This has to be one of the greatest songs ever written.
I'm a big fan of Zappa, Zepp, Bowie, Foo's, Doohlittle, etc, basically a rock fan. Luckily, I don't let that stop me enjoying marvels like this one. Glen's vocals are as good as it gets.
Mr. Glen, there's only one you. You MADE parts of our lives. Thank you for the strength of staying in there all these years, giving us songs to sing to as we drive. Many of your songs are the ones that come easy, without really thinking about it. You have a lot of people praying for you. :>
My thoughts and prayers to Glen and his family. Alzheimer's is terrible, my heart goes out to them. Glen is one of the alltime greats, and Wichita Lineman will always stand the test of time....
Thank you, Glen for the memories. My own beloved father died of Alzheimer's and it still hurts to think that I had to watch someone I dearly loved and admired turn into a total stranger. He wasn't just my father, he was my dad. And no, they are not always the same thing. I think your children see you that way too. May God watch over you and your family. My heart goes out to each and every one of you.
@melliecharm Just saying you are one idiot that you don't care about a person dying of Alzhemiers, you say he has a cute nose! Wow, we would be better off without idiots like you!
You can just imagine the endless span of telephone wires stretching over the horizon, and you can hear the longing, and loneliness in his voice. I was just nine when this came out, and even I got swept up in the feelings of melancholy from this song.
Glen Campbell is one of the greatest performers of all time. This song has haunted me with its solemn beauty since I was child when I heard it for the first time. His performance here is flawless and I feel its such a sad irony that his present illness is robbing this world of a truly wonderful artist. Glen always remember you always embody The Whichta Lineman and your still on the Line, Thank you so much for so many great years of wonderful music. Glen your voice will forever echo in my soul
You know i need a small vacation , but it dont look like rain?... Jimmy wrote like Bernie for Elton... its up to the singer to put the words together..
@tommieparch you don't get that line? If it were raining, he would have the day off (a small vacation) because you cannot work on energized lines in the rain because water is a conductor. That lyric made perfect sense to me
@BeautyLove1993 Yeah Jimmy wrote most of Glens hits , (he also wrote Mc, Park! & so many other hits) Elvis (the greatest singer ever that couldnt write or play, is proof u can be a singer only if you take the song to heart!. Glen is top of the line & plays guitar, I wonder how good he woulda been without jimmy!
@tommieparch You are preaching to the choir! I had friends who played music with Glen. I was born in Memphis and, yes, Elvis was amazing. If he did not have Jimmy Webb, a songwriter would have found him, but who knows if the tunes would have had such depth? Webb and Campbell both being from the south helped. Glen knew how to sing Webb's country tunes with great emotion...;)
@BeautyLove1993 do you think Richard Harris was a singer or actor! Jimmys greatest song ever is mac. park.. From what I know, ten singers turned M.park down, so his pal richard decided to do it..The rest is history in the evolution of music on the radio ( no american pie long play without Mc park..! it worked out great or we still woulda heard 5 minute songs back than cut to 3 min....
@tommieparch I know Jimmy Webb's music history. I also realize Richard Harris is an actor and appeared in many musicals. I am not an admirer of his voice. I am not a huge admirer of the tune. You are giving me an Elvis lesson now? To a girl from Memphis. Wow.....Glen could have done it without Webb, but the duo made it much more beautiful.
@BeautyLove1993 Lol, No im not trying to give you an Elvis lesson honey!.. I said I wonder if Glen woulda been a star if he had to write his own songs..Webb & others wrote all the hits.. Elvis couldnt write or play, but he had the voice of a god! . I just seen Glen this week in Chicago on his farewell tour (super). Mc Park is a work of art & Richard nailed it..Did you know Three Dog Night had 15 top 10 hits & they wrote none of them ?
This song always reminds me of growing up in Staten Island, New York. Watching the sun set over The Fields, the doc workers, truck drivers, Miller Beer commercials, and smell of my father's Marlboro as he worked on his crimson Dodge Dart. This is a working class man's song if ever there was one.
@kingdomzxmedia i truly appreciate the details of your memory. it is amazing how a simple song can bring back so many detailed memories. i am from Oklahoma and it reminds me of climbing at the Wichita Mountains (no relation to the song) with my mom and dad and stopping at dairy queen to get some ice cream on the way home. great stuff. thanks.
My favorite by far of Glen Campbell's memorable songs. I love the yearning ache of this tune, the mix of pain and hope in Campbell's vocal, and the beautiful strings and thrumming bass just underlines it all. It breaks your heart.
This song is probably - who am I kidding - it IS the greatest love song of all time. When my dad explained the song to me, I nearly cried! To think that I'm only 10yrs old and that song made in 1968 has an influence on me is just amazing!
@60otaku3 But the solo is all Glen! They were buddies from the Wrecking Crew and he had borrowed her 6 string for the solo. :) Killer sound, isn't it?
I was 10 and my older sister bought the "45". Does that mean anything to anyone under 50? Anyway, God Bless Jim Webb (composer). Anyone know what he's up to these days? Is he still alive, I sure hope, etc?
this was one of my grandpa's favorite songs and he used to always listen to it when i was growing up. he killed himself 5 years ago and this song me chokes me up every time i hear it. RIP papa
Per the wiki....In the recording, a notable feature of the orchestral arrangement is the effort of the violins and synthesizer to mimic these ethereal sounds and morse code, and the lyric, "I can hear you through the whine" further alludes to them. If the intent was to actually mimic Morse code, the musical figure between the verses literally spells the word "aaaah" four times (.- .- .- .- ....)
@winefriday Each day, live your life to its fullest. Time will bury us all if we allow it. A Merry Christmas week 2011 and a Happy/Hopeful 2012 to you and yours. I remember this song as if it came out yesterday. John Hartford co-wrote a lot of songs with Glen. My ma met Glen in Arizona back in the 1960s. He's a fantastic guy! I pray that Heaven is good to him -- forever!
@winefriday You can cry on my shoulder, because i woke up one day & wondered where time went..My theme song back then was "live for today" by the grass roots... How wrong i was...
My oh my... i'm only 28 and I feel old music much more than I can feel the new crap. And this song has always been in my hear, it always gives me goosebumps and chills and it always remembers me of saying: There is no cure better than a great song - and Wichita Lineman is definitely one of the best there is!
Thanks Otaku-san for uploading this Glen Campbell favorite. I remember him well. In recent years he has faded from the scene, but in the 1960's, he was on top with music and a hit TV show. Take care, Greg.
This song is outrageously good. It is nearly impossible to write a pop song that is so distinctive. How do you write a love song that is half about working on lines (power or telephone?) in Wichita, Kansas, and have it work so incredibly well?
one cold night during an ice storm a lineman climbed up a pole covered with ice to restore power to my house during a severe ice storm. He has more guts than me.
I never like Glen Campbell's music much. However, ever since I first heard this song in the late sixties, it has to be one of the songs I find myself singing to myself the most. No professional singing. Strictly for singing in the shower and in stairwells. :-)
one of those songs that was arranged w/ a touch magic, add in a story about a real man's love for an obviously beautiful women and you got a winner here
"And I need you more than want you . . . and I want you for all time." Maybe the best, most straightforward yet gentle expression of longing and desire in any pop song ever.
This is the first of my favorite songs ever. The second one is "Do what you Gotta Do" by the Four Tops - both this and Wichita Lineman were written by Jimmy Webb, who gets no credit for anything and that really sucks
Unbelievably amazing....just not enough words to describe what a wonderful talented man Glen is. Grew up listening to him and took right to his music. Listening to his songs takes me back. Sad that he has to deal with alsheimer's. I hope he knows his fans support him 100% and are praying for him.
I had this album when I was 15-16 yeas old! I had such a "crush" on him...I guess a Jersey girl hearing and seeing a "southern" guy brought goosebumps to me too....he was so cute and that southern style, was different. I recently saw the 2011 CMA, and was shocked how old and besheveled he has become and would rather remember him this way....
I wish I turn back to the clock to this very eye opening time. "And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time". OMG, Glen Campbell I listened to all the time growing up. I love him....God Bless you Glen, get well!
I have never been a fan of country music. But some songs, the really GREAT songs, when sung by the truly GREAT artists, transcend genre, and find the larger audience. This is one of those those songs, and Glen Campbell is one of those GREAT artists.I love the other songs he's known for, but this is my favorite.
<3 my lineman :)

I never like Glen Campbell's music much. However, ever since I first heard this song in the late sixties, it has to be one of the songs I find myself singing to myself the most. No professional singing. Strictly for singing in the shower and in stairwells. :-)

How'd you get that backwards 'd' in your emoticon signature?
rage1umr 2 months ago
"'d" is the small letter of "D" on keyboard keys.

@60otaku3 i think what he means is 'how did you get the 'b' which is a mirrored 'd'

one of those songs that was arranged w/ a touch magic, add in a story about a real man's love for an obviously beautiful women and you got a winner here

"And I need you more than want you . . . and I want you for all time." Maybe the best, most straightforward yet gentle expression of longing and desire in any pop song ever.

@snupoo I love the wistful longing in the lyrics, the simple love in his voice, and the aching sweep in the music..

I grew up listening to this guy on my parent's hi-fi in the late 1960s early 1970s
