been able to pull it off as well as Judy did.

  • @rhirsch2014 .Except for the singing and acting involved....I'd agee.

  • @rhirsch2014 From the clips shown here, I don't see any way Shirley could have pulled it off. She just looks too young and cutesie. Admittedly, that's colored by the little I remember from her other films, but still... Definitely Judy! :-)

  • There's No Place Like Home : )

  • Judy is Dorothy... only and unic! I love Judy!

  • R.I.P JUDY! You are dearly missed!!!

  • She is the perfect person! Her singing in beautiful! I cant believe shes gone! Its so sad!

  • @EmzySparrowxxx Most definetly gone to soon.

  • just hear her sing. she's beautiful. she's amazing.

  • dude judy garland is beautiful! not weird looking!

  • It's amazing how many people would have loved to have Shirley play this part. Judy was Dorothy! It was practically made for her! She could act and sing better than Shirley. R.I.P Judy Garland! You were show business.

  • @StraightEdgeSavage - Yeah, really...even Jack Haley (the Tin Man), who had worked with Temple previously, said she wouldn't have been right for the part, particularly given her limited vocal abilities.

  • Oh my gosh. Casting Shirley Temple, they might as well have chosen Ethel Merman, since they had the same capabilities of subtlety in their voices. Can you imagine what an awful mess would have been made of Somewhere Over the Rainbow? Ugh

  • i imagine Shirley Temple in my head as Dorothy being in the movie . its the best movie i've ever imagined .

  • @amsooldnot i was talking to a friend about that very idea. Maybe two Oz movies... Shirley Temple would have been a riot and very dear...

  • @amsooldnot look at Judy's big meaningful sad eyes, hear her voice...Shirley didn't have THAT.

  • i didn't know Judy Garlened had kids. :0

  • @TheDirectorN Seriously? She's mother to Liza Minelli!

  • I laugh at some of the spiteful comments towards a 10 year old. And coming from adults no less. Oh My Word! LOL

  • Shirley Temple is best child actor ever, there is no one like her, she is one of kind. They should had chosen her to play dorothy really, what were they think

  • I believe Judy's role as Dorothy started a downward spiral of self loathing & self hatred later on in her carrer. They gave her Meth in the day, wich came in a pill form & at the time, called "uppers" & sleeping pills in the night. The director's of the film demanded tooooooo much from her. Her role of Dorothy is what started her drug addiction. Bless her heart.

  • Yeah, Judy wasn't told politely to lose weight. She was told by adult males that she was fat, had a weird nose (which she kind of did) and wasn't attractive. Saying that to a 13/14 year old girl will have life long effects. Louis B Mayer called her "my little hunchback" in front of celebrities. If that's not emotionally devastating I don't know what is...

  • Comment removed

  • @millers3888 Ironically, I believe she was so pretty during her younger years! It was the unhealthy life-style she assumed in order to avoid those emotional issues what made her look less attractive later during her lifetime. But anyway, she was one of the really grand stars of Hollywood's golden era. For me, she was the perfect Dorothy and will always will be.

  • @MsGlorimar I agree, Judy was more attractive during her young years at MGM. My opinion is it's because they altered her appearance. Judy was naturally beautiful but you notice it from Meet Me in St Louis until she died she had a bad nose, and she also had crooked teeth. At MGM they put in nose discs and put caps on her teeth. It may have altered her appearance and deeply affected her mind but it honestly made her look better. I mean look at Presenting Lily Mars for example, Judy looks her best.

  • I don't think they meant any harm by telling her that she needed to lose weight. It's not like it's a new practice, anyway. And Dorothy was not a sixteen year old in the books.

  • @Kari166 True, it was the practice in Hollywood. To be an actress in Judy Garland's days was all about sexy figure and thin waists.

In regards to Shirley Temple being a show off, it shows in her acting. She's not natural.

  • Perhaps if this were spoken in the past tense I would have enjoyed it.

  • y..

  • It always blows my mind for some reason when i hear that Liza Minnelli is Judy Garlands daughter xD

  • @alixxmcr94 i know right xD

  • @alixxmcr94 dude, tell me about it.. i barely knew who liza minnelli was, i've heard of her a few times but thats it. And when i saw 1:39 I was like :O whaaa? She's Dorothy's daughter!?

  • @alixxmcr94 lol have you heard BALLS TO YOU? i have and it is funny

  • @alixxmcr94 i know same here i feel like wow dorothy had kids lmfao

  • @alixxmcr94 She looks like her father more. Vincente Minnelli

  • @alixxmcr94 Liza Roundahouse! Liza Bouterage!

  • She wasn't even fat before she lost the weight. Man, are people warped.

When I first saw the Wizard of Oz when I was 3, I remember I thought she was the most beautiful, perfect girl in the world, even prettier than a princess at the time. <3

  • From what I understand Louis B. Mayer referred to her as "That Fat Girl" and "The Hunchback" long before OZ and while she was standing right there.

  • Ugh...I love the past!! I wanna go back so bad :(

  • 8 years-ago(when i was 3) everyone thought i looked like Shirley Temple

  • they made her lose weight? :O

  • @Daktacort91 I imagine they did it to make her look smaller and more child like.

  • I will always wonder exactly what the deal was with Shirley Temples story on why she didn't get Dorothy because her story is not believable at all and doesn't go with MGMs side even a little bit. I believe MGMs side, but I don't think Shirley Temple is lying. I think she told what was told to her. I wonder if they didn't want to make her feel bad about her voice or just didn't want to admit the biggest money maker didn't have the voice they needed.

  • @DisWldFrk90 Watch everybody sing on youtube. Garland has a much betther voice. But I still love shirley.

  • @cannonball251 Oh I've seen all Judy Garland movies. I'm the biggest Garland fan ever! I totally agree she has a better voice and was way more suited for Dorothy. I was saying I really wonder what exactly Shirley Temple was told and why for why she didn't get Dorothy. I think she's aware MGM says her voice wasn't good enough, but I don't think that's what her mother told her. I think her mother told her something else so she sticks by that story.

  • Too bad Shirley didn't get the role. She would have been even more lovable and famous, if that's possible.

  • @cannonball251 Oh come on she's famous enough! lol. She's known as "Hollywood's biggest little star" still. And her ambassador work put her right back in the spotlight even without acting. She does not need more fame than she already has and she's lovable enough as well.

  • If they were ever to do a remake, I'd cast my vote for Danielle Panabaker, given her resemblance to Garland.

  • haha thats so mean, they wanted her to lose weight

  • I never knew why Judy Garland thought she wasn't pretty enough.

The first time I saw Wizard of Oz was when I was a 6 year old, and once I saw Judy Garland as Dorothy, my gosh, I thought she was the prettiest farm girl around.

  • she was such an amazing women! <3

  • she was DEFINITELY not having fun making the movie

  • @aSliceOfSky I actually will argue that one. If Judy really was not having fun with something, she would not be quiet about it after it was over. She would tell in a joking manner how she did not like that experience. Like when she got terminated from MGM she said "Leo the Lion bit me with his sharp gums!" In The Wizard of Oz she made a lot of fun stories on it and when talking about it she lit up. Her kids even agree you could tell she had a great time making The Wizard of Oz.

  • clatelynn: As Bolger himself stated, "Judy was just like a little girl from Kansas. She wasn't...pretty. She was plump, but in a way, she was beautiful."

  • I wish I looked like Judy did. How in the world she ever thought she was fat and ugly is beyond me. She was beautiful and I LOVE her smile..

  • @bladesofglory12 She thought she was fat and ugly because the adults around her told her she was. Mr. Mayer called her "his little hunchback." Her mother let them basically starve her on the set because she didn't have the "perfect figure" like the other teen stars at the time. She was never fat and ugly to me and I wished that those people who pretended to care about her never said anything.

  • What was the song Judy was singing with that classroom

  • @AzulaLover1 It's called "Swing Mr Mendelssohn".

  • And for those who only know her from this film "oz" you know something Judy was one of hollywoods best entertainers of all time over the rainbow was metaphor for her life because she went through an awful lot they put a lot of things of her head brainwashing her and she was not just Dorothy gale people she was terrific as Mickey rooneys sidekick also great in meet me in St.Louis a star is born very sad but great. All her songs you made me love you, the trolley song the man that got away, and

  • Okay um first of to all the naysayers saying that Judy was too old for the role of 12 year old Dorothy is way wrong!!! Because Dorothy gale is supposed to be 14 she was 16 during the filming of the film and 17 at the release of the film Shirley temple couldn't handle the singing of over the rainbow no offense she was little plus people let's get real Judy garland one of my idols her life but the song over the rainbow was metaphor for her life cuz of her gilded cage of a life.

  • @cinderelmo: Actually, Dorothy was written as an inquisitive 10-12 year old in the Baum book. Judy was beyond that age, so they used corsets, wigs, and makeup to make her appear 12 when she was actually 16.

  • @cinderelmo Shirley Temple was probably too fat, considering they thought Judy Garland was fat. Maybe it's much easier for Miss Garland to lose weight because she's older.

  • Wizard of Oz can't be the same master-piece without Judy Gardland !

She was an amazing woman, so beautiful with a perfect voice ! a real angel !

  • "JUDY MUST LOOSE SOME WAIT"????????????!

HOW DARE THEY! SHE IS FINE JUST THE WAY SHE IS AND THPSE MEDIA PPLE ARE AWFUL

  • @34RiverStone *weight. but IKR?

  • Shirley would have been okay, but Judy killed it, in the good way.

  • I remember this was at the back of my Wizard of Oz VCR :)

  • If this was remade now, then, I'll like Selena Gomez to play Dorothy. But Judy's originality will be so much better. "Judy must loose some weight", huh? Well, they took Judy to death!

  • @RaysonPaulTancasis i don't know about selena gomez playing her cause dorothy's supposed to be 12 and they were already pushing it with casting 16 year old Judy Garland to play her and Selena's 18 and about to turn 19

  • @Naruhinaluver15 Yeah, but they can change the character's age...

  • The saddest thing about Judy's career was that she was taking drugs to control her weight and I'm sure that this made remembering Hollywood's golden age that much harder. It's amazing that Shirley Temple is still alive today on 5/16/11 I had the pleasure of meeting her and she is a classy lady who is full of love for her fans.

  • @ConfusedSponge I agree. Judy Garland had more to offer than Shirley Temple.

  • @saolili ;-)

  • who played dorthy in the remake

  • um, heh is it just me or did 15 and 16-year olds look like 20 year olds do now? taller-like? ....or is that just the way professionals made it look on camera? lol

  • who made this woman believe she was ugly?

  • i think she looked better before she was forced to loose weight. she looks more like a person, instead of a stick. poor bunny.

  • @TheSkylur22 OMG I luv Ed Wynn!!!!!!!!!

I think do really great as the wizard or uncle Henry bur waz he even around at this time(1939)

  • @IIILeadUFollow actually that is kinda true but at the same time false. Judy's mom made her diet and starve herself to get skinny. Her mom is what u would call Ur " ordinary bossy stage mom". MGM did say she needed to lose weight but when her mom heard, she really over did it with the weight loss. There's a documentary that shows what happens. It's called Judy Garland, Debunking the Shirley Temple. It's on YouTube.

  • IDIOTS!!!!!!! She was amazing before and there was NO reason for losing weight!!!!!!!!! I mean i am glad she got the part and was in the movie, but she was perfectly fine the way she was, she didn't need any weight loss. She was thin and beautiful, not that she wasn't in the movie, but before she was herself and not the pill popping, drug-addict she became because they told her she needed to lose weight.

  • This movie was the reason Judy garland got hooked on drugs. She had to take diet pills to lose weight and had to take sleeping pills and pills to help her wake up. This movie just effed her up. She was only 16 being pumped full of drugs. MGM should have taken a different approach! Oh well whats done is done

  • Ms.Temple wasn't the first choice for the role of "Dorothy"..she was one of the choices..but..as Ms.Lansbury said here.."The demands of this role"went beyond what Ms.Temple could do.And Thank God! Judy got the part and we're all grateful for her performance.

  • Comment removed

  • Im more of a Shirley fan than Judy, but the role of Dorothy seems it was MADE for Judy.

  • I love ST but there is no way this classic would have achieved the level of success it has. I do wish Ed Wynn had gotten the role of the wizard, the guard, Prof marvel and the coachman.

  • @TheSkylur44 I agree with you. He would have been great. I haven't thought of him for years. Used to love seeing him on tv. :)

  • shirley temple as dorothy... somewhere over the rainbow woukd be a lil' tap number if that happened.

  • THE DREAMS OF MR MULDOON is now available on AMAZON KINDLE for 2.99.The publishers said this novel would make a great film.If you like this Wizard of Oz you will like this novel too.

  • judy was so beautiful! she was born to play dorothy

  • Judy was born in 1922, and she would probably still be alive today. My grandmother who was born in 1929 is still alive & kicking. But then again, that is a seven year difference.

  • @bphussar my grandmother is 84. Judy would be 85. She could still be alive.

  • @bphussar my grandmother was born January 1921 and Judy was born June 1922 and she is still alive today so it is is possible.

  • Oh shit. That's Mrs. Lovett talking isn't it?

  • can't ya just hear 'oh, my goodness!' if shirley had opened to sepia-toned door into technicolor OZ?

  • my fav movie of all time ,thanks for uploading , xxxxxxx

  • LOOL JUDY MUST LOSE SOME WEIGHT!!!

  • 1:31 "Judy must lose some weight..."

They were only trying to make her look the part. I don't think they meant any harm. Judy was sixteen years old when she did "The Wizard of Oz" and they needed to make her look like a little girl that is seen in the illustrations in the book.

  • @Cance251 It still was very unhealthy. It can really destroy a girl's perception of a realistic and healthy body image. Perhaps they were unaware of all the repercussions back then. IDK?

  • @flowersings im sure they understood the reprucussions back then and, just like they do now, they just didnt give a fuck

  • @Cance251 well i wouldn't be too shur about that...if you do some surching in youtube she has said that mgm throughout her carreer where extremly cruel to her

  • @Phersephoie Judy Garland left MGM on bad terms so she didn't like the way the studio treated her.

They were cruel to her, but then again long term contracts mean slavery because you're stuck with them, and she was young so it was easy for the studio to control her. However, she was one of the highest paid stars in her days.

  • well, i dont think it would have been bad with shirley temple in terms of the looks of the part being that dorathy was supposed to be only 9- 10 years old and Judy was 16. but temple probably didnt have the kind of vocal talent that the producers of Oz were looking for.

  • Gosh, it would have been SUCH a different movie if they had have gone with Shirley Temple ... I'm thinking different in a disastrous way too.

  • Judy Garland was NOT FAT!!!!! She was beautiful no matter what.

  • Is she still alive??

  • @tmbelmo No she died back in 1969

  • Damn, Judy was pretty, actually kinda hot.

  • John Wayne was going to play Dorothy since he had more dresses then Dorothy but he couldn't fit into a size 3

  • This is from that 1990 documentary

  • Y'know she's a lesbian in the books... just sayin'

  • @IGiveMyLife2Follow - Actually Shirley temple has accomplished alot....She has been appointed US Ambassador to several different nations and / or organizations through the 70's, and as recently as the early 90's

  • @Nitro1970 yep my great aunt is the best..god knows I love her and always will.

  • I love Shirley Temple but it just would've gone in a more cheesy way than the book intended. Judy's voice was amazing but she was WWAAYYYYY to old to play Dorothy!! The part should have gone to someone much younger. Oh yeah and she isn't fat but she was told to lose some weight. Just saying.

  • @SLR4 she had to lose weight because her boobs were too big...so they put her on speed...and then downers to sleep

hollywood turned her into an addict

  • @SLR4 I don't think she was. I enjoy the movie because Dorothy goes through teen struggles, like escaping to somewhere bigger and better and all of that. I wouldn't have enjoyed it if they had a young girl play Dorothy.

And it wasn't that she was fat, she just had to look the part.

  • I would have DIED if Shirley Temple. Honestly, the Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie and I'm 14..I know everything about it (almost) and if Shirley Temple was Dorothy, I would have watched it once and never watch it again. I don't like Shirley's acting. At all. Not to hate on her. And I agree, Judy was beautiful. She didn't need to loose weight.

  • @Tiffmidon True, Shirley Temple is not hatable, but she is childish and a show off.

  • @saolili, how is she a show-off?

(And yes, she's childish. Because she was only 10. :P)

  • I adore Judy. Funnily enough when they were first playing around with the costuming for the part of Dorothy, they gave her a big blond wig and kind of tried to do what Hollywood does to stories- add a touch of fake glam. People finally agreed that the look was more of a "bimbo" look than that of a sensible young girl.

  • I know that MGM was pleased that they chose Judy Garland for the part instead of Shirley Temples. I cannot imagine anyone playing the part of Dorothy as good as Judy Garland did. It seemed like that role was made just for her.

  • It's from Everybody sing

  • nevermind, found it.

  • That one part where Judy was singing, what movie is that from???

  • @lindsayphoto - It's from Everybody Sing.

  • Teenage girls are suppose to have curves look at the lion he was bigger then she was!

  • @katie90100 yeah ..lol most men in their 30s are bigger than 16 yr old girls. you should know by now that different things are expected from men that are from women.

  • OK. people should not say bad things about shirley.

    geez.

  • what?! she was pretty, she wasn't fat at all. i know the difference between fat and skinny. judy was fine. is that how she died? with a drug overdose b/c she was addicted?

  • "Lose some weight"? Seriously? She wasn't fat or anything! She was prettier than the skeleton women today, in any case.

  • JUDY WE STILL LOVE YOU !

would give anything for you to be back with us

    JUDY GARLAND ARMY FOREVER!

  • she is and has been for over 40 years,an ambassortor to china

  • some comments make me really angry! why are you talking so bad about shirley? because of a comparison to judy?! you can´t compare them! their talents were so different and that´s ok. just because judy was the better choice to play dorothy, shirley was untalented and annoying? to my mind, people who say such things just don´t know shirley. she was an extemely talented litte girl and she was incomparable! just like judy. so, why is there such a need to say "judy was better!? they are both legends!

  • @IGiveMyLife2Follow

seems like you don´t know who shirley temple is!

  • This HAS GOT to be (A much Younger) ANGELA LANSBURRY Narrating this!!!

  • lose some weight LOSE SOME FUCKING WEIGHT wtf that is the crappest excuse ever

  • thank godness this angel got that part!

  • Well, you can see nothing has changed.....actresses to Hollywood (in their eyes) are still too fat. My god actresses dying for the sake of weight I guess isn't enough of a heads up. Sad

  • Judy may god be with you i'll see you some day in the heavens

  • Yeah, I like how they say the "lose weight" comment like it was something fine and normal and neglect to mention how it would kill her later.

  • was this part an interview with her about auditioning for wizard of oz at 0:34?

  • wizard of oz is a film i'll always love and watch from time to time no matter how old i get, i just love this movie

  • Judy Garland is one of the best talents in Hollywood history.

She was beautiful and had an amazing voice.

Too bad that drugs and booze got the best of her in the end.

    Love her anyway.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • @LoveAnna13 Funny thing is, we would be saying the same thing if it were the other way around. They are both legendary performers

  • I saw movies about her life and how she got cast into the role of Dorothy Gale. Liza Minnelli is Judy Garland's daughter. I love Shirley Temple.

  • judy garland and carecrow wer very good together

i couldnt see shirley temple tryin to be better than the relatiopnship that they had :)

  • "Judy must lose some weight..."

Biggest load of crap in the world. Judy was plain gorgeous no matter her weight.

  • @Liebling05 Unfortunately young actors especially actresses and singers take that to heart when they hear it said of them...Judy, Karen Carpenter, etc... sad...but true..

  • @Liebling05 Yes.. this is what killed Judy 8(
