I'm a D-Linemen 5 foot 6 inches around 176 lbs. I need to learn how to properly get off the block. I'm the fastest at getting off the ball so thats no problem for me but i could've made so many more tackles this season if i learned to get off the block quicker. Please help me this was my first year playing ball and i'm a sophmore. Much Love.
@MarkA15 im just asking because on the two steps video it looks like the lineman had more weight back than forward, cuz i play both offense and defense and im just tryin to get my stances right
@HanstheDestroyer215 You're correct in that these are two different stances. The lineman in the Two Steps video is an offensive lineman and this video is most cases a defensive lineman. Most defensive linemen will use this stance because the only direction they are going is forward, thus you want a lot of your weight going forward.
For offensive lineman they can drop back which usually would have their weight on the ball of their feet.
@HanstheDestroyer215 If the offensive line is going to block for a run, their stance might change slightly to better position themselves for a run block. The reason why I say that this video is "most likely" for defensive linemen is because in some middle/high schools they use the defensive lineman stance for their offensive line.
But I think it's always better to learn how the pros do it, in this case would be that the "Two Steps" stance is for OL only and this "Stance" stance is for DL.
@HanstheDestroyer215 And when I say that the offensive lineman stance might change slightly when blocking for the run is because there are some coaching styles that would rather not let the defense know what play is being called by looking at how the offensive line is positioned. For example, if the offensive line is position more upwards, there's a good chance of it being a pass, if they are lined up more forward, there's a good chance of it being a run. If they can't tell which, it's better.
Yea I do, you do it so you can push more power onto the line, and the line is basically staying still to stop them, if they both moved like that there would be some injures.
@ollie4jc How I was taught, it's to keep balance on defense like say if your right hand is down in a 3 point stance then your right foot is behind and vice versa. But like everything else, offense too can vary. Some teams might have everyone line up the same ( ie parallel) or the right side (RG RT) might have their right foot back and the left side (LG LT) might have their left foot back.
@ollie4jc In high school in particular, a lot of coaches might emphasize on being comfortable at first than in correct form. I've played against teams where the LG and LT had their right foot back and this was because they were right handed but playing on the left side.
For defense it didn't matter. I once played both LE and RE with my right foot back. I'm right handed and I was comfortable that way. As you progress and get better, you might have to learn the "proper" way in terms of which side

@pepperdew72 try not to put much weight to start with and when you raise ur butt dont bring it so high bring just above ur helmet and eventually u will get use to the pain onurhands so just keep doing it and u will get better
I've got a question. I've been working on this for a little bit, and I really think i get it now. Its just the part where I keep up my butt. It just seems like a lot of weight goes onto my hand when I raise up my butt. Anything to help?
Hey coach, one question. Ive been playing football for what 2 years (used to play rugby ) and im a d-line. Now umm i hate this 3 point stance. My hand hurts like a M******** u get it xD Have any tips on the standing?
this is a d line stance only. o line use a much more upright stance with hands taking a lot less weight. My mate uses this stance and he's the best d line man I know. You need to be low to him them o line hard as you come out and this stance keeps you down but strong coming up. The arm needs to be extended, ideally if you take it away you should fall over. It keeps you centered forward so if they crash you aint going back. DEFENCE!
there are many different ways to line up, my little brother in middle school lines up similar to this, but they stay on the heels not their balls. In high school we line up on the balls of our feet but do not use our arms for support. we had to have stronger thighs to hold us up but it was worth it.
@PanWitSyr no because soon as we expolode of the ball we have to drive them up the feild idk why tho but we practice football stuff all year to be ready for the season to start we avarge 19-1
@PanWitSyr Some high schools have their o-linemen use a d-line stance. I'm assuming that the thought here is that run block is the base of an o-lineman so high schools teach that to kids. Pass blocking is easy to pick up after. Realistically, a real d-lineman stance as an o-lineman would be difficult for the o-line to step back to pass block since all of their weight was on their hands to begin with. Some high schools run block whether their offense is passing or not, it depends on the school.
The only time i went in a stance similar to this was going in a 4 point stance on our 2 minute offence plays, where you go straight to the ball after the play and just keep running. But other than that, this stance is most definitely for d-line
as a lineman on both sides of the ball, i see that as a faulty stance, with to much lean you almost take your self out, because a good dl will use his hands and pull you to the ground or shoot the gap while pushing him on his side simply because that player has to much lean, i suggest, sink your butt shoot your hands and drive. if that was a defensive stance bravo butt for ol never excess the lean
Yup i agree. i was just being realistic. i mean i know some high schools that teach olinemen to use dline stance when its a run play. i know its obvious but dont ask me. im just saying that youd want to use this stance for defense only but its really up to your coach i guess lol. I agree with you grooms63941.
weight is wayyyy to far out front you are supose to have it so if you lift your hand you slowly fall forward and if your eye were to drop out it would hit your hand
Defense. It could also be for Offense but it's a giveaway that it's going to be a run play since they'd be leaning forward more and it would take a lot of effort to drop back for a pass.
I have the exact stance no joke, just the one thing that i learned not to do that he does in this is keep the hand that not a plant hand infront instead of resting on the knee like he does
I'd say that his hand is in front it's just on the knee. I know what you're talking about and that would look like his arm is actually resting and droopy but his is ready to punch.
IM pretty sure your coach will pick for you in the end. just tell him what your interested in. I'd play O-line, since you have D-line experience already.
You should come off with whatever stance feels good for you. You can do any DLine moves regardless of what stance you're in. If you're right handed most likely you'll be in a right handed stance. The only time stance has to be adjusted is on the Offensive Line. But in high school this doesn't matter since it's more about technique. But once you get to higher schools or college, if a right hander plays Left Guard, he'd have to get used to being in a left handed stance.
when i play Nose Guard (i play O and D varsity) lol...anyways i switch it up to confuse the center sometimes i do a 4 point shade left next play ill do a 3 point shade right....just dont do same thing over and over because then he will catch on.
I play for miss at DE and it took me a grip to go from my HS Stance to College. This is a an good video to practice on. Put the Coaches really dont care of the line. Just be VERY explosive.hand dont matter as much. Sorry i keep going on...
I like the 3-point on defense. I don't think the points matter. I've gone against a team whose o-line uses the 4-point. The only major difference is that the defensive line has more weight on their hands, on the offense it's usually an even distribution.
