ray mears......is my next door neighbour........he gets a builder in to do everything......lying bastard......and speaking of fires......hes got fucking central heating......his bills must be thru the roof
Small children.. What are they doing in the wild anyways.. I would leave my shelter there if I built in a survival situation.. It could save someone else's life too..
@576ito1080p There is no such thing as "no trace". Being proactive to increase the health and biodiversity of the area requires more skill and awareness. It's also more responsible than treating the landscape like a museum and is more alligned with the long term survival of the flora and fauna folks are concerned with. Most native cultures viewed stewardship of the landscape as an extension of garanteeing the health of the future generations.
@askstephenmaples survival situations are different buddy pretty much anything goes if it means preserving life. the fire laws are only for England. in Scotland its not a problem and it is aimed at those folk that go wild camping and make a real mess ie chopping into live tree's leaving rubbish etc etc. @edd542 cheers i ended up using this type of shelter with my son and it is very warm and comfortable so i can recomend it. takes a while to make but worth it !
Absolutely ridiculous!!! ---- "I need permission to light a fire?" WTF IS WRONG WITH EUROPE - If you are out in the woods and in a survival situation, It will be a cold day in hell before some bureaucratic moron tells me I need his damn permission to light a fire necessary for me to save my life...
We are very restericted as to what we do in the UK and as a rule the majority of the population do not appreciate bushmen and think they are insane or weird. Especialy the government so do not put us down because bushmen in the UK have to put up with enough shit thanks!
I would be concerned of burning to death and a narrow escape slit (past the fire) dead leaves and embers could end up being cooked alive. I want to take my son out for his first bushcraft weekend away not sure about this shelter......that said Ray Mears is renouned the world over as a pro if its good for him ? second option is to go all Bear Grylls and make a platform in the trees psml
my question to this whole matter is, what if it were to rain. people I know from the UK say that it is cold and rains alot and if you built a shelter without a roof rain gets in but if you put a roof on this shelter you have to go without a fire and then you freeze to death. Any comments? If any of you have an idea or proven theory on how to make a natural water proof shelter that you can build a fire in please share. I dont want ideas of what I can buy. I am a minimalist and dont carry much.
@Caveman0713 hey i dont know if youve found wildernessoutfittersarchery but dave canterbury has a great video on making a "spider shelter". very nice. similar to this but closed in and with a fire.
@jebus419 thanks for the suggestion, but I've already seen it. I was looking more for something that more than one person could stay in. thats why I was interested in this particular design, it could house 2,3, maybe up to 5 people. Dave's spider shelter is narrow and appears to be a single sleeper only. If you come across a shelter that can do both, for multiple people, keep me posted, thanks
Having a blanket indicates some level of preparedness so I can only assume that having a tarp also would not have been out of the question. A tarp shelter would have certainly made LNT a lot easier.
Not bad. You gotta see the long term shelter me and my 2 friends made in 5 hours! It's amazing! I will post it next weekend because we can't go to it this week with baseball and stuff. If it's not on my account by nex sunday check washingtonwizkidz channel. It will mostlikley be there
the sticks you found for your fire are a bit too damp, lots of excess smoke there, ya dont want to scorch the wood if if you wish to use that wood again :P
hell in the hell does he find so many pitch fork sticks to build this shelter? i tryed looking for the same wood all over the place so that i could build a shelter just like this one. but i couldnt find many sticks like the pitch fork ones.
@TheScorpion615 did you look for Trees that are Dead and still standing ? Dead trees and limbs don't aways fall to the ground , But I admit it is tough looking for that many where I am , being that dead wood is fire wood
im sure that i did. but i was looking for most of my sticks on the ground. but i know that i check a lot of trees on my way. but at most i found maybe 2 branches that were similar to the ones in the video.but ill also admit that im a newbie at this. so my surroundings might not be on point yet. because im still trying to find a good spot to do this at. most of the wood is dead where im at as well. will that chance once summer comes around?
I believe their more durible than those that have been on the ground . most of the fallen wood ends up fire wood here . and actually it wouldn't matter what I cut because the city is going to cut everything down anyway all along the river for a jogging trail abt. 12.2 mi. "sucks" I hope I can manage .
i been building and using similar shelters for a long time and, yes, in the winter. this is a good one. by the looks of some of the comments theres a lot of domesticated people here.
i have actually helped make one of those shelters, we made it about 6ft high , it took a lot of leaves but stood for well over one year and we went back to i on more than one occasion ,
I nearly said - "It's certainly getting that way", but it is more accurate to say - "Yes, it IS that way". Britain has become an incredibly regulated nation since a Labour government in 1997. But to be honest increasing numbers of people are starting to ignore lots of it now out of a combination of anger and also knowing that in reality the government cannot enforce all the absurd laws that it has put in place since 1997. Slowly slowly we're taking back what is ours.
That's good to hear. After all, that little island (sorry I'm from Alaska, so your island is little to me) is the source of sooo many of the world's great cultures. I'd hate for that to be lost to government regulation.
I agree. So much land is privately owned in the UK because we are such a small country. Sadly it's not like 'Deliverance' or 'Southern Comfort' where it's a case of 'Where is the law?!'. Good tip - if you take a leak in a UK town it's an £80 fine on the spot from the police (don't know how many USD that is!)
@59Gretsch We are very restericted as to what we do in the UK and as a rule the majority of the population do not appreciate bushmen and think they are insane or weird. Especialy the government so do not put us down because bushmen in the UK have to put up with enough shit thanks!
@59Gretsch If they could find another way to cut cucumbers they would ban knifes too. But if your a rich toff you can wally round all day with shotguns in your Landrover shooting poor people.

if youd have a continuous fire you wouldnt need a cover if it was going good enough, and if it started to rain it hardy every comes straight down so little rain would get in and the bit that did would be vaporized.
without all these other people's help you won't be able to build a fancy shelter like that, but you're more likely to survive with some people with you to help you out
Theres someone on this page who has been posting alot of comments about watching Ray Mears and how much they like watching him i've noticed, i'm guessing he fancies Ray.
This isn't spam because i'm a fan of Ray Mears and have no bad word against him, just thought it might be interesting to know.
I know from exp. that this is hell for your nose...the odor of the dead leaves & branches is killing ya in just a few hours. Let alone the smell of yourself collecting the dirt... but still, I love to watch Ray Mears performing his survival skills...:-)
the roof is open to let the smoke out. You dont need an enclosed roof in a small shelter like this one, since you have the fire going. The walls slope inward and protect you from the rain, so there is no need.
sitting bull dry dead leaves tend not to b that heavy and if your wise enough to take tinder and kindling into the dry sleeping area then lighting a fire shouldnt be to much of a problem this is a great design which ive used and i thnk it kicks @ss
Err, I get it, that happened to me once, rednecks, tons of them, all with gasoline, burnt down my forest I would wander in. Crazy pricks. It grew back twice as thick and beautiful though.
Yes, in survival mode you will approach the castle door and ask the lord if u can light his land aflame...that is silliness isn't it?
I just found it amusing that this fellow is trying to show u how to survive and leave no trace of man yet mentioned that u must obtain permission to light a fire. I imagine if u r sleeping in a homemade hut permission is the least of your worries.
If you are just out for the weekend having a laugh then you should seek permission from the landowner before lighting fires. If you really are in a survival situation then obviously this doesn't apply
Cool looking and all, but seriously, you would need to build the walls at a gradual angle or you won't have enough room to sleep out of the rain. This would require much longer logs/sticks which are harder to find, and are less often strong enough to withstand much weight. The hole would let the rain in on the fire, but if you build it without one, the walls would need to be steep in order to keep the shelter from burning, and to prevent Carbon Dioxide poisoning. I'll stick with a tarp pup tent.
some great inforamtion here thanks

Hey great video!!! I really liked the shelter idea. I may try to build one myself. Seems like a great winter shelter....
johnboyrebel27 2 years ago
.... i dont even know where to start...
1) why would u build such a complex shelter..
2) if it rains...doesnt it 1 put out the fire 2 get the ground inside ur shelter wet
3)one word.... hail
4) better shelters A Frame Lean-two ... both easier and faster to build... and have better protection....
RumXnXCoke23 2 years ago
1. its a semi-permanent shelter
2. aye, the rain can get the ground wet, but the heat of the fireplace dries it soon (i tried it)
and NO if you have a propper fire it will not turn out.
and 3. Inside an a-frame you can only light a small fire that does not realy keep you warm.

I know from exp. that this is hell for your nose...the odor of the dead leaves & branches is killing ya in just a few hours. Let alone the smell of yourself collecting the dirt... but still, I love to watch Ray Mears performing his survival skills...:-)

he never made the roof...??
short4421 3 years ago
the roof is open to let the smoke out.

What is wrong with Great Britain?
sittingbull09 4 years ago
nothing - it's a comparatively small country and the owner of the land you're on might not want you to burn it all to the ground.

I don't understand the intended humor in your post, could you explain it to me is a way a yank would understand?

I just found it amusing that this fellow is trying to show u how to survive and leave no trace of man yet mentioned that u must obtain permission to light a fire. I imagine if u r sleeping in a homemade hut permission is the least of your worries.
sophia071 3 years ago
I would be more concerned with someone making a hut on my land than them making a small fire.

If you are just out for the weekend having a laugh then you should seek permission from the landowner before lighting fires. If you really are in a survival situation then obviously this doesn't apply

All the wildlife in Great Britain is protected by law, set a forest on fire n your cooking animals.

Even in canada one of the largest and unclaimed forest, sometimes you still need a permet from the fire dept.

As I imagine would be the case in any forest. You don't need "permission" to be careful.

England's been a fascist country since the 60's, if you ask me.

You are right I am sure, what with the lizard queen and all.....It just struck me as amusing. I prob. just have a different sense of humor.

I'll stick with a tarp pup tent.

what would happen if it rained, would it come through the top?
gunnerlou 4 years ago
i mean, would it put the fire out
gunnerlou 4 years ago
probably, but its not safe to have a fire in a closed shelter anyway because it would choke you out.
