I think Dawkins' explanation has to be amended. Single humans were weak; only groups have survived. Therefore any idea that favored the formation of communities was favorable. Here we can understand why religious doctrines, even though entirely false and inappropriate, have favored the formation of more stable groups and favored therefore religions.
