  • If the ground is used as ther return for the neutral, wouldn't the earth breaker tripped?

  • pure stupididty

  • @bucker89 Ignorance is no excuse for doing it right. If you don't-hire someone who does.

  • Are they trying to kill someone?

  • Sparky How Many Jobs Do You Walk In On and The Wiring Is So Messed You Just Rip It All Out and Start Over The Right Way. That One I Would Just Rip Out and Ran All New Lines

  • Thanks for the help. My first floor has been easy as it was wired by pros in the 40s. I just progressively pulled new 12g THHN wire to replace the old cloth covered wire. As I did that I replaced all old outlets with grounded ones. No one lives on the second floor and after seeing your videos I removed the two hot lines going upstairs and wire nutted them off until the spring when I can redo them when it is not freezing but instead 100 degrees plus. haha. But better than the house burning.

  • I'm not a sparky and I know this is a complete mess! I'm a builder, so do have some idea. Well I'm a sparky in comparison to this mess... haha!

  • @Awake4Truth Pretty crazy stuff out there in the real world.

  • @sparkyUonline Your telling me?! Half of my channel is dedicated to showing just how crazy the real world is! Watch the 'Killuminati The Movie' folder on my channel for a start. It's a real eye opener. Watch it and tell me what you think...

  • here's away to save money, don't buy plugs for cables , just push the bare cables straight into the plug sockets, try it, it really works,

  • I was working as a sparky in the UK for my self. Its A holes like this and DIY'ers that make these time bombs but no one cares because it works! They under cut you, it takes them 1/4 as long and they take your money. If you wanna see what I mean check out Ultimate handyman UK on youtube... He is not an electrician, does not know his regs and claims to be a professional...

  • Following a burst pipe under the concreted kitchen floor saw a thick Grey Electric cable running under the concrete and kitchen tiles. Dreading whether this might affect or cause problems in the future.

  • Looks like wiring that you would see here in NZ as the Red is a phase wire here and the black is the neutral but using the earth wire as a neutral is a big no no , someone was trying to save cores! but did a shitty job of it.

  • LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THOSE Y SYSTEMS................. Y IN THE HELL DID THEY DO THAT. LOL

  • @Mrmckissick Too Funny!! Haven't heard that one before.

  • @Mrmckissick

    now that's witty :D

    definitly need to remember that!

  • they had a dimmer on that sparky.lol iv ran into that before to....

  • Sparky: why did you end up working on this or for that matter any of the "Its beyond me" messes?

  • @SirDeanosity It's my job to fix these problems. Sometimes.like this home, you start out with a few repairs and all of a sudden you end up w/a mess so you fix it.

  • @sparkyUonline Don't know why that didn't occur to me. My brain must have been dead when I posted this comment. I have been asked by people to fix problems in stuff they have done and as you say one little thing leads to bigger things.

  • What a fucking mess

  • No Idea why he tied the ground with the neutral but maybe he was reidentifying the white as a hot!!

  • @brianbobillier198107 Yea he knew how to make it work but he did not do it correct.

  • This is the wiring of their brains, too.

  • I think I know why they do that, I seen a contractor doing just that, I gave him shit, but he said as in your photo a BX wire was used, and that the BX caceing would act as the ground, I told him yoya that can be the case but it is still totally wrong and unsafe, he did not care.

  • This lazy POS should be jailed.

  • Why is American wiring so complex and different, i live in NZ and our wiring is up to standard. All our wiring is clearly marked Earth, Neutral, and Active. That's all there is too it. Btw We have 240 volts. I have never seen wires like that my hole life.

  • People will be glad to use pro electricans but can't affprd the extremely high price for such little work. Case in point--Needed to upgrade my electric panel and got two quotes. both over 1,000 bucks. Bought all parts and did it myself in an 8 hr period for total cost 245.00 what a difference from the union thugs

  • @Olddog231 Union electrician don't go to homes . They work in commericial construction . That's just a regular old guy ripping you off

  • what is a bath bar?

  • @windoes98se A light that is mounted above a mirror in your bathroom.

  • This probably done by unlicensed cheap labor who claims knew everything. Whoever the chap should put in jail...he could set the house in fire or had someone electrocute.

  • here in australia its illegal to have bare earth wire

  • Every metal surface in his house could become live.

  • srry ...srrry .... so when ppl need help let me know , cuz this guy can read google thats it!!!!

  • oh r u in the states bros ...maybe thats y ur a mess ahahaah when u need help wiring something let me know

  • ahahaha ur the reason y ppl r not getting apprentiships ...fak right it with a crayon ahahaha ... a ground as neutral... u messed up half the world man... 3 wires connected together ,,,really... your obviously a residential monkey ,,,,cuz we all know industrial troubleshooting on this would have lost u eh...ahahahah ...fak make kids books dude cuz ur lost in the real world,,,

  • Please make more vedios

  • This may be the worse wiring I have seen. An you wonder why house go up in smoke!!!!!! Post a video showing how to clean this mess up.

  • been doing it for 21 years and have see my share of bad home onwer wiring. was in a bad one a few weeks ago and its hard to tell them thats its wrong and illegal, but all they know that it works and wont pay you to do it right

  • I saw this video a few years back... and didn't know any better... now I have taken some classes in Electrical and watching this again makes total sense!

Thanks Sparky, I've learned so much from your videos!

  • A few shots before the job I also saw shitty wiring at a marina before no ground open covers outside extension cords used as wiring and the first best looking outlet I charged the boat on I had a reverse polarity alarm go off great way to start of the summer lol atleast I'm moving it to the Hammond marina where there is actual code

  • I could see someone doing this because the ground is as thick as the other cables so

They use it as one and don't know what grounding means or why it is important whoever the hell

Installed that probably is used to

Working on low voltage electrical which has no ground at all like 12 - 24 volts or so another reason is they saw the screw on the neutral in copper and thought exposed ground is that I don't know why bars generally have bad wiring either than the bartenders bribing eletricians with a

  • am practical couliffy electrician basically very good in house wiring and instillation, domestic, industrial wiring and more............and am now jobless am looking for help so that i can work hard and save some money and go back to school.for advance level...................thank you.........................ishaq...............abubakar

  • bad wiring

  • WOW lmao, i see this all the time. this was done by someone who knows just enough to be dangerous

  • wow what a hack job

  • Wow... Great video of how not to do things!

  • lol i would scrap all that hack job wiring and start all fresh with all new wires. The new untrained electricians can NOT be trusted and ussually is hard to find a resonably priced electrician that actually can do a good and up to code job. I curently am an Electrician and hate it when "farmers" think they can fix or do just about anything...SERIOUSLY this is not a joke. Power is dangerous and should not be toyed around with like this. Please leave it to the professionals to do!

  • @ITSxBLEH how do you know this wasn't a ""professional"" who did this work?

I have seen the pros mess shit up worse than anyone else.

  • @gtrfurby then there not a pro....

  • All that I can say is WOW! How did they do all of this with out starting a bad fire? Well from the looks of the plastic box that you showed in the video there was some heat issues in there, but still... How stupid can someone be? That just killed me, and I got lost with all the excess errors that the did in all of that mess. That passed code also? OH HELL NO! They deserve to be shot! All in all.. Good video.

  • I love "How Not To" videos.

  • I know why people do this. It's so they don't have to pull another wire. Is it the right way to do it? No. Does it save you from having to pull a new wire? Yes.

  • I addded to our Electrician Playlist at bin952 channel. Good job reporting on bad job. :>)

  • some people are so stupid and shouldnt touch anything electrical. electric is no joke, someones stupidity can create a hazard in a home and cause a fire or kill someone.

  • So what us the purpose of combining the grounds and neutrals? I've wired many things myself and have never heard of such.

  • @kyle1081 you cant combine grounds and neutrals. the ground is not meant to be a source of power. the only time you can combine them is in a main panel. in a sub panel they have to be separated

  • Весь спектр электромонтажных работ от башкирской компании "ТЭМ" по адресу bashelectro.ru

  • That is a completely mess! according to the code electrical equipment shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner. That is just one of the violations here.

  • Its a old school bootleg ground that half ass people do in older homes with 12/2 (no ground) wire vrs running 12/2(with a ground). They bonded these cans and switches here (who knows why) and that created a dirty EGC which in theory is not "that bad" considering its very hard to get a hit from a neutral (unless holding the hot also, or its back feeding from a lighting ballast.). Though it is totally wrong and not code. Bonding should only happen in the panel at the 1st means of disconnect.

  • @ElectricTN thats right at the first means of disconnect an thats it. some people dont know that.

  • I've noticed on air conditioners (240V) people install 120V controls and use the ground for a return. This kind of thing goes on all the time ???

  • @hurrayupplease That is incorrect according to the code. There was a time that it was allowed. That is why older homes have 3 wire dryers and ranges. Now you MUST use a 4 wire circuit for these appliances. Of course, adding controls to a UL listed product violates current code to. But, that is another topic.

  • @Ripu2 I cant find the original post... Brief summary 240v uses one of the legs as a return therefore not " neutral" is needed. Both are single phase but 120 is one leg of 120 that needs a return. Now; the older dryers were 240 because the utilized 240volts and a neutral is not needed, though ground required. Should be 10 awg on a 30amp. Anyway when the new dryers hit the scene with the 4 prongs it is still 240V but also runs 120v to its componants, hence the return)neutral, 4th wire.

  • @Ripu2 P.S> With that said it IS NOT CODE unless you are wiring a new home or dryer. Existing 3 prongs do not have to be converted over to a 4 wire/(10-3 vrs 10-2) unless ur installing a newer dryer. You can change out the factory whip but only from 3 wire to 4 wire receptacle and you MUST leave the bonding jumper in.

  • I have always ben taught that you've got Hot, Hot2 and Ground.

And that prevents anyone from doing shit like that.

  • This is why I don't get into residential repairs..... you never know what kinda shit you're gonna find and you never know what somebody's got fucked up from 20 years ago

  • is there a site that i can get sample questions of the journeymans test/exam, also any other exams for example Master electricians, thank you

  • I accidentally connected a white wire to a Ground wire without knowing and everything worked. The next morning I went to finish the work and noticed that it was wrong and notified the owners who called a family electrician who said," Just make sure he does'nt call the cops and sue you if he gets a shock, just tell him to put it back the way it was" Crazy Humans...

  • I have a limited understanding of electrical wiring. What are the problematic symptoms of this wiring setup?

  • @jessi330 The grounded conductor (neutral) carries the un-balanced load of an electrical circuit to ground. The grounding conductor (ground) should NEVER have power on it. It is a safety system that is designed to be used ONLY if something goes wrong, and if power goes across this grounding conductor, the over current protection (fuses, breakers, etc) should trip or open the circuit.

  • @Ripu2 In theory this holds true. Though if it was ran THHN or insulated and say you forgot to pull a neutral. You could use the ground as a neutral (if pulling wire not ROMEX or bare copper). The reason I wanted to mention this is because its important to understand the color is just a color and always test (hot stick/wiggy/mulit-meter/ etc before you assume. The important thing to take from this comment is bare copper wire cant NOT( per NEC) as a current carrying conductor.

  • @ElectricTN Not on any of my projects you wouldn't. A grounding conductor is exactly that, and should never be used as a grounded conductor. Anyone on a project of mine, hooking a green or green/yellow, or bare wire to a white, or grey wire would be fired on the spot. No exceptions. That being said, yes, the color doesn't mean anything unless you are wiring by the NEC, which tells you what colors are allowed where.

  • WoW, that was some screwy wiring going on there. Thanks for sharing this info.

  • Hmm... how do you keep your grounds safe from retarded electricians... industrial diodes. :D

  • I really don't see the big deal here. I've seen a lot worse than this. And I cant count the number of homes that are still running on the 2 wire systems without a ground at all. And if anyone were to be in the switch box I would hope they wouldn't have the light on.That gets rid of your return load theory. You should do a real electrical video covering Industrial or Commercial grade electrical work. For anyone reading this DONT get into wiring houses theres no money in it.Or brain work,

  • LOL.....not to mention the fact that there is now current on an uninsulated conductor. As they say....a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

  • Unfortunately switching the neutral is rather common.

  • What a mess if this is typical wiring in the USA ,glad im not a sparks over there.lol.

  • @shumble69 Its not dude stop talking smack

  • @67tr876 Really DUDE, i have to take your word for it.lol.

  • @shumble69 NO really you dont know what are house's are like . Thats whats called lazy dumb ass work right there man ! You get lazy ass's and you get good work. If you dont live hear then dont talk smack !

  • @67tr876 Thats cool my friend just going by what i saw.

  • @shumble69 well ya thats in that house but if you think the hole USA is like that then that is a BIG BIG stereotype !

  • so that's how you do a 3 into 2.. haha i'll make sure and NOT do this... sketchy..

  • O bet that person thought they were so clever when they did that. lol Side note: I hate those stab-in connectors! Easy install but I do not like the problems they give. I'll replace them rather than use them myself.

  • I wired my can just like you showed and it burnt down my house! Thanks A LOT MAN!!!! >=(

  • @woodster2k1 lol your a doofus

  • @OnemanSkit haha =P

  • first thing i remember taught was "assume everything is HOT" until you check it with your own (verified) meter/wiggy/tick trace taking someones word for your own life is a very dangerous thing to do. a wire or lug looks the same whether its HOT or not.

  • Scary stuff. Looks like somebody got their 'advice' from Home Depot. Good thing nobody got hurt.

  • Quite interesting, a real nice mess! I find it amusing how you guys call the earth ground and live hot. Over here in the Uk its generally earth, neutral live. Or earth neutral and phase. Obviously i have heard people call the earth ground, but never the live a hot. Anyhow, i still followed what you were saying.

    Uk Sparky.

  • wow! this is real rigged.

  • you cant use the ground as a neutral though you can use the white for a carring current if it is permatnely marked

  • I repair garage doors. One homeowner (neighbor) wired his own garage. He hardwired the door opener into the line. His brother was an electrician and was going to check his work but unknown to me had not been there yet. Down at the onoff switch he had broken the neutral to turn the opener off so when I got hold of the hot my other hand was touching the conduit. hahaha I now carry a small voltage detector and I check everything I do not care what people tell me.

  • Hope you can help me out. I am currently updating my kitchen and there is a garabe disposal connected to a switch. I removed the disposol and hooked up a outlet instead of a switch and with a tester I have power to the outlet but nothing will work when i plug something in it. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

  • Nice post, actually I really enjoyed while I was reading that post.... you are superb. Thanks

    Relemac

  • sparky,

lots of self proclaimed expertshere on youtube telling folks how to wire for themselves[ expert village, askthe builder] i know that i went to school for 5 years and served a 5 year apprenticeship to learn the trade, i think it is dangerous and irresponsible for these hacks to assume that they know what they are spewing to the public- we need to shut them down and expose their lack of qualifications

  • Wow i see this kinda stuff at work all the time. Looks like someone got on you tube and did it themselves

  • WOW! Jacklegs will never cease to amaze me hahaha. It takes way more effort to do things incorrectly than just doing them right the first time!

  • Advice to all prospects to become electrician, this video shows exactly why is difficult now on days to hire an un known contractor, people must have a hight sense of integrity and pride to become a contractor in the HVAC,Plumbing and Electrical field, cutting corner and ripping off people will get you out of the bussiness in no time, most city inspector got experience and trying to fool 'em it's just simply idiotic you will not become a contractor over night must get hands on training!!

  • Hey I'm looking into becoming an electrician. Back when I was in school I was pretty good in algebra but now I'm a little lost because I haven't done any problems for a long time. So my question is where would one go to get good training to become an electrician or should I try being a helper from some contractor because I am currently unemployed with very little money.

  • @CombatWarrior420 Giving your status I would look for a job with a contractor. This is my opinion only-see if you can find a smaller company that can give you some one on one training. Some may argue, and they will, that going with a larger company is better.Once you start making some cash I would start out with a codes class sometimes held at you local comm college.

  • @CombatWarrior420 hell yes get in with a licenced contractor learn as much as you can.

  • in the uk things seam more neat and ordered, that twist lock seams too much like scotch locks to me, when i was a auto electricians, scotch locks were so lame, but everyone did not understand why they would sell the product if it was as bad as i said it was, good old soldered joints with shrink wrap and additional insu tape, just to be sure to insu the joint :-)

  • To a brit it all looks a recipie for trouble, out cables are manufacturd with blue and brown with the earth or ground wires being covered by green and yellow sleaving, to our new regs all wiring has now to be protected by rcd / rcbos which will hopefully stop borrowed neautrals

  • As a home inspector I see similar situations so often and new home construction is not an exception.

    Great videos, keepem coming.

  • First off, I would guess this was not done by a homeowner, unless he or she had some previous training or experience. I would hope this was not done by a company with any intergity, or respect for lives for that matter. More than likley, this was a friend of someone who knew just enough to be dangerous. I see it all the time on side work. As electricians, we all should be doing things correctly, not only for our customers, but for any real electrician comming behind you.

  • I don't plan on sharing neutrals but can u give me a better explanation of why you don't share neutrals so i get a better understanding? Is it because if you share them you will be overloading the path back and that's not good?

  • You know a helper or apprentice didnt do that either, they wouldnt be able to understand at that point what was going on, its a shame that someone who knows how to do it right would rather leave grounds as neutrals and so dangerous. If i ever get shocked with shared neutrals like that on a service call I'm going to find that asshole

  • Go get em'!!! They need to be stopped!

  • ummmm at 2:46 that looks like amosite asbestos insulation around your switchbox there man :S

  • Not likley from a house built in the mid 90's

  • i take electrical at a vocational high school. its only my feshman year. and i can already tell its gonna be a challange

  • Hang in there and good luck.Just don't do stupid shit like this and you'll be ok.

  • What type of program did you use to make this particular video? I've seen it before. It allows you to zoom in on an example and it has a yellow circle on the pointer... Thank you

  • I use Camtasia 6.

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pray that whoever it was didn't also rewire the switch box as well! I would be tempted to rip it that wiring all the way back to the switch box for safety's sake.

Wow. People get killed & fires start from wiring like this. Although, my father once worked in a remodeled research lab, where their electricians had somehow miswired the 120v outlets to 240v! Smoked the chart recorder solenoids good.

  • your hella gay

  • This was probably done by lazy retarded qualified electricians.

  • yeeehaaaaa cowboy passing thru

  • I agree - very dangerous for us electricians to go in and repair such screw ups! ELECTRICAL WIRING WORKS VERY WELL AND SOMETIMES EVEN BETTER WHEN IT IS ALL DONE WRONG AND DANGEROUS!

  • this is the kind of shit that hurt or kills us real electricians

  • @Ferraro8191 Kill you? No. Cause a Fire? Yes.

  • wow ! thats sad ...homemade 14/3. It's amazing what people will do to cut corners.

  • homeowner? I see RAT crews do this stuff all the time

  • fryerkid your right...

I reckon there about 20-30 years behind europe at least 35 years behind us English. TOTAL SHIT

  • Does everyone there doing electrical work do it perfect?Talk shit to them!

  • Guess you never heard of Lucas Electrics.

  • If it was done Union IBEW u would not have these problems

  • It was done by a homeowner!

  • No, he would have other problems that the IBEW guy created.

  • whoa whoa whoa buddy...what are you saying here...Union hands do 10x better work than Rat shops...come holla at me @ IBEW Local 136

  • lol these guys are write offs... how they passed inspection is beyond me..

  • In some places that would be considered an excellent job!!!

  • thats the sad part about it

  • An important legal case was based on the dead of a boy who got electrocuted by touching an ungrounded garage door, the ground wire in the 12-3 romex was used as conductor for a ligth.

  • makes ya feel any better just saw a house today that ran 14 for a dryer outlet and had a 150 amp main on a 100 amp service....fuckin retards

  • 14 for a dryer? Where do people get the info to does this crap?

I'm thinking they had to modify the panel to get that 150 in!

  • So that's what I did wrong...nah I am kidding..

  • look at this american wireing how ruf can u get

  • I came across similar bad wiring as your vid shows, but worse. My church asked me to check behind someones work. The guy had travelers crossed, taped joints. I turned the main off. Spent half a day inspecting and fixing 8 out of 13 attic boxes with crossed wiring, no bonds, neutral-ground bonds...you name it. The only reason a fire didn't happen, as far as i can tell, the legs never crossed. Must be careful going behind others. Always use a meter. People do things for a quick buck. Beware.

  • This is why people get hurt. They get in a hurry, owners don't want to spend the money to fix it right, and "some"electricians are lazy.Homeowners think they can watch a few videos and rewire a house??If you don't know what you are doing-leave it alone!

    Thanks for your comment btcsc.

  • Skool maks mee soopar smartt!!

  • holy shit that wireing looks so dangerus i would be afrade of your house burning up if u dont get it fixed

  • 14/3 anyone.. hahahaha

  • You're on the right track, but in commercial/residential wiring, you must use 12AWG-solid

In this case the electrician should have used 12-3 in order to safely have 2 circuits(one for the light one for the fan, a N and a G)

  • excellent educational video ---keep it up--im learning a lot thanks

  • yea this is why some people should stick to plumbing or landscaping... haha just messing around please no one get offended

  • Just more reason that I am in search for why people do the things they do when it comes to our industry.Anything for that matter.

  • Could have been worse....they could have used duct tape instead of electrical tape.

  • or just use their heads and use sheathing xD

  • For some reason our fellow electricians are stupid. Our trade rivals bridge building in concern and safety for the public, yet it seems to easy to too many homeowners.

  • hahaha this is funny, and the whole thing about why didnt he tape the white red and just leave the black black was exactly what i was thinking right befroe you said it

  • I saw this same thing used with a sub panel. The homeowner used the bare ground as a hot with no ground at all. The whole panel casing read 120V to a grounded source in the garage. If you haven't studied electrical, for the love of God, stay the hell away from it!

  • What a disgrace to the electrical worker community, the laws in australia do say that a single colour conductor can be marked with tape to indicate what the cable is used for, however a ground MUST NEVER be used as a load carrying conductor, only as an earthing wire,,, im sick of seeing an apprentice i work with use twin and earth to do 2way switching, ill tell em to pull a new bloody cable,,, thanks for showing, its a good thing to critique ones dodgy work

  • thanx for showing

im train to be a maintenance guy

and im 20 years of age i do a lot of electrical stuff like this and i just wanted the thank you for showing me

  • Wow, that sent shivers up my spine just watching that. WOW.. that's all I can say.

  • I do home repair and have seen where a contractor used cardboard and duct tape to patch a wall and and mudded it all up and called it a day and bare wire to make spacers for a receptacle by a licensed electrician

  • Thanks. Wiring the incorrect way can get a person hurt, or cause the loss of a home.

I was looking for some wiring tips on changing out a light fixture. when I came across your info. I have red, white & black wires that I am going to work with, maybe!

I need to take a closer look. Thank You

  • Thanks for your comment and expanded explanation.I have quite a few more that I am rewriting the scripts on so I can better explain the hows and whys.

  • Good job. Keep up the good work.

One thing people should know is that in these types of situations, the ground is now parallel with the neutral back to the panelboard. Hence, it is now a current-carrying conductor. Although EGCs will carry a limited amount of current due to induction, they are installed to provide a low-impedance path for personal safety and fault-current protection—not to provide a path for load-current.
