I can't understand this guy and his reasoning.. So you say that it's absurd that a war marshal who basically allied Finland with Germany is still a highly respected figure in Finland, right? I would say that it's absurd that any Allied country ever helped the USSR during the war. To this date there's no question that for Finland the best choice was to get German assistance in order to prevent Finland becoming a Soviet Republic and try to destroy communism for once and for all..
I have to agree with the others that the claims about the "atrocities" Finland committed during WW2 are a bit thin. And besides what were we supposed to do? Agree to the terms Stalin gave us? Look what happened to those who did. Germany was the only one to help us fight the Soviets and for that I thank them. Hitler may not have been the good guy but hey do you think the Soviets were. The allies themselves were allies with the devil, Stalin, and do you know all the horrible things he did?
It is hard to understand why someone can be so wrong about the Finland as Mr Arnstad is. This is something like claiming 1+2 to be 4 or something similar primitively wrong statement.
I cannot see here any other reasons for statements he is doing related to Finland in WW2 other than complete misunderstaning of Finland history and WW2 or then he is purposly looking for the media space for his book.
Also a very interesting subject is swedish participation in the Finnish civil war in 1918 and the atrocities committed then. The swedish minority in finland and swedes from sweden constituted a huge majority of officers in the white army and ordered atrocities.
"Great Finland" fanatics were relatively small group of Finns. Mannerheim's status is high in Finland because of 3 wars he fought: Civil War, Winter War and Continuation War. After
Civil War a large number of Finns considered him as a Liberator. And after Winter War - Continuation War Finns felt he was our Savior (alongside of brave finnish soldiers). That's why he has a statue in Helsinki and it will stay there.
Why would Finnish troops have killed civilians in Eastern Karelia?! Karelian people are very close to Finnish people, they understand and speak Finnish language along with their own dialect. Mannerheim didn't like Hitler and Nazis and didn't want "Great Finland". After reaching a kind of buffer zone against Russian attack he KNEW would come, he halted the advance of Finnish troops. Even before this he had halted Finnish advance towards Leningrad (St. Petersburg).
Then atrocities Finland made during WWII? War is war and people die and we know that lot of Russian prisoners died in prison camps in Finland. But lets not forget that almost all of dead died for malnutrition or diseases during wartime when Finnish people had very little food even for themselves. I don't know where this "journalist" came up with info on concentration camps (POW camps is true) and killing of children and elderly people, I have read a lot about this war and never heard about this.
It's really interesting how Sweden as a nation tries to forgot its own part of aiding Axis powers. Sweden made a deal(s) with Germany allowing troops to transit through Sweden and making huge profits by selling metal industry products (ex. ball bearings) to Germany. These deals together with the fact that Sweden didn't have threat from USSR (because Finland acted as a buffer zone between them) made Sweden the rich country it is today.
What do you know about war? Probably nothing for several reasons.
And the film footage of Mannerheim and Hitler is NOT of Hitler visiting Mannerheim, but Mannerheim visiting Hitler in Germany. Also if you care to read about Mannerheim you will find out quite quickly that Mannerheim did not like Hitler or his politics.
Interesting how you left out the Swedish effort to support the Axis in the second world war by sending volunteers to assist Finland and Germany in the war against USSR.
There are several occasions where Swedish volunteers brutally executed Russian civilians.
Is Sweden denying its own history of involvement in this European-wide conflict? Do not escape your own responsibilities by simply accusing others for their history. First look into your own.
