Circle, triangle and square are the three most common simple geometrical shapes. He eliminated the square by mentioning it. As simple as that :). My first suggestion was circle and triangle, and I had to PAUSE the video in order to think of other two. I chose diamond and trapezoid, but it took me a couple of seconds to figure them, whereas the circle&triangle came instantly.

And there are primarily only two other basic shapes people are so familiar with (circle and triangle). And he just use two random colors out of three (red, green, and blue). So as a matter of probability, he was likely to get it the same as others. Plus he made the gesture at 0:10 to suggest a circle inside a triangle.

i really don't think the hands did much, for most people triangle, circle, and square are simple, and he removed the option of square. And I think the color is based on being more common, green and red are simple linguistically, and popular favorites.

As lots of people figured out, it's because he makes a circle inside the slant of a triangle with his left and right hand and respectively. The reason you pick a red circle and a green triangle is because the cufflink for the circle hand is red, and the cufflink for the triangle hand is green.

And as for the reason that people aren't getting the colours right? It's because this was made for TV, and the youtube video quality means you can't see the colours (especially green) that well.

He tells us not to think of a square and he sort of forms the triangle and circle with his hands. The square is also far too simple for most people, as we probably thought, so in our minds we want to be unique and pick ones he cannot match. Most people don't consider the rhombus, the trapezoid or a pentagon to be simple shapes. This is not true. Those shapes _are_ simple but not common enough for us to think up on a whim. Neat trick though.

My guess is, that people who doesn't see this video in higher quality focuses on the trees and sky behind and there comes the colors...
