For Doctor Who fans - young Scrooge here is played by Mark Strickson, who played Vislor Turlough on Who. It's nice to see him in a completely different role.
@Mavarin - I knew young Scrooge looked familiar ! Turlough ! I like both the George C. Scott version & Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol, even though it's actually been 2 or 3 Christmases since I've managed to see either one, for some reason. They're both great adaptations of this classic / iconic story.
I love how Scrooge flashes an ironic smile then turns his face downward upon hearing his younger self promise to "go through life with a smile" on his face. It's a subtlety Scott brings to Scrooge that no other actor has displayed.
Nobody brings it like George C. Scott. That grim smile, pulling at his face as he watches young Scrooge woo the girl who got away, is scarier than all three ghosts put together.
Fezziwig. I love Fezziwig. Dickens really understood the way even the worst of us is so very fond of the very cool people we've had the privilege to know in life. It's such a sad and beautiful feeling, remembering them, once they're gone.
Hey you should show the whole movie of this , or show everything of Marley's Ghost wen Scrooge is walking to his home, when Jacob Marley appears as his door knocker and Marley's Ghost
Scott's portrayal is arguably as good, or BETTER, than that of Alistair Sim. The scene in the graveyard is astonishing! His transformation is beautifully realized in this excellent adaptation.
@binkle1 Both Scott and Alastair Sim are excellent, but Scott I think does it a bit more naturally without overracting. The graveyard scene is so powerful, that's where you can really see the transformation. Sim, I think, overacts a bit at times, but still does a great job
Without doubt --- THE greatest version of this story. George C Scott and co pull off the performances of their lives. Scrooge's redemption at the end is played better than any other version - when he visits his nephew (and nephew's wife) at the end you really feel his is reclaiming his family - and this is the beginning of a new, happy era for everyone :-) Love it!
Carrey's performance IS very good (remember, he really DID have to physically act the part, because it was "capture motion," with sensors all over his body), but despite the excellence of the IMAX-3D film, I still like the 1971 animated version better. Still, Carrey has really, really grown as an actor. I don't think you deserved to be spammed for you comment at all!
@fallboyout George C. Scott portraying Scrooge puts Carrey to shame. Of course, Jim Carrey is pretty much a joke (literally and figuratively) and one of the most f**king annoying actors of all time.
@Kihotay George C. Scott is a brilliant actor, and this is my favourite adaptation. Scott doesn't portray scrooge, he IS Scrooge, that scene in the end when he is at his own grave and starts sobbing and pleading with the ghost of the future to spare him is so perfectly portrayed, and then when wakes up all giddy then goes to his nephew and his nephew's wife, and next day gives Crachitt a raise. . . everything is played just right!
That song is titled "Sir Roger de Coverley". There is a good rendition of that song here on youtube done on accordion, but if any one can tell me where to find it done on fiddle, please let me know.
This is the best version of A Christmas Carol. Second is the Patrick Stewart version.
