50%+1 makes sense when you have 2 or 3 competitors, like in US. But in Ecuador we've had elections withmore than 16 candidates for president (last election there were 10), so it is very unlikely to get 50%+1 in first round. That's why normally the 2 most voted are taken to a 'second' round where obviously 50%+1 is achievable. That's why it is surprising this win, they won in first round!!. Poor Ecuador.
Ok. Now I understand why he won so easily. But if you need %40 and a difference of %10 with the next person, doesn't that violate the fundamental principle of "half plus one" of a simple majority in democracy?
