The fantastic geniuses of the era played because they were artists and it was all about the music. They all played together, collaborated, appreciated each other's work, and had genuine love for what they did. They shared their gift with all of us! Thank God for Ellington, Armstrong, Basie, Holiday, Fitzgerald, e.t.c.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us! Duke was the man. How I wish I had been able to witness him in action! Such class, such talent, such joy in life-even when it is not perfect!
A very young Billie Holiday prior to becoming a user of vice stronger than pot. Her voice was still soft and had a tenre that was sensuous and smooth, although her Lady in Satin , her voice was able to tell the story of her trials and tribulations with her abusive managers/lovers, and vice. Lady Day was a wonderful chaunteuse.
This is a gentleman who was an exemplary musician and band leader. His music resonates the era clearly. He wrote certain songs to showcase his musicians i.e. Ben Webster, Paul Gonzales... excellent footage.
Some people could hear a bird sing and think it sounds like shit because it doesn't conform to the tempered scale, or has no electric guitars to accompany it. Duke Ellington could have become a bum if he wanted. He didn't. He did something most of us will never do - get out there and make something wonderful for the world to experience.
hey get your head out of your asss, pen. no Duke = no Miles Davis. he paved the way for so many. knocked down doors blacks didn't walk through. learn something, then come back and have real intelligent conversation about the music.
Seeing Billie in this is awesome. I had heard about this, but this is my first time actually seeing it. She looks so young, plump, and fresh here -- a stark contrast to the harsh and drawn drug-battled look of her later years. But her distinctive sound and vocalization, however, were always there.
it is just me, or is the guy you were talking about, Scatman Crothers, in the dance section when he dances with the first woman... is he cripwalking?? sure looks like it :P
That's my dad's old friend dancing in the "Dance" section of the film. His name is Scatman Crothers, he was also in one flew over the chuckoo's nest and the shining. I can't believe he got paid for shoving Ella Fitzgerald to the ground! He died in the 80's, and unfortunately I never met him in my lifetime, it is a real pity since I am now a jazz musician. Scatman actually attended my parent's wedding. Thank you so much for posting this video, it means a lot to me.
It's not just the music... the images are great, perfectly in tune with the music. Whose this film?

This is incredible. It is actually a peice of history. Duke Ellington was still coming out with tunes and playing with his band in the 1970's.

Lady in Satin was recorded not long before her death. A few months before I believe, the record still makes me cry to this day.

Billie was only nineteen, but had already listened to a lot of Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong.
