Majic Jack is a fraud. They advertise free calling and its NOT FREE. Read thier terms before you purchase this useless low quality device (SECTION 6 in their terms). My internet speed is 15 megabits/sec yet the voice keeps cutting. They have the WORST customer and techincal support. STAY AWAY! They suspended my account and its irreversible I lost $60 a week after I activated the device :reason: They calim that i made more then 20% calls than the average cutomer. Filing FTC and BBB today.
This is great! How do you connect a phone line to the magic jack that is already connected to a DSL modem which in turn is connected to the WiFi router?
I would like ot point out that MJ does NOT download ANYTHING to your computer, but an icon. It is strictly plug and play. I can take it anywhere, to a library at school ro work and in about 30 seconds Im receiving calls. The initial download time is just setting up the jack.

I bought this thing almost two years ago because they said as soon as they got Canadian numbers we will be given a local number. I have not been able to use this piece of garbage. The sound quality is really bad and now they want me to pay to get a Canadian number. They have $20 worth of credit in my long distance account and I cannot use this thing to call anywhere. They billed me for the 5 year platinum plan and now they want me to pay to for a new extension after almost 2 years.
b) THEY WILL NOT REFUND ANY MONEY SPENT ON ADDITIONAL FEATURES SUCH AS A PHONE NUMBER OR MULTIPLE YEARS OF SERVICE PAID UPFRONT.
They also have no live customer service only a live chat. No complaints department. No phone number! You'd think they could afford a phone number after they rob you blind.
They will keep all your money if you pay for any addon's and they have very slow customer service. Be prepared to spend at least an hour with a live chatting person if you have an issue
my mom got the magic jack but when we try to work it we can hear the sound in the phone..and everytime we talk to someone we cant hear the person...lol cheap

i'm in the same situation myself. i bought an iphone with plane through cingular last year and now i barely make over 20 minutes of calls on it, mostly from my house. MJ seemed to be the best way for me to save myself from that cellphone bill and just opt to go prepaid. i can even keep my same number when i go prepaid with cingular. still trying to figure out why my MJ calls to cell phones are much clearer than when i call landlines. i still hear them fine, but they hear bad quality and echos.

Yes you have to dial an area code. but without the 1 in front of it. It works really good for me & for $39.99 to me it is a deal, if you think it is junk, then go & pay your life away to the phone company, but for me it works & for you people that keep crying about ooh does the computer need to be on aka (All You Computer Challenged People)? I experienced a lot of breaking up with Magic Jack and the sound quality was terrible! There are so many other FREE VoIP services out there, with customer support. We got free unlimited calls to US & Canada for our business with fastmetrics managed voip.
The important thing was, the quality of sound was great and they have 24/7 tech support, if needed.
hey i brought the majic jack 2 days ago........... Today i tried to install it.....When i place the device in its USB port omputer responds "Found New Hardware"

And at first i was pissed off since i tryed to use a 2 year old cordless phone and it didnt work i contacted the company and they couldnt even tell me or point me in the right direction of what phones work. I then went out and purchased a Uniden for 24.99 at Target and its works good. I called 4 of people that all live within the same state and they said it was very clear once in awhile they heard a little static but nothing mentionable.

It also gave me a chance to use my new digital video camera and try out YouTube, again while helping inform people. So sorry if the noise bothers you but I'm not schooled in broadcasting, just an average Joe.
You have a good voice, but I would recommend a tripod if your camcorder has the tripod screw port. Even light handicams can get heavy after awhile. =)

Yes, about 40 dollars plus about 7 dollars shipping and handling the first year (this includes service for the first year, equipment and shipping). I ordered online from the Magic Jack web site. After that I believe the second year is 20 dollars.
I just got the Magic Jack today, and so far, so good. In expectation I've even dropped my cell phone plan to a smaller calling tier. I travel all over the place, and make a junk load of calls. It sounds tricky but I'm using my smart phone a a modem for my laptop. I plug the Magic Jack into the laptop and use the bluetooth PAN to connect the laptop to the internet. At this point I stand to save hundreds of dollars per year. Suck it land-line and cell phone companies.
Why would anyone get this? There is a program called Skype and it's free...All you need is a gamers headset, you know the headphones with an attached Microphone that you plug into your usb port and then you can call anywhere in your country for free...End of story...
Its not free maybe a year and half ago but it cost money to use skype now to call lanlines and cell phones if they have skype to its free but mose people I talk to are not sitting next to there computer

This thing screwed me good. I put the number on biz cards and used with clients and it just died completely. Still have not received a refund. CHECK THE BBB WEBSITE....there are tons of complaints. Don't buy one!
The magicjack is very unstable and does not work as advertised. I have spent endless hours with their tech support, which is usless.
I like the idea of having a cheep phone, but it seems that in this case you get what you pay for. You get a system that will work only when coaxed and then for only a short time. Tech support is less then usless. I am very dissappointed with the device.

Does anyone know whether MJ provides a mechanism for (1) transfering an existing phone number to the Magic Jack or do you get a random number they provide? and (2) Does it offer a way to implement call forwarding calls to another number?
I Had magic jack on my computer for 2 months, no problems other then the sound will go in and out with like fuzz in it, but once i hang up and redail, everytime it has gone away.. this has happen about 3 out of 10 times...For 19.99 a year and free long distance and local calls, I don't mind it at all...I would say to anyone on a budget, if you really can't aford to pay anywhere from 20 dollars or more a month for phone service, then get this. it is well wroth it.

Most people most of the time can use their computer while using Magic Jack. To use your Majic Jack your computer must be running (turned on). Vonage on the other hand operates right from your router, no computers need to be on.

I like mine so far but havent had it to long, I use it as a second line to put in sons room. Way cheaper then getting another line from local phone company, and it saves my cell phone family plans, peak minutes.
I wont be getting rid of my main line. And with it being so new to me, I do wonder about incoming calls, and hope there isnt a charge with that somehow. Still somewhat leery I guess. Will check my account for extra charges too.

Thinking about cutting back regular phone line to basic, but keep the highspeed internet and use mj for my long distance, but havent made leap yet. Trying to find some extra pennies with everything else so high.
it's nice to have cheap phone service,but downside is u must have computer with internet connection turned on all the time and it doesnt feel like ur owning the " real " phone line if u know what i mean.
I have the magic jack and am fairly well pleased with it except for a few minor problems that I'm sure will be worked out. The biggest is that it would help them and the people buying the MJ if they had an email address to write to. There help pgs need work. The other thing is that although their "chat" is always available other then telling you they are sorry,etc there isn't much they can do. The company has promised a lot and aren't up to speed in all areas. But it's still a good deal.
A couple of months. I just got off the phone with another live chat person, again not satisfied with the non answers I keep getting.
They obviously give these people a script (and it's not even a good one). And at the end you are supposed to rate your satisfaction. How can you rate it? Is it the LCP fault they give them stupid scripts and they have no solutions other then saying they are sorry?If there was an email address to write to they might get real feedback but maybe that's the point.
If you are having problems then it's not the MagicJack itself. It works fine for some of us. like I said the MJ is subject to the same types of issues as cell phones.

The cell phone is great as long as you don't use all your prime time minutes. If you do go over your prime time minutes it is going to cost you a whole lot more that 20 dollars a year.
Yeah...it sounds to good to be true. I got mine and THEN found that my area code is not supported but PENDING. You have to dig a little deeper into the FAQs database to verify your area code before you purchase it. I mean mine worked on my first phone call, but NOBODY in my circle is going to call my number because it is long distance for them. Most of them won't answer an "out of area code" call either.
yeah I'm having the same exerience, people complainning may be because they have a poor internet connection or may be the area has something to do (but I don't think so) my first 7-8 calls have been great just for one of them that was choppy other than that one is fine so far, however for $40 a year and with my plans of saving a lot of money in long distance it is worth it!!! I spend about $10-$15 weekly so by sending this to the other country the magic jack will pay it self the very first month

MJ quit receiving calls 3 weeks after I got it. 5 help folks went through the same steps, but when that did not work, they just quit trying. unit won't receive calls, but they quti trying to remedy or offer a refund. I even helped diagnose the issue by calling the local teleco who told me the fast busy signal callers are hearing means the circuts are busy and usally means not enough circuts. YMAX comm. owns the telephone number and the tel. co. can't help even if they wanted too.
I love mine, my whole house is hooked up to it. I have a program that I can set the Caller ID name and number displayed to whatever I enter. They don't handle Fax data well. (It would not update my tivo's program info) KC area code isn't available yet.
UPDATE: MAGICJACK sent me a 2nd unit after I wrote to them via addresses I found on the BBB website. However, they only sent me a return email indicating they were going to do this (never communicated with me via my phone number I provided for them) and there was NO NAME on the package! Miraculously this one didn't get lost also! Whether the unit actually works, that'll be in my next update :) "All is well that ends well" but this aint the end.
so what happened?? mine is working fine, the second call was choppy after I followed the instruction everything seems to be fine for now, just like you I'll do an update just to inform and keep it honest!!
BUYER BEWARE!!! Ordered mine, never received it perhaps stolen from USPS but company is impossible to contact. They DON'T offer the ability to track your shipment by UPS or Fedex, no 1800 nummber, ZERO customer service not even a method of emailing them! Absolutely rediculous! Hey Dude, Well i ordered mines and requested a tracking number to track my delivery. It costs extra for that but its worth it. My Magic Jack came in about 2 days from when i ordered it. Im fairly new to it still but trying to work out the kinks. So far so good.
Customer Service is bad, after my 14th tech support conversation, I went to the other computer (which was logged in under our son's account) I plugged the MagicJack in and it worked! So from there I figured out that in order to use the MagicJack you have to have a "LIMITED" user account on a computer. I was trying to install this item on "ADMINISTRATOR" user accounts. To prove that I wasn't crazy I created a NEW account and called it "MagicJackUser" and made it a "LIMITED" account and it WOKED!
Dont waste your money! I am trying to return mine, and they provide no address, phone number (don't believe me, check out their website), don't respond to their e-mails, nor do their live-chat people want to talk about returns. They tell you "this is the sales department", and disconnect. (Don't believe me, buy one, then try to return it). I just wrote to Bank of America to prevent them from charging my account.

i'm in the same situation myself. i bought an iphone with plane through cingular last year and now i barely make over 20 minutes of calls on it, mostly from my house. MJ seemed to be the best way for me to save myself from that cellphone bill and just opt to go prepaid. i can even keep my same number when i go prepaid with cingular. still trying to figure out why my MJ calls to cell phones are much clearer than when i call landlines. i still hear them fine, but they hear bad quality and echos.

Yes you have to dial an area code. but without the 1 in front of it. It works really good for me & for $39.99 to me it is a deal, if you think it is junk, then go & pay your life away to the phone company, but for me it works & for you people that keep crying about ooh does the computer need to be on aka (All You Computer Challenged People)? Duh heres a clue ( BUY A THIN CLIENT) to keep on all night like all the rest of us because they are very cheap & they stay on all night & never over heat.

I experienced a lot of breaking up with Magic Jack and the sound quality was terrible! There are so many other FREE VoIP services out there, with customer support. We got free unlimited calls to US & Canada for our business with fastmetrics managed voip.
The important thing was, the quality of sound was great and they have 24/7 tech support, if needed.

purchased the majik jack 5 days ago at Radio Shack. And at first i was pissed off since i tryed to use a 2 year old cordless phone and it didnt work i contacted the company and they couldnt even tell me or point me in the right direction of what phones work. I then went out and purchased a Uniden for 24.99 at Target and its works good. I called 4 of people that all live within the same state and they said it was very clear once in awhile they heard a little static but nothing mentionable.

I did this video and other videos on Magic Jack on the fly to let people know how Magic Jack works from start to finish. It also gave me a chance to use my new digital video camera and try out YouTube, again while helping inform people. You have a good voice, but I would recommend a tripod if your camcorder has the tripod screw port. Even light handicams can get heavy after awhile. =)

Different people with different equipment in different parts of the country get different problems or success with Magic Jack.
It all depends on a combination of circumstances.
My suggestion; if it works for you use it if it does not get rid of it.

Yes, about 40 dollars plus about 7 dollars shipping and handling the first year (this includes service for the first year, equipment and shipping). I ordered online from the Magic Jack web site. After that I believe the second year is 20 dollars.

I just got the Magic Jack today, and so far, so good. In expectation I've even dropped my cell phone plan to a smaller calling tier. I travel all over the place, and make a junk load of calls. It sounds tricky but I'm using my smart phone a a modem for my laptop. I plug the Magic Jack into the laptop and use the bluetooth PAN to connect the laptop to the internet. At this point I stand to save hundreds of dollars per year. Suck it land-line and cell phone companies.

Why would anyone get this? There is a program called Skype and it's free...All you need is a gamers headset, you know the headphones with an attached Microphone that you plug into your usb port and then you can call anywhere in your country for free...End of story...

You plug it in too your usb port then follow on screen instructions and that's it...If people are having problems it is more than likely a problem coming from the product, the hardware and the software installed in the unit itself, I mean your video shows how easy it is to use it, even those that are computer illiterate can figure this out...

The magicjack is very unstable and does not work as advertised. I have spent endless hours with their tech support, which is usless.
I like the idea of having a cheep phone, but it seems that in this case you get what you pay for. You get a system that will work only when coaxed and then for only a short time. Tech support is less then usless. I am very dissappointed with the device.

I Had magic jack on my computer for 2 months, no problems other then the sound will go in and out with like fuzz in it, but once i hang up and redail, everytime it has gone away.. this has happen about 3 out of 10 times...For 19.99 a year and free long distance and local calls, I don't mind it at all...I would say to anyone on a budget, if you really can't aford to pay anywhere from 20 dollars or more a month for phone service, then get this. it is well wroth it.

Most people most of the time can use their computer while using Magic Jack. To use your Majic Jack your computer must be running (turned on). Vonage on the other hand operates right from your router, no computers need to be on.

I like mine so far but havent had it to long, I use it as a second line to put in sons room. Way cheaper then getting another line from local phone company, and it saves my cell phone family plans, peak minutes.
I wont be getting rid of my main line. And with it being so new to me, I do wonder about incoming calls, and hope there isnt a charge with that somehow. Still somewhat leery I guess. Will check my account for extra charges too.

yeah it is fine, I went ahead and left it in the computer room, where i hag out late at night. So when my son called it wouldnt wake up the whole house at 2 am in the morning, havent at this point noticed extra charges. The sound quality is good too people couldnt tell.
Thinking about cutting back regular phone line to basic, but keep the highspeed internet and use mj for my long distance, but havent made leap yet. Trying to find some extra pennies with everything else so high.

I have the magic jack and am fairly well pleased with it except for a few minor problems that I'm sure will be worked out. The biggest is that it would help them and the people buying the MJ if they had an email address to write to. There help pgs need work. The other thing is that although their "chat" is always available other then telling you they are sorry,etc there isn't much they can do. The company has promised a lot and aren't up to speed in all areas. But it's still a good deal.

A couple of months. I just got off the phone with another live chat person, again not satisfied with the non answers I keep getting.
They obviously give these people a script (and it's not even a good one). And at the end you are supposed to rate your satisfaction. How can you rate it? Is it the LCP fault they give them stupid scripts and they have no solutions other then saying they are sorry?If there was an email address to write to they might get real feedback but maybe that's the point.

The cell phone is great as long as you don't use all your prime time minutes. If you do go over your prime time minutes it is going to cost you a whole lot more that 20 dollars a year.

Yeah...it sounds to good to be true. I got mine and THEN found that my area code is not supported but PENDING. You have to dig a little deeper into the FAQs database to verify your area code before you purchase it. I mean mine worked on my first phone call, but NOBODY in my circle is going to call my number because it is long distance for them. Most of them won't answer an "out of area code" call either.

yeah I'm having the same exerience, people complainning may be because they have a poor internet connection or may be the area has something to do (but I don't think so) my first 7-8 calls have been great just for one of them that was choppy other than that one is fine so far, however for $40 a year and with my plans of saving a lot of money in long distance it is worth it!!! I spend about $10-$15 weekly so by sending this to the other country the magic jack will pay it self the very first month

MJ quit receiving calls 3 weeks after I got it. 5 help folks went through the same steps, but when that did not work, they just quit trying. unit won't receive calls, but they quti trying to remedy or offer a refund. I even helped diagnose the issue by calling the local teleco who told me the fast busy signal callers are hearing means the circuts are busy and usally means not enough circuts. YMAX comm. owns the telephone number and the tel. co. can't help even if they wanted too.

I love mine, my whole house is hooked up to it. I have a program that I can set the Caller ID name and number displayed to whatever I enter. They don't handle Fax data well. (It would not update my tivo's program info) KC area code isn't available yet.

UPDATE: MAGICJACK sent me a 2nd unit after I wrote to them via addresses I found on the BBB website. However, they only sent me a return email indicating they were going to do this (never communicated with me via my phone number I provided for them) and there was NO NAME on the package! Miraculously this one didn't get lost also! Whether the unit actually works, that'll be in my next update :) "All is well that ends well" but this aint the end.

BUYER BEWARE!!! Ordered mine, never received it perhaps stolen from USPS but company is impossible to contact. They DON'T offer the ability to track your shipment by UPS or Fedex, no 1800 nummber, ZERO customer service not even a method of emailing them! Absolutely rediculous! Probably wouldn't have worked anyway. Can't trust a company that hides - Question is, how'd they get those endorsments on their page?...hmmm?

Customer Service is bad, after my 14th tech support conversation, I went to the other computer (which was logged in under our son's account) I plugged the MagicJack in and it worked! So from there I figured out that in order to use the MagicJack you have to have a "LIMITED" user account on a computer. I was trying to install this item on "ADMINISTRATOR" user accounts. To prove that I wasn't crazy I created a NEW account and called it "MagicJackUser" and made it a "LIMITED" account and it WOKED!

Dont waste your money! I am trying to return mine, and they provide no address, phone number (don't believe me, check out their website), don't respond to their e-mails, nor do their live-chat people want to talk about returns. They tell you "this is the sales department", and disconnect. (Don't believe me, buy one, then try to return it). I just wrote to Bank of America to prevent them from charging my account.
