Had the U.K had a healthy Sonia Lanaman on that last leg it would have been VERY interesting. Sonia beat Gohr on the last leg of the European sprint relay final in 1982 with a strapped leg to get the silver medal. I believe she also beat Gohr on the last leg of a World Cup sprint relay final, though I'm not certain.
Yes, you absolutely right - both those races are on my Youtube. You might have guessed I'm a bit of Sonia fan! Her injuries certainly hindered her in championships status. In 1977 she ran 10.93w (3.6 wind) and in 1980 11.11w (2.1 wind) And all that with just training 3 or 4 times a week! She was a natural talent.
With modern training principles, sports science not to mention U.K lottery funding. Today Sonia would be a major player on the World scene and gaining medals all over the place.
Marlie Göhr was a lightyear behind Jackie Joyner-Kersee (USA). Easy to blame DDR for doping because DDR does exist no more. Did east-german men take especially load of medals compared with western countries - NO. Did all the western countries use doping for getting success - YES.
The East German men in the 70s and 80s regularly took more medals than West Germany and would beat them in the world cup despite only having about a quarter of the population. Women's athletics was underdeveloped in the west until athletes were allowed to make money from the sport in the 80s.
Thanks for posting this. I watched it as a kid and recall the British squad so nearly getting past the East Germans. Always remembered Shirley Thomas on last leg. Shirley we salute you!
Marlies' Gohr could run very fast pitch in this year.Gohr made a world record 10.88 again. If Evelyn Ashford run with Gohr in this year,Evelyn could get a victory from Gohr?
este equipo se comenzo a forma a partir del añ0 1976(marlis goor hizo de primer relevo 9 ) NO TENGO DUDAS DE LOS 41,37(DE 1985) PUDIERON AUN MEJOR EN EL AÑO 1985 SE ESTABA TOTALMENTE FORMADO Y ESTABLECIDO Y CON GRAN EXPERIENCIA(Y PASARON POR TODOS LOS CONTROLES DE ESA EPOCA-
