of course it needs a water pump because the tank is higher than the radiatiors. hot water goes up by nature, not down. so to get it down you need a water pump.
@wexxx0 If the radiator is the coldest spot in the system it can be a passive system. A system with a pump is an active system. Heat travels from Hot to Cold! It depends upon the design of the system whether it has a pump or not. Its called convection to naturally circulate through the system.

that wire might be a switch to close the system if the area your heating becomes to hot...just a guess :-)
