I don't think Obama is politically motivated in this decision since he consistently sacrifices political capital by angering both liberal and conservatives. I think he was simply convinced that leaving Afganistan would diminish our effectiveness in weakening the influence of al Qaeda in Pakistan. I think the solution to this complex state of affairs is not found in typical liberal or conservative ideology. Obama has the most credibility with me when it comes to a longer term solution.

i waited to listen to the speech at work today. its like he was saying the words, but there was no passion behind it really. im ambivalent about the troop escalation in Afghanistan...and I think thats actually a problem when people stop caring. I can see why its a huge resource suck, but at the same time we have to clean up the mess we made. we cant just leave like the Soviets did
