:35 the foot slides off all together.... all they have to avoid this is let go of the leg and they're out.
infact, i think that to do this fast enough to surprise any one enough to pull this off you would probably generate enought force from going over them quickly that they wouldn't be able to hold on to the arm anyhow. i havent tried it so i don't know.
props for trying something different.
i don't mean to cramp your style, but try no-gi for a while, your gi game will rock.
also: The entry to this move is pretty slick with hooking the arm and falling back, but the fact is: your oppnt is NEVER going to go for that move. 110 percent of thetime that the guy hooks behind your leg, in defense to you opening his guard, he is looking to either knock you over backwards using a type of 'waiter' sweep or most commonly spin for an omoplata/sweep transition. it makes no sense to turtle like that unless your name is eduardo telles and u think thats where u should fight from.
i know this guy,not only have i trained under cassio werneck in sacramento california but i got family in zarqa jordan,an hour away from the school mirza runs
Have you successfully pulled this off in an uncontrolled environment?
No, i have not done this move, or even attempted it....as i said in an earlier comment, i've never seen this counter outside this video. i would counter the sweep completely different.
@TheSenseofTouch Can you choke someone with the legs the wrong way? YES. but it increases the oppnts chances of escape by not applying the same pressure on the arm and if he puts weight back in to you, your not able to effectively shrimp to get to his back
If you could get that to work then Kudos to you...but look at that more closely when he performs the move...notice how easy it would be for the victim to slip his arm right out of the legs and go right for a side control position...i wouldn't risk this myself. If you stand up in someone's guard so eagerly and haphazardly as this gentlemen did then you probably deserve what you have coming to you. (i understand it was for demonstration but you learn quick NOT to do that, unless you can slam)
what if you wrapped your leg around his arm as you pulled him down, like wrapping the back of your knee around his elbow instead of just your foot on his forearm?
Its all about the timing when countering the sweep. This movment allows you to sit on his back in order to prevent him from coming up and getting the sweep. If you don't prevent him from posturing for sure he'll get the sweep.
well the best way to find out is to try it yourself, if you can find a way to modify this move a bit to get it to work for you then great. i still feel that it would be easy to pull out even if you wrapped your leg around his arm and tried to secure it. I think the real issue though with this move is the likelihood of this situation happening as portrayed is a bit....unrealistic? at least in my experiences it never has, nor have i ever seen this move outside this video before.
I am referring to the counter, not the sweep itself...i have succesfully pulled off the sweep myself..i feel this counter is unrealistic...not the sweep
he is closing the crucifix with his legs in the wrong direction. legs are supposed to be locked towards the feet, which makes it harder for the oppnt to turn their arm and get head to the mat.
marcelo garcias crucifix dvd, if u dont know who he is... haha. it is ok to close this way initially but you want to switch the legs b4 u go for submission. if you leave you legs like he has them its easy for the oppt to get his head to the mat allowing him to flip over the top into side control.
@weesenz1992 well: a common escape from the crucifix is to put your head on the mat and flip over him. tightening the legs toward the feet not only allow u to lock up the arm tighter but makes it easier to shrimp to their back if they put weight into you.
I agree, but some of us do not end up in that position when we do the sweep. What I mean is when I rotate over the leg I do not end on my knees I end on one knee and one foot, also my opponent is usualy off balance before it finishes. It's a great sweep that looks flashy and catches new guys and experts alike off guard. I will try this counter for sure though.
never hit that sequence in a full speed ... never

Doesn't work- you lose the "trapped" arm in the transition. May work on a beginner.

I disagree. Have you even tried this move? Just because he didn't get a good hook of his arm in this video, doesn't mean it can't be done.

kron gracie ATTEMPTED this sweep against marcelo garcia in the ADCC 2009 barcelona.
anybody who practices jiujitsu who has a blue belt and above should know this sweep.

but if you are referring to the counter to the sweep to get to the crucifix than you do have a point.

true. the counter does seem unrealistic.
but the crucifix s the counter to that sweep i just wouldn't do it that way.

very advanced jiujitsu, counter to a star sweep, the star sweep itself is a blackbelt technique.
