The definition of a pyramid scheme is: your MAIN source of income is by recruiting other people whose MAIN source of income will then in turn also be by recruiting others.

Now the difference is a regular capitalist company like say Mercedes will be profitable for everyone involved (even the factory workers) as long as the end users buy their products (theoretically indefinitely). Whereas a pyramid scheme could only be profitable for EVERYONE if there was an indefinite number of people joining.
