Well, it's obvious the performance of this song was not done on a Broadway stage. It was in some studio somewhere. It's very unlikely there was any rehearsal in this space, so, it's going to be 'stilted' because of the unfamiliarity of the surroundings. Anyway, she the best Annie that has ever performed this role . . . and I oughtta know . . . she's my cousin.
Reba looks and sounds lovely here--the perfect Annie, but the performance is stiff and a little drawn in. I bet that with a little more stage work she'd be a fantastic broadway actress/singer.
Perfect casting! It would be enough that Reba is a very talented singer and thoroughly engaging performer. But her authentic Oklahoma twang (yeah, I know the real Annie Oakley was actually from Ohio) and genuine down home attitude take this performance to a whole 'nother level of believability. I can see why the critics raved about her in this show. Brava!
Amazing performance . Reba couldn't be nominated for the TONY because she didn't originate the part in the revival but she won the Drama Desk award for this performance on Broadway and won enormous critical reviews. I was lucky enough to see her in this performance on Broadway and she was extraordinary. Also got to meet her backstage afterwards and she was extremely nice and gracious. Thanks for posting this video.
@Huntress59 It was like an entirely new musical when she took over from Bernadette Peters!! The Tony Awards should have awarded her a special Tony as they did with Pearl Bailey back in the 1960's when she took over for Hello Dolly. It would have been an award happily approved by the theater community!! The role fitted Reba as if originally created for her.
@MrDarrellmoo . Wow I didn't know that they gave Pearl Bailey a special Tony. I got to see her do Hello Dolly when she did the show in Chicago. Another amazing performance. I agree the theatre community would have approved of a special Tony for Reba
@Huntress59 It was back in 1968 during the original run of the show. After four years the box-office was falling off so David Merrick deserved to revamp the show with an all-black cast with Bailey cast as Dolly. It was a smash and kept the show running. But because she didn't originate the role naturally she wasn't able to be nominated that year but the Tonys thought her performance was worthy enough for recognition so they awarded her a Special Tony Award. They sould have done that with Reba.
@caddyismygirl In this role, FOR SURE! She's so down home and southern. Bernadette was not, I hated her accent, and for crying out loud she's Italian!
I remember them discussing filming "Annie Get Your Gun" with Reba for either PBS, or Disney was going to make it one of their TV movie musicals. They also looked into the possibility of making a feature film about it, but when she was in the show, the movie musical wasn't "hot".
I read that it was CBS but the funding fell through. I have seen hundreds of Broadway shows and one of my three biggest regrets was not going back to see Annie Get Your Gun with Reba. I saw her on CBS This Morning and cried after several clips from several numbers.
O my...this is pretty bad! She absolutely ruins this song and her acting is as bad as it gets. What is she trying to do...be a pop diva or a hillbilly hick...or a misplaced big band singer...perhaps Reba should stick to square dances at some little Texas pub! She drags the song. Looks like I'll be sticking with Ethel Merman's Lincoln Center album.
This was the Broadway revival designed for Bernadette Peters, who won the Tony. Reba later replaced her in the role and got rave reviews, her Broadway debut.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Barbara Cook told her audiences that Reba's Annie was one of the greatest perfornances of Merman's role she had ever heard. I don't fully agree since to me country music is best suited to Reba's voice. Still, it's all a matter of personal appeal and your taste.
i completly agree reba is the best she has accomplished so many things, so any one who has anything bad to say about her can shut up. REBA IS THE QUEEN OF COUNTRY MUSIC!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Eh. Reba doesn't sound as good as Merman or Mary Martin. She also doesn't have real stage presence--she looks like she's trying to remember her blocking. Plus she keeps putting that country-music "sob" in her voice, and it doesn't sound right. And that "hoedown!" arrangement is lame, a sop to the Opryland crowd.
Not that Reba isn't a fantastic singer in her genre. JMO.
and how the fuck would you know anybetter? do you know what she has accomplished? she is the queen of country music. she has more gold records than anyone, and she is the most sucsessful in the entertainment industry, she has been on broadway, she has her own tv show, clothing line.....do i have to keep going?
@countrygirl5555@countrygirl5555 I just popped onto this clip to show my granddaughter what 'wholesome' music used to be like, and I immediately hit your foul language and hectoring tone. Whatever your strength of feeling, why let yourself down, girl, by using the language of the gutter?
@countrygirl5555 JCMarra said that she is a fantastic singer in her genre. This is not her genre . . . and I have to agree, this is not Reba at her best, nor is it Broadway at its. JCMarra called it right this time, and your rage response does not do you credit.
@countrygirl5555 Amen! The performance is totally appropriate to the character. We are talking about Annie Oakley of the Wild West Show! Reba delivers one of the great performances in the history of musical theatre here. Just ask the NY critics!! Nuff said...
@JCMarra To be fair, that "country music sob" in her voice is her voice. She's a country girl - she speaks with it and she sings with it. And what better Broadway character to share it with than Annie Oakley? Merman, Mary Martin, and Bernadette Peters all (successfully) affected a twang for the role.
And the "hoedown" arrangement was written into the show for the 1999 revival - which is the same arrangement and run of the show that Reba walked into. That hardly qualifies as a nod to Opryland.
I loved Reba on Braodway. I was lucky enough to have seen it 2 times with great seats. She was amazing. Maybe she will do Broadway again? I will be first in line for tickets....
