  • I have the game too, played it a few times and for me gives a very good feel for the period.

Not the largest wargame, The Europa series takes that title.

  • AWESOME! i have seen some games but not at this size. The map is glued to a sheet metal and the counters are glued to magnets. This way you can hang it on the wall for ever.

  • I've been playing the pc game Hearts of Iron 3. It's similar to these old style wargames from what I can tell (use of counters, lots of rules for things like supply, etc.).

I've never been a wargamer, though I'm a huge history buff. How does one get into these sorts of games in this day and age? I've looked into them a bit, and they're fascinating, but quite intimidating at the same time.

  • @thebigJ1er Good question. Part of it would be the "wow factor" and the simulation. It's a dying art of wargaming, and the complexity is the reason. These games are huge conversation starters, and you can actually why who did what, and why, by running it through on this.

  • @TheJamesDun

Nono, take my question at face value. I can totally understand why someone would get into the hobby, I'm asking literally how to do it. As you say, it's a dying art. If someone wanted to try it to see if it's for them, how can they? I know no one who plays them, and I'm not going to drop $100 on something idk if I'd like, and which I'd have no one to play with. But I am very curious.

So, how does one test the waters?

  • @thebigJ1er Oh, I see. Simply buy the starter's kit. I don't remember what it's called, but it can be purchased for only 25 bucks. Google "Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit" and see what you find.

  • @TheJamesDun

I didn't realize it was so cheap. I looked up some other war games and they were way more expensive. For example, there was something called "Case Blue" that covered the WWII Russian front going for like 400 bucks.

Perhaps I'll give it a go. Are these sorts of games fun for just one person?

  • The German order of battle for this game indicates that eight German infantry divisions were sent from the Pas de Calais to Normandy on July 20, 1944. I wonder what Hitler found out that caused him to send that many divisions on the day of his assassination attempt? I suspect that we are not getting the full story from the history books.

  • Love this game!

  • A great game similar to this is June 6 by GMT. The vid keeps going dark.

  • nice video, but the light seems to fade several times, making it quite difficult to enjoy...

  • Hello from Sweden i have this game it is huge yes but not the biggest one ever made.

The biggest game ever made is the War in Europe game made by SPI i have that one also the map on that game is at least 2-3 times bigger than The longest day game by AH,in the number of counters though i think that this game is superior.

Longest day is a fantastic game the only problem is to find someone to play with....

    regards Mats from Uppsala Sweden

  • this game looks amazing, but so huge.

  • If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for your copy of "The Longest Day"?

  • @HartofLions Well, i'm not the one in the video; but...I remember him telling me that he managed to get it like-new for about 180 dollars? I know that one BoardGameGeek that they are going for about 400.

  • @TheJamesDun ahhhh ok thanks!

  • @TheJamesDun I've had mine since 1981, think I paid 80.00 for it. incredible game. Have yet to play

through the whole game. Also have a SPI title called Watch am Rhine. Another monster game

  • You should check out a game called "case blue" based off of the Russian Front in WWII, I think that it is much larger than the longest day if you play the whole campaign.

  • @HartofLions I just looked it up on BoardGameGeek. It is much larger, alot larger--although I think that this is the largest hex-based game. Case Blue appears more of a territorial game, i'm going to look into it further.
